    It's been a year since my original La Marzocco GS3 MP espresso machine review, and as I often do its time for an ownership update. So in this video I'll get into where I stand on all things with the machine, and if this countertop legacy has what it takes to maintain the top spot on my coffee bar.

    Professional barista with over 9 year GS3 ownership, used to change machine at home every other year, and since this machine I’ve never felt the need to change, which makes me happy. Two tips: if you plan to keep this, install it on the mains (both waste and water) with a water treatment. This way you never have to fill up the tank again. Second is use the steam wand at full throttle, this way you don’t have to use that hand on the switch since it locks in place at full throttle. Adjust steam pressure to your liking by changing the steam boiler temperature. (We used the have a foot pedal and a screw steam wand, that’s even better). Few maintenance things you can expect (at least on my old machine): blind filter with cafiza or other brand regularly, then o rings for the brew chamber and if you wish the shower screen too, every 6-12 months, anti vacuum valve every 24-36 months. Pump capacitor (just the relais or capacitor, it’s only a few bucks) every 5 years, water mix valve for tea every 5 years. All these things you can do yourself and I keep the most common spare parts in my drawer and change them around when they wear out. I’ve had one leak from the shower head fixed under warranty too (was the old design, they changed it to the new design). I have never had such a robust and friendly machine before, and hope this will outlast me like you state. Thanks for the review!

    Not directly related to this video, but perhaps this year you could do a deep dive on decaf? I consume caffeine, but also love espresso after dinner when caffeine just won’t do- I’m sure I’m not remotely unique in this regard- and really, really struggling to get tasty shots. Even from beans from roasters that I generally like

      Decaf is challenging but it’s gotten so much better than 5+ years ago where it used to taste like rat poison! Some of my fav decafs have come from El Paraiso (Diego Bermudez) and Wilton Benitez!

    I’ve owned the GS3MP for 3 years now - having it plumbed in with water and drain is a must - also, on your complaint about the paddle, this can be adjusted by a technician. I really love it and grew to love it even more after 3 years, I wouldn’t change it and would definitely buy it again, even with the new choices available on the market. I agree with you on the upgrades, although the Leva and Strada are amazing their price makes it prohibitive, so that GS3 will stay here for many many years

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  Před 7 měsíci +9

      I’ve had techs loosen the paddle a bit in the past, but they haven’t said they can spread the entire length of the track, I’ll follow up with my connected at Lm and confirm that.
      But in terms of plumbing, I think you’re missing the point. It’s not the fact that I have to fill a tank, it’s that it wastes a ton of water. Plumbing it only just gives you the illusion you’re not wasting a ton.

      @@Sprometheus while true, in the context of home use for 1-2 drinkers of coffee, it's really not that much water. Granted, I suppose that's up for interpretation depending on where you live. In Florida, water is not a scarce resource like it is out West.

    I got my GS3 MP in may 2019(4+ years ) with only 1 issue leak from the tank to the electric cercit board that got damaged but was fixed under warranty since then no issues what so ever and , I never turn it off unless I'm traveling something like 2 weeks in a year, I think its a machine that can last a life time with proper care every other year I'll change gasgates with maybe a little descaling since I'm using the BWT filter system no descaling build up so fare ...I will surely recommend this machine and thank you for the review :)

  • @byleew
    @byleew Před 7 měsíci +2

    I totally agree. I used to have an GS3 AV and I had annoyances too. Bypassed water would end up in the drip tray, I did not like the position of the water tank (impossible to see if it's almost empty because you first need to remove the drip tray) and the GS3 AV was not a very forgiving machine. Switched to a lever machine (Londinium) and love the simplicity of it, it just does what it should do. Currently using a Cafelat Robot and I just love it. The design of Cafelat is simple and effective. No time needed for heating up the machine in the morning. No need to use descaled water. No energy waste because of stand by time. It's easy to clean (no backflushing, no descaling needed) and that also means that your brewing water will clean every time you use it. The Cafelat gives me more manual control and profiling options than many other machine. It's just very easy to consistently brew good tasting shots.

    I have owned my GS3 MP since February 2022 and I love it. That said, I agree with almost everything you stated about your machine. The interface is not great, the manual adjustment paddle needs to be more precise and it is very well built. I have had no maintenance issues and the steam wand doesn’t really bother me. I like the Leva as you mentioned as well but I would but my GS3 all over again. It’s expensive but we’ll worth it.

    Agree with your thoughts on the GS/3 MP, Spro. Mine is sitting doing nothing now that I have the Sanremo You. I think it’s still an awesome machine (I’m not convinced Sanremo will update the You with any more frequency than LM does their machines) but spending 2 or 3 times as much to get functionality that comes in machines half the price from other companies feels a bit ridiculous. The thing about it is that you get lots of benefits from the GS/3 that just aren’t that applicable to a home use IMO.

