Great video! I'm hoping you can help me, I've been breaking my head for months trying to figure out if I can get a good HDR image on my TV. It's a Samsung RU7100 UHD TV. Hdmi 2.0 Any tips on how to better improve my HDR experience on ps5? I currently have the rate set to automatic but the image seems dim and smudged with colour if that makes sense. Also does the above video apply for whether you're playing in HDR, sdr or both?
Do you have UHD color turned on for that port? Sometimes Samsung hides it in the menus. Going off my photographic memory mine was hidden in “external device settings” and under UHD color you had to select each port you wanted to have HDR. You need to go into settings first of course and then “general” and then external device settings. Don’t quote me on that though as I’m going by memory. Set your strings to -1 for 4k transfer rate. Since you are on Hdmi 2.0 this is a must for you. Ensure that you have your RGB settings set to limited as the black level on your tv needs to match. Never use Auto as I find the results it gives are mixed at best to downright bad at worst. Next once you are sure all of that is set properly go into your hdr settings on your Ps5 and adjust the white background until the image just disappears entirely, then adjust the black level to as low as it goes. Then adjust the secondary white level the same way as the first. Remember ONLY until the image just disappears or you will confuse your set. This should in theory improve your hdr by a significant margin if everything is set right. Also do the following before starting “any” game. Turn off “auto HDR” and turn on “on when supported “ This is doubly important as you are using a Samsung. Unfortunately older Samsungs would often run HDR games with tone mapping on plus the came consoles settings over top of that causing them to be in a double hdr bubble of sorts . So now you are effectively tone mapping twice. Newer Samsungs don’t do this usually but some still do. If your games do not properly support hdr but your console is creating a pseudo hdr they will look like a blobby washed out color mess because “auto” setting will add too much contrast in order to simulate the HDR effect. Make sure you make the above adjustment otherwise your image results will be all over the place and drive you up a wall. If none of that works then the tv you have may not support HDR fully and be limited to what it can do. This is the extent of my knowledge and I can only hope that it helps :)
What if u have a hdmi 2.1 tv but the ps5 is connected to 2.0? I have the 2021 sony bravia sony x90J 65in and i have my soundbar connected to hdmi 2.1 and my ps5 to 2.0 because i only have 1 (2.1 port)
I have a Samsung LC24F392FHNXZA 24-inch Curved LED Gaming Monitor (Super Slim Design), 60Hz Refresh Rate w/AMD FreeSync Game Mode and it flickers when I load warzone do you know the problem?
I set it to -1 and if i turn ps5 off it automatically switches back to automatic. Wonder why it does that. I have lg c2 TV but use hdmi 2,0 cable coz 2,1 that came with ps5 was to short.
Even if you have an hdmi 2.1 tv, in some cases/games setting this to -1 improves the feel of 30 fps on ps5. Without it ps5 30 fps games dont feel as smooth as 30 fps on ps4. It took so long for me to find out why the same game on ps4 at 30 fps felt better than the same game at 30 fps on ps5… (same tv obviously). Then by setting this to -1, alas it performed/felt exactly as the pa4 games. This is handy for some cross gen games where hdmi 2.1 us not supported anyway and were there are no 60fps modes for ps5.
