I've said this before, but it bears repeating. Miku is literally the "man behind the curtain" in this band. She is the mastermind that has held this band together and propelled it forward when it looked as though it was over before it started. There's a reason Saiki calls Miku "busy girl". It's because she wears many hats and she is constantly working toward Band-Maid's success. She is far more than just the rhythm guitarist, backing vocals, and lyricist. She is the glue that binds them all together. She is the founder, spokes-woman, business mind, public relations, costume designer, artwork and video concepts often come from her including Easter eggs in those videos, and of course, rhythm guitar, lyrics and vocal arrangements along with Saiki. I'm sure there is more, but those are what I've become aware of. The woman is exceptionally intelligent and multi-talented. She is a relentless workhorse in this band. Without her, there might be a Band-Maid, but it wouldn't be what it is today.

I saw Band-Maid in Dallas, on their last US tour in 2019. Made the 4-hour drive from Houston and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The venue was crappy (House of Blues not only messed up the VIP meet & greet, but then put them in the tiny upstairs room, which was way too small for the crowd) but their show was awesome. No opening band, just them, and they gave it their all. Loved it from start to finish. If they come anywhere near you, go; you won't be sorry. :-)

    Agreed sir.
BAND-MAID feels like the band that was designed for me as well, or that I would form myself if I could.
The fact that all members want to be there and care enough to craft their music from the bottom to the top and continue the tweaks to play them live and then throw in the amount of energy and fun they throw at the audiences at every one of their live shows...
I really hope I can see them live one day...

It is absolutely amazing that these five ladies have released four major albums in four years. They have literally flooded the market with top notch modern rock music. The level of creativity they are showing since they started writing their music is outstanding. There are not many bands that can boast of that level of music songwriting. The article "The Furies Unleashed" a review of Unseen World in the magazine Raijin Rock is very advisable.

If you haven't already you really need to check out the entire interview that Herman Li did with Miku and Kanami. Also the Herman Li "audition" for Band Maid. Both are on Twitch. Of course there is heavily edited version on CZcams. But those are worth checking out. I love the segment when Herman brings out his dog. Kanami transformed into a 6 year old girl. Before I always loved her guitar playing. After that I fell in love with her.

    • @w.b.562
      @w.b.562 Před 3 lety +5

      completely agree with everything!
Herman Li managed to do one of the best interviews with them, despite not being an interviewer, not doing all this professionally. Miku and Kanami were nervous in the beginning, but the funny thing - Herman was just as well :D It's soo damn nice to see. You could tell at every minute that each of them enjoyed the talking to the fullest. Miku got into her professionalism after a very nervous start, but you could see her more from her "normal" (~real) side, she wasn't playing things up nearly as much as she does in japanese interviews. And watching (and listening to) Kanami is such a treat. She is literally like a little child, hiding behind and clinging to Miku, but when she speaks its soft and well spoken, highly educated way of speech. Sadly, Herman didn't include the dog part into the youtube cut - Kanami just exploded with her loud "KAWAIIIIII!!!!!" when seeing the dog XD
      Very worth checking out!
(the youtube cut is pretty well done, the whole twitch thing was over 2h afair, you can still find it there, sub to Herman channel needed)

I intend no shade to anyone who got off the ride at Unseen World; if you read shade into what I say next, it's just because I'm not eloquent enough to find the right words. Artists need to grow and change and they did it here while still retaining their core sound - they are still identifiably Band-Maid - that it's truly a remarkable achievement. To be on the ride so long and get off now? That's just so heartbreaking to me. They are on such an exciting journey and I hope fans who weren't as into this album delight in its success regardless. They are on the cusp of being one of the premier hard rock acts on the planet and if the fucking world ever settles down enough to let them support this album on tour I think that'll tip them over the edge.

It happened to very meny bands, I call it the The Beatles phenomena, from sweet pop music to psychedelia and rock, pissed off a great lot of fans. But they didn't care, they even stopped touring for good in 1966 to focus on writing the music they wanted to. Band-Maid are getting better by the day, eventually their skill level will produce songs of another type. Dream Theater is another example, they completely changed even album to album. Whatever Band-Maid do in the future I will follow them as I do with whatever Dream Theater do. I like to hear musicians express themselves without freely the way their ideas comes out. Band-Maid have not made bad songs yet, maybe they never will. Greetings from a Norwegian Band-Maidiac.

