i was fortunate enough to be a driver for a 'anti-drug' (ha) concert at madison square garden in the 80's and told to go to studio instrument rentals and stay there until they're done and bring the guitars back to the garden--one by one they start showing up--wow, big room, had a basketball hoop, im shooting baskets with Butch--then I realize it's the Allman bros, Gregg, then Dickie and the others and they proceed to go over some songs--they play for about an hour--i'm the only one there watching the Allman bros rehearse, it was astounding---my man keep telling your stories, it's like listening to America!

That was an anti crack concert called crack is wack with many other Bands participating, and I was at that studio playing basketball with the boys and I believe that was at SIR Studios we were all playing basketball together and what an amazing time we had there.

yes, eventually i drove Santana, crosby and stills, buddy miles, and the best was me and paul butterfield to teterboro airport, we would have gone and shot pool but he had a plane to catch---during the grand finale im behind the stage with 6 metal steps leading to the stage and im trying to get the nerve to find a reason to just go up there, so i find a drumstick and a beet bottle and climb up off to the left and become percussive---it was incredible@@edwardstevenweissman9481

One other word about Dickey Betts. He did come to Gregg's funeral. I saw that myself. Later I read that him and Gregg had spoken with each other and that all was well with those two before Gregg passed on. I was glad Dickey did that, I knew he had reasons to be pissed for getting fired, but so happy him and Gregg were friends at the end.

He did have reason to be passed off too he practically carried the band for years look on records and cds and see wrote most of the material yeah could be difficult they could have sat him down and talked to him face to face and told him to straightened up not fired him by fax just saying not trying to start nothing,an ABB and GA and DB fan since the 70s. Peace and Love JayBird

My band opened for Dickey Betts and Great Southern in the mid - 80s for about a dozen shows. The first night I met Dickey he and I both had a black eye! It was funny! And I guess we sorta bonded over that. Anyway I had a 70s Gibson SG with a Harmonica bridge ( still have it ) and it was set up for slide and he used it a few times,in return,he let me set in several times,as far as his playing, some nights , he was merely great, other nights, his playing transcended words 0ne night at a half empty club somewhere in south Georgia he was standing at the front of the stage eyes closed, chin forward and playing " Blue Sky ",and myself and several others were in tears,Betts was capable of taking everyone who was really listening on musical journey somewhere this side of heaven. He deserves to be on the Guitar Mount Rushmore and he he probably would be, except he played in a band that didn't bear his name. Duane used to say " I'm the famous guitar player, but Dickey is the good one "The Brothers and Sisters album is the first one entirely without Duane and Dickey wrote and sang Ramblin Man, Southbound and Poneboy as well as the opus "Jessica "and was the only guitar player in the band 72 -77 and Gregg and Butch were in bad shape several of those shows. There is a tasty live album from that period called Wipe the Windows check the oil dollar gas that has Chuck Leavell piano and Lamar Williams bass that Jaimo said is one of his favorites ( one of mine too)Did that Chieftain also tell you " don't knock a man until you've walked a mile in his moccasins "I saw Betts get mad a couple times too,but it was warranted. He also paid my band our 3 grand out of his own account when a promoter stiffed us. Does that sound like an a$$hole to you? Me neither. Yes Johnny Neel was with DBGS then great pianist and B3 player too and singer and harmonica player too great songwriter check .He was in the ABB on the Seven Turns album and wrote a couple of the tunes sings lead on one song nice guy too. Long time listener. Just don't agree all the time. But hey if we were all the same they wouldn't need some of us,huh? First time commenter cause they are always too long but I just had to tell what I know about the great Forrest Richard Betts. Peace and Love. The JayBird