I have a run of the mill 43” 4K HDR Samsung TV from Walmart. I’ve gamed on it for two years with my series x and have not had any problems, I recently picked up a PS5 and noticed game’s looking overly bright and lacking in contrast in darker areas. Also my eyes would be sore after only an hour or two . I played and played with HDR settings and my tv settings and never could get it to look just right or resemble my Xbox’s picture. Finally I discovered this setting and set it to -2 and bam it looks great now and just about how I’m used to seeing HDR. So my question is if -2 is HDMI 1.4 how am I able to display 4K with HDR? I know my tv is displaying 4K HDR 60 as it’ll tell me when i switch inputs. I’m just a little confused and would love a response regarding this
Okay so it can’t be possible to run HDR at hdmi 1.4 so that’s very very weird. Samsung truly is the most random brand with its own share of issues. There are two things that could be straining your eyes. 1. Is game mode not engaged? 2. What is your color temperature set too?, blue light is hard on the eyes and if you have Dynamic or cool engaged that would be a huge strain on top of the input lag if game mode isn’t engaged. If your tv has game motion plus you may also want to shut that off as that can introduce additional lag despair it looking smoother. Now are you sure that HDR is engaged? Samsung doesn’t actually tell you unless you check the icon in the menu and it says Game mode hdr for example. Now let’s begin trouble shooting. First turn off Auto HDR as that will create a pseudo HdR for games that do not support it. It will look washed out and over contrasted because Samsung is doing hdr tone mapping and then your console is doing additional tone mapping over top of that. Results vary from a blurry mess to over contrasted image. Change hdr too “on when supported”. This way your SDR games don’t play in a fake HDR. Make sure your RGB range is set to limited, auto will set the range to full automatically and crush your blacks and over brighten colors. Make sure HdR is turned on for the port you are using. On your tv Go to general and then external devices and UHD color and turn it on manually for the port in question if it’s not on already. Set Transfer rate to -1. -2 gives you less information and less capabilities. You may be able to run 4k at 60fps but not with HDR proper. Go into your HDR settings on your PlayStation and adjust the white until the image just disappears and stop. Turn black all the at down as low as it goes. Then for the secondary white screen adjust the same way as the first. Now some more adjustments on your tv. Go into your settings under picture settings and turn down your backlight until it is at a comfortable level. Turn sharpness down to 0. Adjust contrast until it looks good but more contrast means punchier colors at the cost of accuracy. Turn Local Dimming to high if you have it but if you don’t like the way it looks set at low Turn off any kind of motion smoothing if it is on. Turn color temperature to either Warm 1 or Warm 2 whichever you are more comfortable with. This will make things seem orange or yellow ish to your eyes at first but your eyes will not have to strain nearly as much looking at the image in question if you change this setting. Now back out and go back to your external device settings and under game settings turn off game motion plus and also Set free sync to “pro” or the highest level. Anything lower and on some TVs it is not recognized. If this doesn’t work then turn it to “low”. If you don’t have Freesync or VRR on your tv then ignore this step. Under your black level ensure it is on black level “low.” To match the limited range and properly match blacks. My suspicion is that your tv is running cool colors and also maybe not running in game mode with the backlight at close to fill blast. This is very hard on your eyes and strains them especially when playing at night. That said I still thought It’s best to check everything I can possibly think of. Samsungs are a weird brand for different issues but everything is solvable if the correct settings are engaged. This is the extent of my knowledge though so if none of this works I’d say grab a new set.
@@nosystemisperfect9954 Thank you sir for the reply and yes I have Game mode on, black level on low and no image smoothing or anything. It’s just strange that yes HDR is enabled on my TV with -2 selected, that’s where my confusion comes from. I have my colors on standard which is probably more in the blue/cool light filter. I’ll warm 1 and see if I can adjust to it lol
I have a 4k monitor and I have to use -2 because with automatic I got a blank screen same with -1 haven't had any issues since changing it maybe because my monitor is getting to much bandwidth
It may be that your monitor is HDMI 2.0 but your display port is 2.1 🤔. So over hdmi it can output 4k 60hz because it's limited by hdmi 2.0 functionality. So your monitor can output 4k at 120hz or higher over display port but not hdmi 🤔 Alternatively double check that all hdmi ports support 2.1 cause they might not be. There might be only one with such compatibility. That's a common samsung trick to save on manufacturing costs.