Miku playing like Kanami = stretch goal. :)
I understand how you feel about this band. Like many people, I learned about BAND-MAID less than 2 years ago. The Studio Coast version of "Play" hit me like a train, and all I could think was, "I'm not sure what this is, but I love it, and I HAVE to hear more of it." ANY band can have that one moment where they mess around and a great hook manages to escape. The more I heard of BAND-MAID, the more obvious it became that what I'd heard wasn't a "one hit," it was on relative par with every other BAND-MAID song. They hadn't outreached themselves in a moment of lucky inspiration, they created and crafted and shaped and polished to create a wonderful song. And then they moved on and did it again, and again, and again. Most impactful to me, their music spoke to me. There's no vaccine for that, and I damned sure wouldn't want one if there were.

And that is the reason why I love Miku the most ( honestly I love them all ). We all know, that she is still learning very hard to play guitar, even she has made such a great effort. Musically she has not that capabilty like any of the others. She has a great voice, but it is not the right voice for their music, so she is only the 2nd ( I don't think it is only backing ).
But.........she is doing everything, singing, play guitar, writing songs, playing with the fans and making jokes, talking in interviews, she has such a big positive energy and she brings herself totally into the band, steps back for the effort of them all.

Miku always kinda wanted to be a rock star. She was in a pop group before bandmaid, but it wasnt scratching her itch as much so she made the band instead. I think miku has a real knack for being a good lead and is very personable, especially compared to saiki. So im not surprised she wants show her skills off more instead of being reduced to just the rhythm guitarist, and it makes me happy to see miku getting more of a spotlight with stuff like her solo in sayonakidori and her own intro in play. As for her solo songs, she had rock in me and time, but she also had beauty and the beats, big dad, and summer drive from some of their older work, so shes not new to this. Also, i think its funny about the losing fans thing with unseen world. Conqueror had that affect on more people, where it was kind of a step away from the hard rock and more into a pop rock, and people werent a fan of that. Personally, i think conqueror shows bandmaids range more than unseen world does, because that album was really different from their older stuff and had a lot more unique elements to it. The change in sound i think scared a lot of fans off, who probably came back for unseen world, but i bet unseen world scared away a lot of the conqueror fans too. IMO, theres no type of music that could really scare me away with them, because they blend sounds and genres so seamlessly that every song just sounds good regardless of how light or heavy it is, and i kinda like the changeup with the lighter sounding songs. With how often they write and all the pent up energy they had, i wouldnt be shocked if we get even more new music this year

In the May _Player_ interview (translation by the invaluable t-shinji on the subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/o5lnk7/interview_with_miku_kobato_and_kanami_on_the_may/), they directly address the differences between the albums. Each album reflects where they're at emotionally and regarding goals, but is also kind of a reaction to or counterweight to the previous album.
"Kobato: When we made Conqueror, we wanted to increase songs everyone would be able to listen to calmly at servings. Every time we make an album, we’re not like “Let’s make an album”, and we pack songs we want to play at that moment, po. So it becomes unbalanced in a sense. We always release an album that shows what we are at that moment. At the time of World Domination, we were about to go on a tour, so we wrote songs with momentum everyone can sing along, and gathered them in the album World Domination. But it became too intense, so we wrote songs everyone can listen to calmly during servings, which resulted in Conqueror, po. This time, it contains our frustration of writing songs during the COVID pandemic and not being able to do servings, po."
I mean if someone followed them from _Just Bring It_ to _World Domination_ to _Conqueror_ and then heard _Unseen World_ and went, "Oh heck, I guess every album from here on out is going to be just like this one," that person has not been paying attention. But I think most fans are like, "Yeah, I like album X more than album Y, but I still listen to Y." (Often followed a few months later with, "Y has now become my favorite album, go figure.")