@markoverman2250 Dig in man there is a lot of great music there ww ctoil gas has a lot of Brothers and Sisters stuff on it and win lose or draw is spotty I would suggest you skip forward to 1990s Seven Turns when Warren haynes and Allen Woody joined the band Johnny Neel the keyboard guy that Otis couldn't think of was on that he also played harmonica and sang one was in on writing a couple too but let him go after 1 year the next album shades of 2 worlds was even better than 7 turns IMO then in 94 they did Back Where it all Began It is very good too it has a live sound to it but it was recorded in the studio on a Soundstage that belonged to Burt Reynolds ! Then 2 live albums called An Evening with 1 and 2 I liked the 1st best but they are both good and that's the last one with Dickey Betts but I really envy you man getting to hear this great music for the 1st Time!! Do you play an instrument? PS also check out Gregg Allmans. 1st solo album "Laid Back "from 1973 it is great different but great he re - does "Midnight Rider " and he it is better than the ABB s version IMHO and Dickey Betts did 2 albums in the late 70s called Dickey Betts and Great Southern and Atlanta s Burning Down I like those too and don't forget the ABB s first 4 LPS I am sure you can find all of these albums on CZcams if you ask for "full album " Let Me know what you think about this music

Hey Otis. Love the channel. Never met Dickey. However, I'm or around 1998 I was at a Brothers show at the Rivera Ballroom in Chicago. At the end of the 2nd tune he flung a pick out to the crowd, didn't see him do it but it hit me right in the face. "WTF was that?'I said to myself. Looked down, Guitar pick w Dickey Betts scrolled on pick in elegant cursive. Met Warren outside Buddy Guys Legends when I was 20. Knocked on Mukes bus for am autograph. The door opened. Mr Haynes was the coolest fuckin gentleman on the planet amd signed mybt shirt. He didn't have to. But he did. Crazy.

I admire your holding back on your more negative story telling, the world has enough negativity. That said, ive been writting a book for a couple years, this book started over an experience i had in the military. The project quickly turned into much more. I explained my project to my service buddies and could hear the concern through the phone and cryptic texts. I explained this book project was not to put anyone person or what they've done out there. Everyone was relieved, i tell some good natured events we survived, as well as one major dangerous event that changed many of us. The only questionable stories are of myself. I believe ive wztched you over these years to listen to positive life stories. Rock on Ottis 🤘

Otis - I had an employee a few years back who saw Dickie every chance he got- and had carte blanche for backstage. He was a tatoo artist named Neil Grant (Tatoo Neil) and he tatooed everyone in the Allman Brothers backstage at some point - even Greg Allman- who in turn, tatooed his autograph onto Neil's arm because he wanted to try out doing it. Neil followed Dickie after the "Cher" days and not Greg Allman, but he loved Dickie and called him his friend. I heard some pretty wild stories from him about backstage with that whole crew. Thanks for a great video - it brought back a memory of a great guy (now passed) that was Tatoo Neil

Thank you again Otis for what you do here. I want to ask a question. I have asked before but nobody knew I guess. Here is the background for the question. About 1970 in Water Valley Mississippi. A little place called Country Music World. Johnny Russell came from Nashville to play a show on Saturday night. Nobody there knew who Johnny Russell was at that point in time. Now here is real question. Johnny brought a man with him who was a great guitar player and Johnny introduced him as Dickey I believe. Dicky had a guitar that had a string bender mounted at the peg head. It bent the strings behind the nut and it had a rod that went down the neck almost to the body of the guitar. He operated this string bender with his thumb. He got some wild sounds out of his guitar and Johnny called him Wild Man. And wild he was. I hope somebody is familiar with this man and know who he was. This has been over 50 years ago so you are probably going to be about my age. I will be 75 next month. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Now 10 years down the road, I'm ok with the $$ but I'm paying a high price for my poor health decisions. In terms of composition in rock music, a lot of people have gotten way more credit than they deserve than Dickey Betts has, which is a shame. People often mention how the original Allman Brothers established a template per the twin guitar harmonies, and they're right to. However, there aren't a lot of players from bands similar to the Allman Brothers who conceived instrumental pieces like "High Falls" "True Gravity" and "Jessica."
There is just simply no one like him and nothing like those pieces and the level of creative ambition it took to produce those compositions in American rock music. At all. They are outliers. It is truly deserving to call Dickey Betts' instrumentals "unmatched" in that respect. He is, in every sense of the word, an auteur.
I think the post-Dickey Allman Brothers were exceptional. But I would be dishonest if I pretended that there *wasn't* something fundamentally lacking after his ousting from the group, and I also think that, even worse, it affected his legacy and the recognition he got.