I noticed something else and very intriguing, the picture quality looks better with -1 than automatic and I am using an cx oled which is 2.1 hdmi. The part that’s bothersome is that ps5 does only 32gb bandwidth which is not enough for 10bit which the tv is so I can see why there’s a mismatch in signal. I tried automatic which is full bandwidth that the ps5 can use but games looks too soft in my opinion but when I changed to -1 then it looks sharp so I don’t know what’s happening there but I am guessing it has something to do with the way Sony implemented the hdmi bandwidth which it says 12 bit but the games at the moment only needs 10bit so there’s always a mismatch and I don’t really understand why there’s not a 10bit rgb only option like the Xbox series x has.
Ur correct. But! If u change the OLED to PC mode, automatic works perfectly 4 some reason. But yes, -1 is what it should be on. Only use Automatic on 120fps games to get back up to 4k/120 with HDR
@@TheeThunderGod so pc mode is better with automatic and by works you mean sharp and crisp? -1 is the correct image quality can you say? But automatic which use full bandwidth is only for 4K/120hz content which is very scarce at the moment and with the current ps5 output settings there’s no much use for full bandwidth I may right? So by using -1 I won’t losing any data for 4K/60hz?
@@badassfriend9076 try it. You'll see. Im still confused ny it as well. When im not in pc mode, automatic crushes blacks and gives me ghosting on my OLED, especially in 30fps games, so i use -1 for yuv422. But, when u edit ur hdmi port to pc, automatic works. Try it out. Lmk what u think.
Hello. I have a 4k lg monitor running at 60 hz and I am connecting it to the ps5 via hdmi2.0 port with the hdmi cab,e provided with the console. What option should I choose in the 4k video transfer rate category. I think that -2 will be the way to go. What do you think?
@@nosystemisperfect9954 no my monitor does not have 1000 nits of brightness but its hdr 400 which is not worth trying so I do not use the hdr feature. It is also an 8bit panel trying to simulate 10 bit but in reality it is 8bit.
I have an LG B9 which has HDMI 2.1 but I still have issues with it set to automatic. Playing any game and it even affects the main menu. Only fix is setting it to -1
Hmm strange. I only have issues with some games. -1 knocks the bandwidth down to 60 and hdr. I'll see if I have the same issue when I get home later tonight 🤔
So I set the resolution to automatic as well and that seemed to fix it. I guess having it locked in at 4K seems to be the issue even though it's supposed to support it anyway, dynamic I guess?
Hey I have an LG43UJ6200 4K LED tv and I'm getting color banding lines on my PS5. Whether I play Destiny 2 or AC Valhalla it usually shows us in the night skies. I don't play in HDR, I'm using the default HDMI cable, I've tried changing all the settings, and also -1 and -2 don't seem to help. Is there anything I can do or is there a newer TV that doesn't have those lines? I'm not sure if it's the PS5 or my TV
You must be using a monitor or tv which does not have or support 4k. If my memory serves correctly 2k is 1440p and therefore 4k transfer rate won’t be accessible. It’s either that or another setting needs to be implemented somewhere on your tv or monitor to allow 4k content. However I have heard some early Samsung tvs range from “you have to dig through the menus” to straight up they just don’t work when they should. Usually this happens with TVs around 2017 and below although it also can happen with more “budget friendly” Samsungs as well. I had to set allow 4k for example on my tenants X Box Series S before any of the green check marks appeared in the system check.