Totally echo your thoughts! As great of a band they are and have been we possibly have yet to see what they potentially can create. I believe their are just scratching the surface. When every single member believes they need to improve then you have to believe their appetite has yet to be satisfied. which is a crazy thought coming from such a great band that already has such an extensive catalog of great tracks in such a condensed period of time. Their productive output along with quality of that output has me convinced after all that is said and done they will go down as the most prolific and influential band the world has seen! So it falls upon us to illuminate and support this band to ensure they can sustain and thrive to help them at least selfishly satisfy our appetites. Band-Maid doing Band-Maid Cocktail (sweet /bitter/strong flavor) as always.. different flavor depends on my mood🤭

I think it's fair to say that the way so many of us feel as we do about the ladies and their musical quest is knowing that ultimately the quality and talent can never be over appreciated. In spite of the fact that there are a lot of fans filling out gigs home and abroad, and that they have a slot in a large mainstream record store like HMV (which can be a sign of perhaps how prominent a band may be), we know that there truly isn't a broad public awareness of them, nor of other bands alongside them such as Lovebites, Nemophila, Maximum the Hormone etc.., to the extent that other artists seem to get almost daily exposure on repeat. We could spend some time ruminating on the politics etc, but at the end of the day I feel we love them because of their authenticity, artistic capacity and commitment to the craft. It also helps that they're trapped in a terminally kawaii feedback loop (even out of costume and context). Who can resist their sheer charm and character?

The song order is completely different on the boxed set with the Blu-Ray. The older style is on the first disc and the newer on the second. And Manners is on both for some reason. Why in the world they used the order they did on the other releases is a total mystery to me. This is the order:
    Disc 1:
    1-After Life
    2-Why Why Why
    3-Youth
    4- (SAYONAKIDORI)-Nightingale
    5-Chemical Reaction
    6-Manners

    Disc 2:

    3-Manners (again)
    4-Black Hole
    5-(HONKAI) -Ambition

    7-Warning
This makes much more sense than the other releases.

A band that isn't true to themselves and only tries to recreate the past is a band that has reached their peak. Band-Maid has a vision, they are still on that journey and I am willing to follow them. Hopefully they one day get the international attention and respect that they truly deserve. Miku is the branding. I hate to break it to you fellas but in Japan, Miku is the marketing they need. She is cute, playful and always positive. She works damn hard to promote the band. Her Omajinai time is kawaii and I have not seen another band do that...it's genius.
She draws the crowds and she also writes many of the lyrics. Personally, I don't remember the music more than the lyrics.
I watch all your band maid reactions and some of your other vids; I always like to hear your POV but I don't think you give her enough credit for the lyrics. She has some catchy lyrics. I wrote something similar in another on another reaction. About the difference between how they were before B-M and how they are now.....How much happier they are. In their early stuff before B-M they looked like "Is this really what I am doing/wanted"..certainly with Akane...You can see they were not doing what their hearts wanted...But now..they are all smiles..because they are doing what they always wanted..making and playing great music with like minded people/freinds with whom they get on with like a house on fire. And being able to do that not just in your own country..but around the world for people they don't know..or would of ever meet..and know they love you for it!....That's all you can ask for if your a musician....And we have Miku to thank for it. If she didn't keep pushing her dream the chances are the other members would still be doing the stuff they were before B-M...They may have just stayed those unknow background players...taking any job to pay the bills..or even given up all together on music...And what a loss to the world that would have been. Miku's drive made this band....I am so glad that when she looked for members for her band...dispite not being a musician ..she knew Kanami was the person with the potential to get this band off the ground.....It just so happened miracle of miracle's, that Kanami knew the perfect drummer for the job..who in turn knew the perfect bassist for the job..She struck gold!..And for me..it's the whole package...Miku's dream...and four very talented ladies who came together to create something magical and so much greater than the sum of its parts...There is no band like them as far as I am concerned...And hasn't been for many many years...I just I hope I get to see them LIVE one day...before it's to late for me.

At the time I was just so excited for new info that I don't think I even noticed how different it is. The thing about this interview was it gave us some insight into what the album would sound like. But I don't think many people were expecting what "Unseen World" turned out to be.
The "old style" songs are: "After Life", "Why Why Why" (the jam-session song), "Youth" (only available on the Limited Edition of Unseen World), "Sayonakidori", "Chemical Reaction", "I Still Seek Revenge", and "Manners". They consider "Manners" a song that bridges the two styles so they consider it part of both styles. The Limited Edition has the songs split into two CDs and "Manners" is on both CDs.
The "new style" songs are: "Giovanni", "HGK", "Manners", "Black Hole", "Honkai", "No God", and "Warning!".

