I realize that no matter what I say here, words will fail me. There is simply no way to express the full measure of your very positive impact on my life, or how so very grateful I am to you. Very few on this planet have brought tears of joy out of so many as you have. No matter how bad it gets out here, the world is a much better place because of you. We throw out words like brilliant and genius, it's the best I can do, You are a thousand times more than that. God Bless You Pat Metheny.
Could not be said any better. I feel the same way....
The tribe....
I have one word: honesty. That is Metheny to me. Always true to his art and belief.
Hahaha. YES. Pat Metheny has me scrambling to find every possible adjective in the English language to describe his music and what it DOES TO MY SOUL. Sometimes there just aren't any words. And that's when you know you've stepped off the coils of mortality and slid into an obscure and immensely satisfying sense of immortality. And it's just ONE album!
Thank you Pat, Antonio, Gwilym, Linda, Luis, the Orchestra.......My Soul is happy and in Peace now ! I will always be ..... coming with you !
Every time a Metheny album came out, I'd fall in love with it and never want Pat to do anything else but continue with the themes of that work in his next album. I'm so glad he never did. He entertained me, but he also educated me. I am forever in his debt. He is a singular, global treasure.
Truth....and this included Lyle.....
I challenge anyone to turn up volume on this song all the way after the eight minute mark to not feel the anger and the power awakened. There’s so much going on it’s beyond words.
Chills
No shit, like Wagner!
How does he do that? Genius doesn't begin to describe it.
The use of the approaching train, building through the signal bell to the “beat-drop” of the train whistle at 11:18 is nothing short of brilliant. This whole piece exemplifies that rare Metheny-type combination of originality and depth. Pat is a national treasure.
truth!!!!!!!
He is indeed.
My older brother turned me onto PMG when I was 15 years old; he bought the white PMG album then took me to see them at Town Hall in NYC in 1980. That was the beginning of my love affair with Pat Metheny, and it’s been 40 years of seeing him everywhere I lived: NY, Boston, and now northern California. Pat’s guitar playing and songwriting just keeps getting better and better. I love the comments about his music being a soundtrack to life .... very true. Very sadly, I lost my brother suddenly and way too soon in 2009, however I feel his spirit with me in all the music he loved, but most especially when I listen to Pat or see him live. And my oldest nephew loves Pat as much as his father did. Long may he play. 🎸❤️
Witnessing...
Gail Weisman , your bro was a great man.
my first bf took m eto see him in 1981 in UTRECHT netherlands, right after Offramp came out...love affair since !
L van der Valk Were you at the The Way Up performance at the Vredeburg on 8th June 2005? I wept at end, it was so beautiful.
@@Pluggit1953 ohhh YES i was, 2 nights in a row !!! fantastic !!
I m French saxophonist since 40 years and i listen Pat for very long time. This music is magical. Pat propose us to travel to come back at essential the happiness of life.
I just cannot imagine having to go through life without his music. Just unreal how he can go different places in the world of music but still have his own signature. A couple of years ago, my TV was on , on the Stingray Jazz station and I heard a piece of music from a musician unknown to me; Marc Johnson. I turned around and looked at the artist name and title of the piece and said: that can’t be, this has to be Pat. Indeed it was.... Sound of Summer running is that album. Bought recently. Turned out Johnson is the basist. Good album. Do not regret getting it. Anyway... Pat, thanks for a lifetime of lifechanging music. You’re it. Long life.
Great album, with Bill Frisell and Joey Baron. Bought it when it came out, and it has given me 24 years of pleasure. May you enjoy many happy years in its company too!
We saw Pat live in a classic old downtown Sacramento theater last year, a sincere religious experience I will cherish in memory.
The jazz, the classical elements, the musical ambient, all Is magic
Truth....
Been a fan since 1980. Pat never lets me down, RIP Lyle Mays.
All music on Pat is a new beginning
FINALLY...Metheny is BACK! To remind us what pure inspired genius sounds like!!