Your video is helpful in terms of helping one understand what these settings do. However, I am confused because I have a Vizio M50Q7-H1 and it is advertised as an HDMI 2.1 capable TV. But, it lacks the 120hz refresh rate. And the HDMI settings doesn’t allow HDR unless it is set to 2.1. So Vizio kind of put out this confusing TV that is advertised to do something it doesn’t actually do. So I’m still unsure as to which transfer rate I should use
Sorry for the late response. HDMI 2.1 is a weird and mixed bag of standards. 2.1 doesn't necessarily mean 120hz You can have 120hz panel but that doesn't mean it refreshes at that rate for games. I know it's weird. Let me look into it for you 🙂
Vizio has lied. If they said their Panel was 2.1 speced then they have glossed over quite abit. Your panels native refresh rate is 60hz or 60fps. Your panel does have VRR which can lock in frames better on supported consoles and PC's but it cannot reach 120hz on any resolution because it is actually a HDMI 2.0 specked TV. It may have some features of 2.1 but it is not true 2.1. You need minimum bandwidth of 40gbs to get 120hz with vrr and hdr and ideally 48gbs for all of the above and then some. Your tv is capped at 18gbs which means the maximum your tv can handle is the following. 4k HDR 60hz 4k HDR 60hz with VRR Your Hdmi transfer speed therefore should be - 1 as your tv does not have the capability to do anything past that unfortunately. Consult the link below if you want to know settings and the like for your tv. Check out under input lag to confirm the things I said. www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/vizio/m7-series-quantum-2020
I'm having a flicker issue with my ps5, noticeable when im in settings scolling. I found that the culprit is 'game mode' on my TV, but perhaps not the TV itself, rather a handshake issue from ps5 to the TV. I know this to be the case because I changed my TV mode to the others and had no flicker issue. Now if I activate hdr/vrr on my tv it automatically locks me into game mode, and I cannot change the mode unless I disable vrr/hdr from the signal format of tv settings. I hope Sony fixes this issue -- between ps5 and game mode setting on TV. Perhaps it could be a game mode hdr issue with the ps5 even. I did disable hdr on the console while my TV was in game mode however the issue remained. I tried really everything other than trying another port in the tv -- I didn't because my arc I have my surround sound set to. Do you know of a fix? My tv is x85j
Same, and I also have the same tv. it helped to turn off hdcp and the other options in the HDMI menu. Why? No idea. I also turned the transfer rate to -1, even though our tvs should be able to support automatic. I had one flicker instance in Elden Ring 30 min in after that, but then I played two hours of No Man's Sky and nothing happened. Sooo..... carefully optimistic?
does anyone know why that 4k video transfer would be greyed out? mine is and i have no idea how to make it available for me to change cause im getting the flickering little square dots everywhere and from what im reading it seems to be an issue with this freakin 4k transfer. but i cant change it out of automatic T_T my ps5 runs through my capture card, but even when i hook it directly into my monitor it's still greyed out and i cant figure out why ... do i need to maybe go into safe mode and do something in there? super frustrating lol ahhhh help
It might be because your tv only supports the one bandwidth. What year was your tv made? Or it might be due to the limitation of your capture card perhaps? Tech is annoying and weird sometimes lol
Hi, I have my ps5 connected to an hdmi 2.0 asus 4k hdr monitor, and both demon's souls and astro's playroom are full of banding on both automatic and - 1, it disappears at -2, and I get it only when playing in hdr mode, sdr content looks good
Yes leave it on Automatic. I do the same with the same setup. I changed it to -1 just to see the difference and it locked me out to change it back to Automatic. So leave it on automatic because -1 will read as if you have HDMI 2.0 like he mentioned and it makes a huge difference
Great video and very valuable information! I have a Samsung 2.0 hdmi but when I set to automatic the scream becomes black sometimes, but when I set to -2 it fixes the problem. Do you know what might be happening?
Do you have a HDMI 2.1 TV and are you sure it’s true 2.1? If your tv is not HDMI 2.1 then you should set it -1 If you don’t need 120hz then just set 120hz to off in the PS5 menus. If you have a fully capable 2.1 hdmi tv then you should leave the option on Automatic. The only time you should set -1 or -2 is if your tv can’t handle extra processing hdmi 2.1 affords you.
@@nosystemisperfect9954 yeap it is true 2.1 it says 4K 120fps next to the hdmi port but my console is conected right now in a non-2.1 port cuz I don’t play games at 120fps. Thanks bro that was really helpful!! Btw do you recommend ALLM enable?
