"It felt only natural to us that an adaptation of Tolkien's work would reflect what the world actually looks like." - Lindsey Weber, E.P. Amazon's LOTR Series, Vanity Fair (Feb. 2022) .
Peter Jackson, interview GreenCine (Dec. 2002) - "There are certainly themes Tolkien felt were important. We made a promise to ourselves at the beginning of the process that we weren't going to put any of our own politics, our own messages or our own themes into these movies. What we were trying to do was to analyse what was important to Tolkien and to try to honour that. In a way, were trying to make these films for him, not for ourselves."

To give an example of them not understanding their source material take the infamous “the past is dead” line. That line is given by Elendil. Elendil is the leader of the Faithful faction of Numenoreans. The faithful factions goals are to maintain the traditional way of life for the Numenoreans, close ties to the Lords of the West and elves. They are grateful for the gifts the Valar gave their ancestors. Therefore the past is incredibly important to Elendil’s faction and should by extension be important to Elendil himself. Now also consider that the opposing faction, King’s Men, seek to change the way of life of Numenoreans, abandon tradition. Now Elendil’s speech of the past being meaningless and the importance of moving on without sounds like a propaganda speech for the King’s Men.

WoT books have so many characters, plots and sub plots that one of the biggest problem with adapting the books for TV is deciding who/what you should keep, who/what you can combine, and who/what you can cut entirely. There's so much source material you don't need to make anything up, yet they made up a lot of stuff that not only has no basis whatsoever in the stories, but frequently contradicts the very foundational rules of that world.

"You have not seen what I have seen." - That kind of repetition is a tactic to signal that you're not engaging in an argument. It's the "broken record" technique that they taught us to use against peer pressure (to do drugs etc.) when I was in high school. Or, it's a signal that says "quiet down, I know what I'm doing." I recall the sheriff in _Twin Peaks:_ "I can get you a good rate at the Great Northern."
Galadriel's expression makes it clear: like the knights said in their previous video, the show is portraying Elrond as a mansplainer, and Galadriel, beyond the powerful and majestic lady, is now also the longsuffering woman who has to put up with men's presumption and incompetence. It's written all over her face. This trope of longsuffering competent woman dealing with men's nonsense is older than you might think: watch _National Velvet_ and observe how the old married couple interact.
Does Ar-Pharazon have six fingers on his right hand? He looks like he should. This show might actually be redeemed if they got Mark Knopfler to give it a proto-dungeon synth soundtrack.

Sums up with the fact that whatever that's being made isn't trying to be true to the original source material. Peter Jackson didn't make a COMPLETELY accurate trilogy of films with LOTR but at least he tried his best and succeeded for the most part. Even then I agree that JRR Tolkien probably wouldn't have loved it due to the slightest of inaccuracies. ROP is just... all over the place, with stuff like Hobbits (even though they shouldn't have existed during this point in time) being set up for references.
Edit: Oh my goodness, ISILDUR'S SUPPOSED TO BE HERE?! I don't think he's supposed to be alive when Sauron was in the process of forging the Rings. Sauron is supposed to corrupt the Nine Kings into Nazgul first, right? That took years, maybe even decades, with how long it took for the Kings to turn. And these Kings are presumably from all over Middle Earth since there's Khamul the Easterling as one of the Nine. Unless it's a time skip, but that would go into when Sauron finally has the One Ring and waged his war against the Free Peoples of Middle Earth.

He had distributed all or almost all as Annatar, prior to surrendering to Ar-Pharazon. After a decade or 2 he convinced Ar-Pharazon to attack Valinor, this destroyed Numenor, with Elendil and Isildur escaping by disobeying Ar-Pharazon's orders. "The past is dead. We will either move forward or we will die with it." That line is given to Elendil, the leader of the Faithful. However, there is some hope that he is talking to Isildur, and the Past he is referring to is Numenor, now corrupted by the King's Men / Sauron and hence the old, good Numenor of the Faithful is dead. And moving forward means preparing to emigrate to the Middle-earth rather than die with the corrupted Numenor when it is judged. That would actually work.
Now, if it were Elendil saying that Isildur needs to stop honoring the Valar and be friends with the Elves, and get on the program to be a King's Man, that... that would be a travesty. Given what they have done to the other characters' personalities, I cannot discount this option, either.

    • @Ardko.
      @Ardko. Před rokem +1

Another thing about Tolkiens "OG Galadriel": In her younger years she was very much a warrior too. The show is not really inaccurate there and they have a fair interpretation of Tolkiens words.
Here is what he wrote on Galadriel:
Galadriels mother given name is Nerwen meaning "Man-Maiden" which her mother gave her specifically because she was of unusal high and strength.
In Letter 348 he describes her of having back then been of "amazonian disposition" - a descirption Tolkien ever only uses to describe women like Eowyn or Haleth - you know, women who went fighting. Which is something Galadriel also did. In the Unfinished Tales we read that when the fist kinslaying took place and Galadriels group arrived she immediatly jumped into the action and batteld Feanors sice fearcly. "Indeed she and Celeborn fought heroically in defence of Alqualonde" Unfinished Tales, Hisotry of Galadriel and Celeborn p. 299 - some of the last things Tolkien noted down on Galadriel befor his death, which was not the Version C. Tolkien used when constructing the Silmarillion.
Tolkien further writes that only when Galadriel grew older did wisdom win out over pride and desire.
From History of Middle Earth 12, Shibboleth of Feanor p. 338:
"though she fought fiercely against Feanor in defence of her mother's kin, she did not turn back. Her pride was unwilling to return, a defeated suppliant for pardon; but now she burned with desire to follow Feanor with her anger to whatever lands he might come, and to thwart him in all ways that she could. Pride still moved her when, at the end of the Elder Days after the final overthrow of Morgoth, she refused the pardon of the Valar for all who had fought against him, and remained in Middle-earth. It was not until two long ages more had passed, when at last all that she had desired in her youth came to her hand, the Ring of Power and the dominion of Middle-earth of which she had dreamed, that her wisdom was full grown and she rejected it, and passing the last test departed from Middle-earth for ever."
Those are Tolkiens Words too, thats OG Galadriel too. Her character is more then the bit we see in LotR!