If there's a soundtrack for the human spirit breaking its chains and soaring, this is most certainly it. Pat does it again.
Lyle è più che mai presente e dall'alto controlla e suggerisce. Meraviglioso!
We are listening to a man who has completely mastered his craft. Incredible musician.
A Pat Metheny recording is like opening up your favorite Christmas present over and over. With the same amount of glee and anticipation.
This through quality headphones, chilled bourbon and a comfortable chair... perfection.
Pat's been the future of Jazz now for 45+ years. Still pushing the envelope into outer space.

His spirt sure is from other spaces
The best concert I've ever attended, in my entire life, was a very small show Pat and Lyle gave with the rest of the Pat Metheny Group in maybe 1991 or 1992 in the cafeteria at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. No special lights, no stage (small riser), no crowd (maybe 300 people), low ceiling tiles, ceramic tile floor ... the absolute worst place you could ever perform music. PM and LM and the rest simply blew us away. They played for themselves and we few who attended were just lucky to be there to witness it. I've seen some amazing live shows since, but that was unrivaled for me.
I went to one of his concerts back in 97 and it was at the Universal in Burbank, just me and moms and that was the absolute best!!!!!!
and the Ranch Bowl - small venue got some startling talent to play there. Standing within 20 ft of the Yellow Jackets.
How I wish I was there!
WOW! I was driving and listening to this... and at the 11:18 mark in this song I thought I was going to have to pull over. The chills were running up and down my spine.... it's been so long since I've heard music affect me so much! So wonderful...epic... and we really need Pat to continue. He's one of the few that's blazing trails forward...
in Pat this crescendo and exposure of sound is frequent
This is more than music, this is a message.
I felt like this too.Darkness emerging from the brilliant colors of the first part
Yes
So glad to see a new release. Like Jean Luc Ponty and Keith Jarrett, PM takes us places others don't ... can't.
That`s right, but others can take you to other places where PM can`t /// It is so simple /// I like PM but there are many others too.. ♪♫☼
I'm hearing 45 yrs of listening to Pat here. AMAZING!!
As a teen when I first heard PMG, I would listen to the album from beginning to end.Today, as an older gentleman, my end to end listening is typically on long transatlantic plane trips. There's absolutely no better music for me to listen to than PM 'cuz it totally transports you through a journey.
A national treasure and living legend.
i agree totally.
Greetings from Paso de Los Libres, Corrientes, 🇦🇷ARGENTINA 🇦🇷 Your music change my life!!
Esa!!!
Lo vamos a tener de vuelta por nuestro país de nuevo!!!
It has been a great music run with Pat for me since 1979... Pat will always BE!
Thanks Pat, for doing this to all of us who love your work. Never stop finding new roads.
what the actual heck, started as a jazz jam, ended with an epic orchestral climax. how fantastic this is.
Why 183 thumbs down? Something this beautiful doesnt come with a free car or lottery ticket.
Simply stunning.......Since bright sized life.......along for the most GLORIOUS of rides.....still riding at 70
You have accompanied my life since 1982. Thank you for 37 inspiring years.
Genau, Christian. Gleich fur mich seit 1981 -- meine college years. My then significant other turned me on to Metheny. The very first time I heard him it was LIVE when boyfriend got us tickets to a Metheny Group concert. It took only minutes for me to be hooked for life. Thank you, SKB, for the tix & the lifetime gift of introducing me to this timeless music.

A Thousands Thanks to You, Pat ….. You have outdone yourself yet again!! Another Grammy is guaranteed!
This is epic. "It's for you" was always one of my favourite pieces of music but this track is going to make me buy this album. Pat is the best guitarist in the world and one of the best musicians in general.
Those sirens are so foretelling. I get the shivers every time.
Pat Metheny in South America. March MMXX.
Pat Metheny is an American Treasure shared with the world. Keep making beautiful music, sir. I'll keep buying.