Hey there!, -2 is too low for the B8. You need to set it to -1 The reason is because -2 is when you don’t have a hdr enabled tv and you have a HDMI lower then 2.0 Watch your transfer rate carefully. Setting it too low will mess with things too badly. If you are unsure then simply set it to Automatic. Tbh I gave up with the banding thing. It’s a inherit flaw of Oleds that persists to this day. Changing the transfer rate only somewhat fixes the issue.

Informative video. Wouldn't automatic set the signal to whatever the content supports "automatically" (PS4 games to either -1 or -2? An important note: under the frames info it says "120hz (YUV 4:2:2)". This needs to be taken into consideration because the PS5's HDMI 2.1 chip is capped at 32 Gbps (not full 48 Gbps bandwidth) and it has been proven (Xbox X caps at 40). Therefore, the max signal is 4K@120hz HDR10 4:2:2 chroma subsampling (4K@120hz HDR NOT possible with full RGB PC mode nor 4:4:4) 4K@60hz HDR full RGB (YUV 4:4:4), Yes, the console can handle this. HDMI 2.0 has 18 Gbps bandwidth: Max video signal is 4K@60hz HDR 4:2:2 - 4K@120hz NOT supported.
Some TVs and monitors have hdmi 2.0 or etc hidden deep in the Menus. TCL is one such tv where it’s not so easily found if you don’t know where to look. If your monitor is not 4k then the transfer rate won’t work. For example if it’s 2k (1440p) then you need to turn on that setting in the video menu. If it is 4k with hdr then there has to be a setting hidden somewhere in the menus. I wouldn’t go out and buy something new if what you have is working just fine. Things are so bloody expensive right now and I’m not just talking about the PS5 in that regard.

Note: at one point is say - 1 and not - 2.
Sorry for this silly error.
I have a sony bravia x800g and the "4k video transfer rate" option is completely missing
If anyone is having issues with flickering or snow on an hdmi 2.0 tv. Clear cache in safe mode. It fixes the issue.
Thanks that’s what my ps5 is doing
It didn’t work
I have a run of the mill 43” 4K HDR Samsung TV from Walmart.
Turn Local Dimming to high if you have it but if you don’t like the way it looks set at low
Turn off any kind of motion smoothing if it is on.
So your monitor can output 4k at 120hz or higher over display port but not hdmi 🤔
Alternatively double check that all hdmi ports support 2.1 cause they might not be.
That is fascinating!
Yes maybe it is in fact a bandwidth issue!
That would definately make a ton of sense!
I want to research this further now 😁
Read my comment up top
Ur correct.
Does it have HDR? 🙂
You could always try labelling your input to PC.
I Know that this resolves allot of the issues in allot of different tv's. 🤔
Why can’t I even access this 4K viedo transfer rate it says “cant change this setting during 2k viedo output”
2.1 doesn't necessarily mean 120hz
You can have 120hz panel but that doesn't mean it refreshes at that rate for games.
I know it's weird.
Let me look into it for you 🙂
@@nosystemisperfect9954 alright. No worries. I appreciate it, man
Vizio has lied.
4k HDR 60hz
4k HDR 60hz with VRR
Your Hdmi transfer speed therefore should be - 1 as your tv does not have the capability to do anything past that unfortunately.
Consult the link below if you want to know settings and the like for your tv.
Check out under input lag to confirm the things I said.

@@nosystemisperfect9954 thanks again. Guess I’ve been had by Vizio haha. False advertisement. Gotta love it
I'm having a flicker issue with my ps5, noticeable when im in settings scolling.
I am going to look into this issue because I love problem solving :)
I use X85K and have the flicker issue playing GOW Ragnarok. Setting transfer to -1 seemed to make it go away. Any update for you?
does anyone know why that 4k video transfer would be greyed out? mine is and i have no idea how to make it available for me to change cause im getting the flickering little square dots everywhere and from what im reading it seems to be an issue with this freakin 4k transfer. but i cant change it out of automatic T_T my ps5 runs through my capture card, but even when i hook it directly into my monitor it's still greyed out and i cant figure out why ... do i need to maybe go into safe mode and do something in there? super frustrating lol ahhhh help
It might be because your tv only supports the one bandwidth.
