Every batch (from pre-school to college) has a unique theme song that they'll remember and treasure for the rest of their lives. And for sure, they'll all sing it again and again during class reunions. I could still remember my high school graduation song "Somewhere" from the West Side story, some 30 plus years ago. 🤗🤗🤗

We did this during our HS graduation as well back in ‘72 in the Philippines (yes-I’m an old lady now, in fact, I just retired). There was a big production before receiving our diplomas. It was a pain rehearsing though because coordination was hard but I was able to coordinate, train, and then we all performed for our teachers, principals, and founders. We did a medley of all the “goodbye” songs we knew back then including “Nananana, nananana, hey, hey, hey, goodbye! etc…” complete with accompaniment, harmony, and lots of enthusiasm. Even got to design our graduation dresses (white, closed necked mini dress in this really soft, thin, material with fitted waist and short, biased cut, flowing skirt with long, bell shaped sleeves for the girls paired with white, 2 inch, squared-heeled, close toed shoes as well as the outfits for the boys (long sleeved white shirt with black ribbon tie, black pants, and black shoes-everything had to be uniform since we were in a Catholic school). We didn’t wear graduation gowns then either. It was a lot of fun for us! Didn’t realize that not only did they not have performances during graduations in the US but that they were also quite boring in comparison. Hahahaha!

Yup, that's Philippines graduation. We always have graduations songs, usually 3 songs. And everyone is required to attend (like a week of) practice singing before the graduation day. Everyone is singing on graduation day. There is no main character or main singers. I really miss this singing culture of my Philippines. I'm in the US.

I remember back in 2001, our graduation song was "I Turn To You" that served as our Thanksgiving song to all the parents and teachers who guided us along the way.
This moment also gave me chills. ❤️

its already a tradition in every graduating batch to have a song with some interpretative dance if i may say. i suddenly remember when the pope came and the crowd sang "let us tell the world of his love"- a filipino composed song for the world youth day attended by millions wc i believe was also used in other countries when the pope visited.

Our group was always assigned to Soprano while Alto, tenor etc assigned to other sections. And finally before graduating highschool we had a memorable graduation song.

its not only graduation which is musical because every day life is musical in the philippines, if you study about the imdigineous culture of the philippines music is part of every day life. Indigeneous people sings while planting and harvesting rice, singing while paddling boats, singing while walking, singing while praying, singing while peaching water. If you live with filipinos you may tink that you are part of musical play.

This was always one of the best moments. Most schools here in the Philippines do this. The stress the music teachers go through though to make this happen. I remember my highschool music teacher was really a very strict and scary one. But man, I forgot what we sang during my highschool graduation.. Not sure with other schools, but in my province since we don't really have that many students, when practicing the graduation song, the students get separated according to their vocal designations. So we have people singing base to soprano just like in a choir.

It's a tradition in the Philippines. Every graduation batch in elementary/grade school and high school always has a song number on their graduation day. It's sort of a tribute to parents, but the song also serves as bonding music for the batch. I even still remember mine - I'll Remember by Madonna. Heck, even the titos and titas (and most likely our lolos and lolas!) went through it during their time. 😆

Agree. In the school where I teach, the graduating levels (grade 6, grade 10 and grade 12) are asked to compose their graduation song (lyrics, musical arrangement and everything) with assistance from their Music teacher. Then they have a per section competition to choose the batch song. I am impressed with how they can compose their own song for this event.

I remember my graduation because of this. Usually there would be different hymns and not just one song. For example during my high school years we sang the hymn of the school, then the one of the city, then a song of the country and various other things too. It depends on the school on how much practice we get. Usually we get practice by class before one big rehearsal. Oh and we do this every graduation. And yes even elementary school students.

Our graduation song in highschool was Next in Lime. It was during the 90s. How time flies. I miss simple life then. My grandmother's and mother's time was also much simpler than mine and I love hearing their stories when they're still alive. More open places, more skies and trees. Cleaner beaches and no traffic. Neighbors are nice and helpful too. It's like a different world.