I would just like to add the nicknames I have come for them for a long time:
Kanami: Pixie. Shy, fleeting, impossible to catch, in your face with her magical tools, always fomenting new tricks to catch you off guard...
Misa: Dragon. In Japan Dragons are considered as the prime protectors of humanity. Shy but highly dangerous. Dark but with a bewitching smile.
Akane: In Japan she would be called "Taiko no Oni/太鼓の鬼/Drum-crashing Ogre (Ogress). In Japanee lore Thunder is the sound of giant drums banged by Ogres on clouds. She would probably call on Misa to accompany her with Lightnings!
Saiki: Spellbinder. That fey Lady does not smile often, but beware when she does! She can sing both like a siren and a banshee and melt people too insane to come near her!
Miku: Magician. Devious, purposeful, too many hidden talents under her flitting image. If she happens to come to you in the company of Spellbinder, you had better catch the next tsunami or end up as a babbling slave!
J.R.R. Tolkien, wherever he is now, is probably writing a sequel to the LOTR: Ladies of The Rock!
More seriously, the whole interview was conducted in very formal Japanese! LOL

Spot on comments. Their integrity and humility is what does it for me. Since learning about the band (you may have been one of the first I watched on them), I found it beautiful how they decided to/continued to support Miku. How many other bands would have just got rid of her once it was determined that she didn't have the right voice to lead. That must have been a heart-wrenching moment for her. If I was interviewing them, I'd be interested in that period of her initial guitar tuition with Kanami.
Something else I've picked up on was that I think they continually revise their older tracks, especially for shows and they give Miku more and more to do as she gets better ... for instance her call/response with Misa in Play (which you highlighted at the time). In the earlier version of the song, it was full on Misa solo I think.
I am concerned with them now entering this full on developmental phase though, yes they're looking to improve/enhance their skills but that will likely turn off a few people (maybe like me) that aren't musicians and won't understand the nuance and only see a wall of noise coming at them. We'll see.

You know, it's okay for people to like what they like and dislike what they don't. There's no need to be aggressive or gatekeep over it. I love the overwhelming majority of what BAND-MAID has done, but I recognize that there's the possibility that they may grow in a direction I'm not interested in following, and that's okay! If that happens, they may also produce something further in the future that brings me in again. It's a little like saying "if you don't like me at my St. Anger, you don't deserve me at my Ride the Lightning". Why get so nasty over it?

Listened to they're first album in it's entirety last night, if you were to do a comparison between the first album and the last the difference is quite a lot, bands like BM with members who are progressing as artists will evolve musically, it's how the process works, did the Beatles sound the same in 1970 as they did upon the creation of they're first recordings? I think not, they grew as artist's and applied that growth to the righting/execution process, and as that happens the depth and quality of the product improves. I'm confident that just like the Beatles 55+years later we're still talking about them and they're music is still relevant, I'm confident Band Maid will also be relevant and spoken about in many years to come due to such a brobdingnagian contribution to music when the world needed it the most.

I relate to your comments regarding how you want them to succeed. It is almost like being a proud father to them. Your rooting for their success. As for MIKU - we should remember that this was her idea and her conception to bring a band together. She is one smart cookie - she is the Mick Jagger to the other Keith Richards in the band. She knows what she is capable of and she knows when to let the others do their thing. As a manager\leader of the band she is very considerate to the other members. From changing their costumes to make them feel more comfortable to not dictating how songs should be written, etc.. I think\hope they go a long way in this career, and much like them I am waiting for the concerts to begin again.

You prob know this , but the songwriting in this band is pretty unique. Kanami makes a demo recording of the song and sends it to everyone else to fabricate their parts. Of course communication is excellent between them all, This band is all about the songs with egos tossed aside. they all want to do what is best for the particular song.

What you are seeing as shyness, I think might more exactly be modesty, which is a high value in Japanese culture. While some of our musical stars brag on themselves and insult each other on Twitter in an effort to get attention, and their gullible fans join in, in Japan it is more admirable to soft-pedal one's own talents and accomplishments (at least most of the time) and express respect for others.
Another value they express is the paradox of seeking to achieve a state of no errors, perfection, and yet looking beyond and continuously improving. Doing your best while raising the bar for what that means. Part of the culture's over-the-top work ethic.
And that is just what the Maids do and have been doing their whole lives, that has helped shape who they are.
They are very rock and roll. Onstage at least, they have no problem being loud and strident when that seems called for. And yet also, in many wonderful and charming ways, very Japanese.