Pat's wonderful solo! He's learned to hide and seek in the mix, quietly thinking. The music brings you on an ethereal journey, deep joy and sadness.
One of the best jazz guitarists at the moment.
Glad to have seen him live.
at the moment? this guy is on top level since over forty years.
Pat is back to save us all from mainstream music. Bless you Pat. Finally the beauty of music is back..
To give us our hope back.
What a song!! Pat Metheny is a force of nature.
Damn, this is fantastic... this feels like the glory days of complex Pat Metheny Group compositions are back. I first saw PMG on the American Garage tour in 1979. This sounds epic, can't wait for the rest of it.
Thank you, Pat. For never resting or repeating, really.
He is a restless musical soul as is Bruce Hornsby. Would be nice if they would do a project and see what comes out.
At last, an album from the lineup that includes Gwilym Simcock, my favourite British pianist. And fresh material too.
Yes, he really gets to stretch out on this track but the interplay with the whole band is amazing. You can tell they had played a lot of gigs before going into the studio. Gwilym is doing some stuff with Acoustic Triangle next year. Cannot wait.
Pat.. You make it. As we wish.. For a long time.
Love Pat's music - the "White " album/CD with "San Lorenzo" , "Phase Dance" and "April Joy" on it is still one of my favorites ! One of the best live concerts I've ever attended was
at the "Bayou" in Georgetown back in tha day !
How lucky we are to have a musician of this talent among us. It is so good to be able to enjoy it. Congratulations Pat excellent new album
The last minute harks back to the album and piece that let me discovery Metheny decades ago, "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls". I knew I was listening to genius then, and that quality is still present. This new piece also has a certain epic drive in last three minutes that is magnificent.
So. Beautiful. The cinematic finish is just breath taking. I have been a fan since 2009.
Secret Story .....1992.....
I would love it if Pat and Lyle Mays could compose one more project before both of them end their playing/composing days. Pat has said he is swinging for the fences and he certainly feels the pressure of time now that he is 65 years old. They are both great talents individually, but something more than the sum when working in tandem.
Have pre-ordered the album.
guess its too late for that now
Unfortunately, Lyle Mays recently passed away...
I've been listening him since 1987.
Still have his Still Life Tour t-shirt but usually my Dad is wearing it when on holidays and people he meets reminds of those happy times.
Just speechless. Glad to be on Earth with him.
Truth....
For real!

Fully agree. Was lucky enough to catch the Unity Group tour twice, the two greatest performances I have seen yet.

...awesome track from Pat Metheny!...people listening from all over the world...one of the reasons that brought me to music to begin with...inclusive, no fence to go through...there are no walls keeping one out in music..I say right now, hello to the world!!...peace
First time I saw him live , it was in 1995 in london and still a big pleasure to hear him playing . Sanchez brought a lot to his music and I’m a big fun of Lyle mays
The euphoria expressed about this music is just a bit over the top. O save us Pat, please.
Now, after listening to Linda's music, I think I see why she was the perfect bassist for this album and, particulary, for this song.
One of the earliest memories of my life is being with my mother, in the kitchen of the house where I was raised, listening to "Last train home". Thirty years later, I'm still a devout follower. Looking forward to see Pat play live next march.
Your story is not alone I have one similar with my late mother
I have always wondered why some music can transcend time and memories you are living my dream of one day having the privilege to see and listen to one of the finest musicians of our generation.
Last train home hits me close too. Reminds me of some very happy moments in my life. Cheers everyone!
Amazing 💗
Great driving tune wanna drive off edge of universe into the stars
Still Life (Talking) is my favorite record from him
One of the best albums in a long time. I'm grateful for that.
Seattle misses (and loves) you Pat!
9:00 the train sounds are on point. I woke up to it this morning and it was just beautiful.
Holy crap this is fantastic! That crescendo stating at 10 minutes with the railroad sounds...
