    Hi, I just found your channel while looking for greenhouse tips. We are lucky enough to have been given a 7.5 meter by 3 meter Hartley greenhouse. We have a few more glass panes to fit before it’s weather proof. It’s been an epic task.
    I am just looking into heat sinks, storing water in a large black container to hold heat in the greenhouse. It’s a massive space to heat and fill.
    I look forward to watching all your greenhouse and gardening tips.
    I’m off to watch all your previous videos.
    Keep up the great work. Jo X

      Hmm, it might help if I direct you, as I have hundreds of videos, and I know a lot of folk enjoy just going back to 2016 and starting at the beginning, but that's a lot of screen time, so

    I'm in the southwest of England and start stuff indoors. When do you remove the lids??

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Cydney,
      I tend to always have the vents fully open to allow airflow. Once the seedlings are looking strong and have their leaves fully open I take the lids off during the day. Then keep an eye and when the second leaves open I take the lids away completely.
      Obviously you'll have to decide what's best based on your environment and what you are growing, but always allow for airflow and just be aware of the air temperatures.

    We're up in Aberdeenshire so slightly colder. I've got Cucumber and Tomato seeds in a couple of little propagators indoors at the moment, planning to transfer to greenhouse in a month or two (I think). Would you suggest sticking Spring Onion, Radish and Iceberg Lettuce in the propagators to help them? The packet suggests sowing directly outdoors but perhaps not ideal in Scotland in March. (All the above are from a "Salad Favourites Collection" packet I bought, more of an experiment than anything. All on the cheap as it'll probably end in disaster!)

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 2 lety +2

      hey Gavin,
      not sure if you've seen my recent videos on what you can grow over winter and early spring but I've got white lisbon spring onions out in the garden now (they are the winter-hardy variety). Brought them on in the greenhouse over winter and planted out in the garden a few weeks ago. Same with lettuce, I've also got winter gem lettuce and mustard greens out in the garden that I brought on in the greenhouse over winter. Again the trick is to go for the winter-hardy types. Starting more spring onion and lettuce etc now but not using the winter-hardy types. Again though, bringing stuff on in the greenhouse to then transplant out. That's the whole point in having a greenhouse 😀

      @@eliandkate Wow thanks for the quick and lengthy reply, that's really appreciated. The spring onions in this multi-pack are White Lisbon, so that's a happy coincidence that they might be a good variety. Our greenhouse is water and wind tight but needs a good clean out. Seems a shame it's sitting there not being used. For some reason I didn't consider growing seeds in there, only considered tomato's and cucumbers which I attempted with below-average success in 2020. I'm just on my lunch break so will make a point in watching your playlist videos later on :o)

    Great video--I've been trying to learn how I will start my seeds next spring in my new greenhouse. Do you use heat mats in the greenhouse to start the seeds?

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 4 lety +1

      No heat mats. I don't have power in the greenhouse, so no heating. Hence why I go with the double wrap. Gives me the best chance of creating a good starting environment before april :)

    • @bwolf0003
      @bwolf0003 Před 4 lety

      @@eliandkate I imagine I won't need it either here in Kentucky. I have two grow mats so I will experiment and try some with and some without! First time starting seeds in a greenhouse vs. indoors which is heated so we will see.

      you might find it's better this way. Less likely to get the leggy weak seedlings trying to find the light source :)

  • @ironian24

    Hello from sunny Norfolk, I have the vitopod 100 watt version with lights to stop the plants getting leggy.
    They did start getting leggy until I added the lights from vitopod, I am now hoping I have the perfect set up for starting seeds in January.
    I also built my own 5m x 3m victorian greenhouse last year and finished it in early june, i did a video on my channel if your interested about the greenhouse build from start to finish.
    It so happens I litterally just got my vitopods up and running today jan 28th and franctically filled it up with seeds lol.
    How do you get on with veg growing there? can you start early with lights perhaps? I know your vitopod takes lights.

    What advice can you give about how much to open vents on propagators if at all?

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před rokem +1

      always open them fully. You need ventilation to prevent mould etc.
      Once seedlings have sprouted, remove the lid.
      If you are using the propagators to try to protect seedlings in the cold, then again keep the vents open and don't leave the lids on all the time.
      They are great for keeping a nice humid environment, which is why we use them for seed starting, but obviously this is also the perfect environment for nasty stuff to grow.

    Hi Eli. A lot of my seed packets say propagate at 18-21 degrees. Do you think that is too warm?

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Před 3 lety

      Hey Pip :D
      hmmm I'd say if the seed packet has those instructions then that's probably just right (in my best goldilocks voice).
      It may be that that is the best temperature, if you go lower they may be slower to germinate.