Dragon Cries is disliked by some...not because it is simple (sounds like a Hendrix song) but many think it is overly compressed and the video is pretty dark and depressing. A lot of folks that didn't like the studio version...liked the live version that came out on Shibuya DVD. Start Over is perhaps more disliked. It is simple and video is cringe worthy in places but it is another song they did live at one of their online concerts and sounded great.
Why Why Why is the jam session song (particularly the beginning).

I get what you are saying about a band needing/wanting to grow and explore their musicianship, and one of the things I like about Band-Maid *is* that they sound different than everything else out there, but ya, for sure everyone has a comfort zone for their personal tastes. My fav song on the latest is actually Chemical Reaction lol, and I really miss the little hat Akane years. :( With the progression of things, sometimes the original starts to take off into avant-garde territory, and the less common appreciation. Poetry, Art, Fashion, and Music all seem to eventually get a bit goofy, where only the "professionals" and critics swoon over the subject, and to everyone else, it simply appears to be incomprehensible. Totally not saying that about Unseen World or Band-Maid, but ya, I'm less likely to put in the newer CD and enjoy a drive, than one of their earlier CD's.

I think Unseen World is a thousand times better & I am a huge fan of their "older" stuff (especially World Domination). I have tried a hundred times to get into Conqueror, and with the exception of two or three songs, I just can't. But the first time I heard every song on Unseen World, I was hooked. Unfortunately I think that the japanese rock business is crappie for the bands that want bigger goals worldwide. They seem to have an anime business model that is content to have a healthy Japanese market to keep the industry at home thriving. I realize that the world (of course the music industry as a whole) has been heavily affected by the lock downs. However, it appears that "the suits" in the Band Maid camp has yet to make efforts for Western distribution for their content. Band Maid has been in existence for over 10 years now, and I do not foresee them coming close to where I live in the states (Ohio). The Mega japanese superstar Hyde has been around almost twice as long as Band Maid and it finally looks like he is making an assertive effort to break into the states. If your goal is"World Domination" you have to make yourself accessible to the rest of the world. If they finally lift this lockdown burden in Japan hopefully there will be a more assertive effort on the part of the Band Maid management to get them to rest of the world. Online concerts have been a lifeline for the fans. Here's hoping for the future that we Maidiacs will be able to experience our superheroes in the flesh of actual reality instead of virtual.

Many people seem to want to blame management/record companies for not pushing this band to #1 in the western market like its just so easy to do so, like how are you supposed to do it? Theres also plenty of complaints but never any answers on how. First of the the list of bands that the average person could name from Japan or any foreign country is probably pretty close to zero so you are already at a disadvantage. Just like in Japan, USA or UK or wherever, most people listen to music from their own country. Spending time and money to do huge promotions in foreign countries could potentially help, or could do nothing and just be a giant waste of money.
They have been recently adding subtitles to videos and I would say have been making more of an effort except for not having JPU records deal with Unseen World that was a pretty big mistake. Most Japanese bands of their size would not be touring USA/Europe in 2018/19 like they did and I am pretty sure they had much bigger plans for 2020 that got ruined.

    • @scottmcgregor562
      @scottmcgregor562 Před 3 lety +2

@@minchomania well for one having western/American distribution for their content. Paying upwards of $50 for a cd with shipping doesn't make them too accessible. Believe it or not there are still brick and mortar that sell cds, as well as Bluerays/DVDs. Hell even an american distributor, so we do not have to pay rediculous shipping costs. I have heard some people say "if you're not willing to pay, then you're not a true fan. Getting content to as many people as possible as many countries as possible will make them more accessible. Sure it does. There are a few cd/vinyl stores by me. The customers that frequent there are music fans. and many times are just looking for something new. The people that work there are always playing new music in the store and myself and customers many times are asking who is being played. If we like what we hear, we purchase right there. Also customers know each other and turn each other on to music. So yes it's rather old school, but it definitely promotes.

Subtitles and prices of items are issues for fans of the band, but I dont believe have much of an impact on promoting the band to a wider audience. Your average Joe is not gonna care what prices are if they dont even know who Band-Maid is.