Pat likes trains,..bless from Ecuador 🏵️ and AZ 🌵
The unique sounds in the background take me back to the Pat and Lyle days. Extraordinary!
Been awhile I loved something so much I brought the album.
Thank you for creating this Mr. Metheny and band.
Absolutely beautiful. I have literally grown up with his music and I cannot imagine not having it along on this journey. Thank you Pat Metheny!!
Robert Nickens , Indeed. I can jus imagine what a nightmare it would have been to be born in another century. So lucky to be blessed with his music. :-)
@@jeanjcaron I suppose every century has its music and hace often wondered how come this music was never even inspired to be composed before now. Didn't anyone have imagination in the 17th century or did They all have to follow suit? Yes, we are extremely lucky!
Imagine this will be exciting to hear live, with Antonio organically creating the railroad crossing sounds on the drum kit, Pat palm-muting the approaching ominous chug of the trump train, and who will it be on trumpet to deliver that startling Doppler train horn! America Undefined and gone are our common values, what matters anymore? Pat matters! Can’t wait to hear more.
"trump train" ?
k l y t u s Pat states point blank that there is a political element to the work relating to results of the last election. The train, like the tornado on the album cover, presents an ominous tone, reflecting a tumultuous time in America. I see the train horn as a very loud warning of where we are headed if we keep standing on those tracks. These are not the feel-good sounds and metaphors of Last Train Home.
Trains and orchestras makes me think of Honegger Pacific 231. Orchestral score here very stylised ala Hollywood movie maybe because it is such an orchestra. To these ears, it's an attempt to compensate for the fact that Mays used synths for such orchestrations but that option is currently gone. His piano/synth combinations was such that piano solos rarely just sounded like solos or his comping just like comping. Current guy is much more conventional that way. Fine musician. Less distinctive. "just another jazz piano player". Less of a contribution, perhaps. Wonder if the sleeve of record will say "all composed by Metheny" or "composed by Metheny and the band"? Probably "composed by Metheny" and then in tiny print "arranged by the orchestra conductor". Steve Rodby is a good producer for albums featuring orchestra. Oregon in Moscow was one.
I’m still hoping and praying the group reunites but this sounds fabulous !
I cannot wait for Pat's new CD....America Undefined...he just redefined Jazz Fusion with his new CD..
Sounds really nice...listening to Pat for at least 40 plus years
Saw this line up twice and always wanted a new album by them.
Now we will have one.
Great track and roll on February.
A return to The secret story. Thrilling !
I may not have the chance to watch and listen to the live concerts of Pat Metheny and his group, but every time I listen to his CD collections which I have purchased and collected through the years, I become so motionless and my emotions are filled with absolute AWE!!! I'm from Manila, the Philippines but given the chance to watch him live and see him personally perform, will be a great honor for me.
Beautiful witness.....truth you speak brother from Manila....
Pat's from this place is destined to become another timeless classic. Wolfen
OH YES, YES! Pat's back! and I can still hear some classic Pat sound... reunited with Gil Goldstein orchestral arrangements!! Can't wait for the full album on February 2020!!
Gil Goldstein.....so on it.....
Sanchez is simply becoming a Jack DeJohnette Part 2 - he flows like a brook, turns, over some rocks, straight, hairpin curve, rapids......effortlessly....like watching and listening to Nature.
ohh, but Sanchez is more and more spectacular, De johnette is always down, yess,
And it's been 18 years now he'd played with Pat and the PMG ! After Lyle and Steve, he will become soon the next one who played the more years with him.
Words cannot describe my joy at hearing new material from the legend. I heard my first PMG (First Circle) in 1985 and literally not one day has gone by since then that i have not listened to Pat.
Good old Pat! Remembering at Secret Story, one of my all time favourites. Beautifull!!!!
I think this is the strongest Post-Lyle composition to date. Don't beat me up, but this strikes the same neurons in me.