There's a print interview with Dickey from about 15 years ago where he discusses his exit pretty openly. When Jerry Garcia died in 1995, Dickey wanted the ABB to fill that spot as the top jam band. To that end he tried pushing the rest of the group towards his goal. However, the rest of the group was happy with the way things were going. This frustrated Dickey and led to the fool, as you said, coming out. And that ultimately led to his leaving the band.

Very much appreciate Otis and his videos, as well as his dedication to the music. Have to mention this regarding Alan Paul, the author of the new ABB book Otis has been speaking of. The ABB has been one of the loves of my life, and kind of emodies, for me, much of what is good in the world. The same for me goes for speaking up and remaining active about injustice in the world, especially when our own power and myriad influence is so consequential. What the hell am I talking about? I feel real funny about buying Mr. Paul's books when he's so adamant in supporting the ethic cleansing, apartheid and now genocide of the Palestinian people. Paul was effectively the ABB's media publicist for many years, and so I am having trouble reconciling his horrid - and embarrassing - positions on this ever more important and wide-ranging issue with such a beautiful thing in the world - the ABB's music. A shame that one tasked with representing such a beautiful thing, as he is, holds and publicly expresses positions which lack integrity. And by the way, an issue such as this is much more important than books, videos or the music. In any case, thanks Otis and best to all.

I was blessed to see the Allman Brothers band at Lakewood amphitheater in Atlanta the night that a very young Derek Trucks sat in with the band for a few songs. I believe it was his first time playing with the brothers. It was pure musical joy. I had already seen Derek play solo three times, and I knew that something special was going to happen when Dickey called him out onto the stage.O What I remember the most other than the wonderful music was watching Dickie Betts absolutely explode in musical joy. He literally jumped for joy a couple of times and played his tail off. it is one of my best musical memories. As for me, the Allman Brothers are a lot like life.. There’s pain and joy, pain, and joy. I choose the joy.

Had to tell you, love your channel, I have a second-hand Betts story, he used to come up to Newfoundland I believe in the late eighties or early nineties to a hunting and fishing camp owned by a man named Horace Sutton. My old friend Rob Kinden, just a blues guitar hobbyist and enthusiast, who was local to the area and well-liked by all, was invited to the camp and had a chance to sit in on some jamming or playing. He couldn't say enough good things about the experience. Never thought he'd be able to sit down with one of his long time guitar heroes... of course, what happens up at camp stays up at camp, so I don't have any of the real details per se!

Probably 10 yrs ago I saw this Bluegrass group called "The Special Concensus" playing a Saturday Night show at Randy Wood's shop in Bloomingdale, GA. One of the guys said, "I make half my living from music. And the other half from nuthin'." I think that's pretty typical of 99% of people in the music business. It seems to take a series of very fortunate events to ever "hit it big".

Interesting musing on some perennial questions. I basically agree with you that positive and negative qualities are intertwined. Bobby Knight, though, never seemed to confront the tension between his qualities. He definitely fed his worst tendencies.
Anyway, Dicky had to deal with Greg, who probably didn’t have the temperament to keep things going

Neither Gregg nor Dickey was well suited to be a band leader. Duane Allman was the ultimate in that role. After he died there was chaos in the ABB for many years.

Good morning Otis. I've been following and enjoying your channel for some time now and have finally subscribed.
I saw the Allman Brothers play here in Oregon on Feb. 26th 1972 at the Salem Armory. This was after the death of Duane Allman and several months before Berry Oakley's passing. I was curious as to how Dickey Betts would handle both guitar duties and I can assure you, he was utterly incredible. I recall him pulling out the bow on his Les Paul for the opening of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. A stunning show.
Your interviews with musicians and others are some of the best I have seen on YT, especially with Kenny Vaughan and Joe Pug. I look forward to these every time. Thanks again!