What year was your tv made?
Or it might be due to the limitation of your capture card perhaps?
Tech is annoying and weird sometimes lol
Hi, I have my ps5 connected to an hdmi 2.0 asus 4k hdr monitor, and both demon's souls and astro's playroom are full of banding on both automatic and - 1, it disappears at -2, and I get it only when playing in hdr mode, sdr content looks good
Cuz ur tv can only do 420 probably. The frequencies list tells u what ur tv can do.
What if you have an HDMI 2.0 TV that still does 1440p 120 with vrr and allm?
Do you go automatic or minus one?
That's impossible. HDMI 2.0 can't do 120hertz at 4k.
I use 4k hdr 120hz tv with 4 hdmi 2.1 ports... so I don't need to do nothing but just leave it on automatic?
Yes leave it on Automatic. I do the same with the same setup. I changed it to -1 just to see the difference and it locked me out to change it back to Automatic. So leave it on automatic because -1 will read as if you have HDMI 2.0 like he mentioned and it makes a huge difference
Great video and very valuable information! I have a Samsung 2.0 hdmi but when I set to automatic the scream becomes black sometimes, but when I set to -2 it fixes the problem. Do you know what might be happening?
Try setting the transfer rate to -1 :)
I have a Samsung Q60r, what transfer rate should I put it at to reduce screen flickering?? -1 or -2 I currently have it on -2??
You should probably change that to -1 because your tv I’m pretty sure can handle 60 hz hdr :)
I can’t even change it i says can’t change settings during 2k video output
Same
did u find a way to fix it?
Because u don’t have a 4K monitor
If I use the hdmi that comes with the ps5 and I like to play at 60hz and not 120hz should I put -1 or automatic?
Do you have a HDMI 2.1 TV and are you sure it’s true 2.1?
If your tv is not HDMI 2.1 then you should set it -1
If you don’t need 120hz then just set 120hz to off in the PS5 menus.
I put 4k transfer data in -2 and color banding dissapear but , HDR work well?i have oled B8
Hey there!,
-2 is too low for the B8.
You need to set it to -1
The reason is because -2 is when you don’t have a hdr enabled tv and you have a HDMI lower then 2.0
Watch your transfer rate carefully.
Setting it too low will mess with things too badly.
If you are unsure then simply set it to Automatic.
Tbh I gave up with the banding thing.
It’s a inherit flaw of Oleds that persists to this day.
Changing the transfer rate only somewhat fixes the issue.
@@nosystemisperfect9954 ok !!thanks , the best settings is 4k transfer -1 ,RGB límited , game mode and black low ,right ?color gamut?wide, expanded or auto ?
@@tomyvengeance7238 always use Auto because although the wide and expanded color gamut looks more “punchy” but it is not the way the creator intended it to look.
Of course if you prefer the way it looks then I won’t tell you you have to use Auto.
There is no real correct answer tbh and it’s all subjective.
Although “auto” follows the creators intent you might not like the way it looks
Try both and see what you like better :)
Yes black level low with game mode and rgb limited on the PlayStation. :)

If anyone is having the issue of the 4K Video Transfer Rate is grayed out here was my solution.

Therefore, the max signal is 4K@120hz HDR10 4:2:2 chroma subsampling (4K@120hz HDR NOT possible with full RGB PC mode nor 4:4:4)
4K@60hz HDR full RGB (YUV 4:4:4), Yes, the console can handle this.
HDMI 2.0 has 18 Gbps bandwidth: Max video signal is 4K@60hz HDR 4:2:2 - 4K@120hz NOT supported.
This is a a good point actually.
Hopefully they uncap the port but untill then this is the case.
Thank you for your info 🙂
Its blurred out for me. Do i need another fucking moniter after spending all my savings on this console?