Tom Pernal, I agree 100%. Pat and these fine musicians have struck the same neurons! :)
Yes sir. I think America Undefined especially bears the mark of Lyle Mays as if his spirit looms over the entire song. WOW. Talk about leaving a LEGACY. A musician of Pat Metheny's caliber STILL carries the Lyle Mays vibe even after he has left this earth. RIP Lyle. And thank you, Pat, for blessing us yet again with your transformational otherworldly music.
Reminds me in terms of 'The Way Up' - a free roaming landscape of sound with a deeply routed melodic pathway. I have no idea if this kind of musical creativity is possible by any other musician(s) than the Pat Metheny Band: I should imagine a high level of intuition and skill is needed. I will buy this, put it in the car on the loop and thousands of miles later I'll get it and go wow.
Pat, been addicted to your music since I was a freshman at BC in a dorm full of dudes blasting your music.40 years later here I am trying to convert my 12-year-old to the music!
It's about the moods that Pat sets . . .
How beautiful! Pat Metheny's comments on his approach to compose and record the music is very inspiring.
I know of no other artist whose sound is the spirit of what it’s actually like to have human consciousness. This is how my life awareness, sights and smells, people and places and thoughts would sound if someone were able to put them into music. Thank goodness for Pat
Truth....
Might I be so bold as to suggest Jacob Collier? e.g. In the Real Early Morning or She's Ocean Wide and Canyon Deep or the pure joy that is his cover of Here Comes the Sun. And I can't believe that after more than 3 decades of listening to Metheny, I finally get to a concert next March!
Have an amazing time. You’ll be able to appreciate it to its full having been such a long-time listener. Jacob Collier was the other name I had in my mind, though I’ve never looked into it I have the feeling however Collier has taken Metheny as his main influence in writing chord progressions. Like a kind of master-pupil relationship thing, it certainly sounds like it.
@@cooldebt nothing like it!!
Jacob Collier is brilliant. IMO, the first artist since Pat, that can paint that same visual landscape through his music. They both possess a higher level of consciousness.
powerful piece....the gradual approach of the tornado and the climax.....beautiful arrangement....
capeheartriz the train?
@@blisterfree...yes....I think that is the idea....those that witness these monsters say it sounds like an approaching train.....

This piece is illumination its inspiration ......its vertical!
Wow! Such great Pat Metheny album choices (and/ or PM Group selections, as referenced)!
I agree with the posters, particularly regarding the incomparable "Secret Story." It's definitely one of the most atmospheric and profoundly beautiful albums across all genres. I'd add the PM Group's "Offramp" (the timeless "Are You Going With Me?" And the yearning and heartfelt "James" ); the reverie-laden "Letter From Home," and Metheny's warm, intimate, solo guitar offering "One Quiet Night" from 2003. So many albums!! Pat Metheny truly has ser the bar high. Thank you and God bless!🎸🎶🎵🎼
The last 3 minutes of this piece is sheer bliss, an exercise in sonic ecstasy! Indeed one of the must have releases this year!
yeah~totally agree
Forever beautiful
People saying this has comparisons to Snarky Puppy... this is far better than anything Snarky Puppy could ever do, and I love Snarky Puppy.

W O W. IS IT FEBRUARY YET?!!
The Radiohead meets Thomas Newman ambience around 10:00 is fantastic. And then the climax into a Zeppelin-esque rock section is as amazing as it is unexpected.
Love Thomas Newman...his sound track for Best Exotic Marigold hotel really grabs me ...bless from Ecuador 🏵️
I have been a fan since Still Life Talking. He is my place of peace and creativity. A true legend!!
I recall recently Pat discussing the plan to make Wichita Falls II with Lyle at some point, and then he passed. Anyone else feeling that here? I'm speechless at the grandeur of this. Lyle must be nodding in full approval over the rainbow out there. Stunning.
Reminds me of his collaborations with Lyle Mays.
