This was exactly right at the time the torch was passed. The 80’s Pistons physicality and Chicago’s biggest rival meets the 90’s version of them in the Knicks!
That 92 team was the best Knicks team they had in the 90s IMO. Ewing, Oakley, X-Man, Gerald Wilkins, John Starks, Mark Jackson. They pushed a very good Bulls team with MJ to 7 games.
@@Kennyisdarkvanilla they should have won on 93/94 year. They wrre up 3-2 and blew game 3. Yes Charles Smith screwed us that year or was it this year. You see, THIS is the NBA I wish I grew up on!!! 90s physicality, heart, and HoFers. I didn’t even know this was actually a matchup that happened in the playoffs so now I can’t wait to find more highlights from this series!
McDaniel and Oakley vs Rodman…. You don’t see physical basketball like that anymore. Every possession mattered , be it preseason or season. Let alone playoffs. Thanks for the upload man! I get to remember the climax of quality basketball!
@@gaucho5073 You're exactly right. Back then you would watch more than who's handling the ball. The games were so much more intense. Because the fans wanted it just as much as the player's and vice versa.
Rodman played his heart out every season, that’s why he was one of my fav players… if he took off one possession the whole team would be mad at him and he would be mad at himself! (They don’t make them like that anymore)
The Knicks and Pistons were headed in opposite directions at this point but their brief intersection as relative equals in 91-92 made for a great 1st round series.
Excellent upload of a often overlooked playoff series. This was a passing of the torch from the Bad Boys to the broad street bully Knicks. This was a tough 5 game set.
I mean, the Bulls kinda had already taken the torch from the Pistons at this point and the Knicks never won a title so they never really received the torch.
Starks was the Knicks' sniper back in the day and Laimbeer was a stretch five that can pop it from deep but was never an athlete that can hang with Hakeem, Ewing, Admiral, Parrish.
Notice how physically tough this was back then...everyone looks tough and scary. Half the players in the NBA couldn't handle this tough defense and big strong players...they are built like girls now
Patrick was always more effective when he was slimmer and lighter… look at how athletic he was and his conditioning become poorer and poorer and as he got heavier and slower … this 1992 team was probably their best chance at contending against Chicago. 1997 team also honorable mention too. This was a bitter sweet series as this was the twilight of a proud dynasty in Detroit and NY emulated them but lacked the mental toughness to get to that next level.
Actually conditioning wasn’t the problem. Conditioning was actually pretty good when Pat Riley was the coach of the Knicks, It required to lose a certain amount of body fat. When Riley unfortunately left the Knicks because Dave Checketts the President of the garden at the time who was too busy playing with himself and didn’t give Pat Riley the peace of the pie that’s when Patrick Ewing got a little bit chubby but still was effective.
@@danielgrassi4343 I was a diehard Knicks fan of the 90s and yes, Checketts pissed me off with not giving Pat more control over personnel but Riley got the most outta his players and Pat was still a great center but if he had remain in the shape he was in 1992 then he would have remained in the upper echelon of centers, take the 1992 Ewing he would evenly match Hakeem in the 1994 Finals and may have been the difference.
I no longer watch the NBA. Absolutely TERRIBLE these days. However, thank God for the Time Machine called CZcams. This was real basketball. And anything before it.
I love the physicality of this game. You have two physical teams going at it hard in the playoffs and not crying about any hard fouls, just playing strong. These were real men playing basketball back then not like these sissy athletes today crying for little touch fouls. Today's basketball will never be the same like this ever.
This kind of game in the 90s brought out the very best among players and teams. They must make do whatever defenses gave them or else they lose the game by slimmest of margins. Every possession is like winning a game unlike today where players just gave up when they missed shots or turn the ball over.
Mark Jackson towards the end of regulation and John Starks in OT showed how something as simple as removing handchecking made NBA scoring so much easier. Defenders weren't handicapped back then
To fair, the playground element hadn’t been accepted yet..hand checking only works for basic ball handler…these days you can loose a hand check defender with simple hesitation left to right crossover

NBA was at it's best when you had the right mix of this kind of physical no-nonsense play and flair players being able to express themselves. I hate to be cliche'd but today it's veered too far in the wrong direction and needs more of this type of play.