They're sayings in this world that you'll hear often used band then one day you hear it and it locks in your brain. I had heard " two things can be true at the same time" many times growing up, but then one day it just fit in a place in my brain and I not only understood it, but it became the way I viewed the world. I listen to all these stories about all these amazing artists that we deify oftentimes for devilish actions. I agree with what you say about the good and bad qualities being linked. That's certainly true for me. Unfortunately I've seen firsthand what a lot of these things do to the people around them so it's hard for me to champion addicts and alcoholics because I know how much pain they've inflicted upon the people that love them. However, it's that same internal struggle that led them to be an addict that generated so much amazing music. I wish that wasn't true but I don't think there's another way to see it.

When you were talking about Andy Reiss in the Polka band, were you referring to Toby's House and they play once a month at the Bavarian Bierhaus. There is a recording of them playing Africa on CZcams, but it isn't live footage or video. You peaked my interest about a Polka band playing Africa so I had to do some research and it is cool. Love Saturday morning coffee with Otis.❤🤠

I feel like there is a glass ceiling where above it the artists are more open and encouraging where below (where I am) ego and personalities get in the way of just playing together and improving. I have been in several bands where if it's not played like the record- you're out. My feeling is if it is an iconic song/riff; it needs to be precise. If it is a... top forty tune; there should be some license for expression and the moment. I listen to other players and go with them in the song. I have had players ask me what I am doing and they get frustrated when I don't stick to the recorded music. If the Lead player changes chord or key you need to follow- at least my ears tell me that. I feel like Dickey was the drill sergeant because of the drugs, alcohol and egos in the band. He had a goal and kept the band together by being a Dickey. lol
Do you ever get down and not play for a time because of the egos/situation you are in and what do you do the shake the funk?
Thank you-I am hoping to see you live someday and possibly shake your hand.

I saw the ABB 16 or 17 times from the 89' reunion tour to 2001. They were amazing shows. I only went to one show after Dickey was out and it just wasn't the same for me. Love Warren's and Derek's playing but there was a big hole missing for me. The last tour with JNeel was the Seven Turns shows and it has remained my favorite ABB show. Blues Travelers opened and they pretty new at that point and had just released their first album. Good times.

    • @mbass718
      @mbass718 Před 9 měsíci

Same with me. I saw the ABB somewhere between 15-20x with Dickie and Warren. Those were such great shows. I also saw Derek Trucks come out a few times to sit in when he was 13-15 years old. It took me a little time to get used to seeing them without Dickie but eventually I got into it. Derek Trucks and Warren were an incredible combo and I'd have to say Derek is by far one of the best slide Gtr players out there. I saw them about the same amount of times with the ABB and it got better and better as time went on. I'm thankful I got to see The ABB so many times. Their Beacon theater shows here in NY were always incredible. And Warren is easily the Gtr player I've seen more than any other guitarist between all the ABB shows, a load of Govt Mule shows.. Esp at the old Wetlands club here, and a bunch of Power jams Warren put together at the Wetlands that always had amazing musicians show up to sit in. The last power jam he did was at the old Roseland ballroom and had so many people that I loved sitting in. It was phenomenal. I remember Trey and Mike from Phish sitting in, Dave Matthews before he was selling out arenas, Noel Redding,, and way more. I don't remember Dickie ever sitting in but that would have been amazing. I got to see Dickie one last time at one of the last shows he played about 5-6 years ago at the Peach festival in PA. He had his son playing as well as Berry Oakleys' son on bass. He got a huge reception from the crowd. It was a good performance but you could see that his playing sadly wasn't anywhere close to the level he used to have. But it was cool getting to see him one last time.

My gut feeling is that Dickey's a nice guy and often enough a real nice guy. But like a lot of real nice guys if you get them to mixed up with hard alcohol they become not-so-nice
guys. Dickey's not unique there. I've known so many sweet guys when they're sober turn into raging jerks when they're drunk. Or even worse when they are living in an alcoholic daze from the day-by-day repeated addictive lifestyle. Watching Dickey's interviews he's a very easy person to like. It helps that everyone who I've seen interview him was very respectful.
I have seen Dickey VERY angry before but if I was going through what he was going through I'd be VERY angry myself.