    I have precisely that machine and side panels. I love it. As a black coffee drinker I basically use the steam wand to periodically purge it, not to steam milk. I have adapted to the MP lever (had it for just over a year too) and also agree that Italian software design sucks, but I have set my temps and don’t mess with them. I spent enough for it, it works great and plan on keeping it for awhile.

    I work in a very small coffee shop, where the GS3 is our only espresso machine and has been in use for 5 years.
    It has held up very well over the years and we’ve only had minor repairs done.
    I’ve never felt like the paddle for the steam wand was positioned in an always position and have enjoyed steaming milk with it, even though our machine does have a bit lot ‘lag’ when turning off the steam.

    I might be extremely lucky, but I‘ve never had any problem with the LM App in combination with my GS3 and ever since they made it possible to turn the steamboiler on and off when you‘re on the go, I couldn‘t be happier!
    Though that raises the question why this wasn‘t a feature from the start…
    I think it’s hard to find a machine that really compares to or outshines the GS3 MP as a whole package, as it just does everything you‘d want it to by simply bruteforcing it!
    All that while being so overbuilt, it might just outlive every other Home Appliance by decades 😄
    No need for fancy tech and huge touchscreens…

    I have owned my GS3MP for going on four years. Like you there are some nitpicks that are aggravating. I agree the steam wand setup is awkward. The only parts that I have had to replace is a steam kit. The controller is limpy. I am plumbed in so I don't have to deal with the water tray. The APP is useless but fortunately I don't need to use it often. I have a 5 gallon bucket that collects the drain water and I have to empty it about once a month. The pad on the front panel is outdated. It took four years to break in to the point that using the paddle was smooth and easy to control. I owned two Speedster before the GS3MP and there was always something failing on them. The GS3MP is a workhorse and what hits the cup is consistently excellent. I get bored with equipment but apprehensive about changing for fear I wouldn't like it as well as I do the LM. However I would like to test the Synesso ES1 but my intuition is telling me that refinements are needed before buying one.

    MP owner here. I have the machine since shortly after the switch to the conical valve. So far, it didn't let me down and required only marginal maintenance. The only thing that annoyed me was the vacuum breaker valves which need to be replaced about every other year. Let's hope that the waaaayyy more expensive new version also lasts longer. I've spoken to some caterers using the GS for their service which pulled thousands of shots. They were also happy with the reliability of the GS 3.
    Re. the quirks: I get along with the steam valve just fine but whoever programmed the UI of the panel must have had a few too many Ramazotti.
    One thing to mention in addition: if you use the water tank, make sure to open and completely clean it regularly, otherwise mold builds up along the edges. I leave the lid unscrewed for faster access.
    On the costs: yes, they are very expensive but given that a new machine now costs way more than it did when I bought it six years ago, my resale value is still decent.

    Thanks so much for your review and I can’t agree more! I have had my gs3 mp for 3 months and been using it to extract medium-light beans with 15 secs of pre-infusion for each shot which causes even a lot more water waste, plumbing in is definitely not a solution it just makes the waste invisible…

  • @kdraggy86
    @kdraggy86 Před 7 měsíci +1

    Love my GS3 MP. If you don't plumb it, you'll always complain about the water usage. Plumbed, and it's a non-issue. My only wish is that it didn't take so long to warm up. Was hopeful about the GS1, but the UI panel is 10 years out of date -- it's a $5K machine priced $4k too high. And ya, let's get a decaf video!

    I love mine ... but I love it a lot more since plumbing it in. I love the tactile connection to my cup, and honestly the "Decent experience" (and those like it) seems cool to play with, but kind of sterile for my morning ritual and afternoon escape. I'd really enjoy going over to a friend's house to play with one once in a while ... but only once in a while. Without a major re-understanding of what espresso is/how it's made that would render the GS3/MP severely obsolete, I plan to use it the rest of my life.

    I have had three LM machines. A GS3 MP AV & linea mini. The app I think is brilliant. I have never had any issues. If they don’t update the GS3 then other companies will steal the market. Fro example. The Unicapro blows it out the park. I want to buy a strada EP1 but they no longer make it.
    A GS3 EP with gear pump and new designed buttons / screen like the Leva would make it the best top end espresso machine on the market.

    I had a GS3 MP and I switched to a Slayer. I found the paddle finicky such that it was difficult to be consistent from shot to shot. I was also not a fan of the wasted water. I have not regretted my decision. I also have a Strietman CT2 that I really enjoy.

  • @Jahloveipraise

    Great honest feedback as always. One other thing to touch on with the water waste. If you’re using specialty water like third wave. That water waste adds up quickly at like up to 20 cents per shot just on water. I which yea may not seem like a lot but if you drink 2 shots per day that’s about 100 bucks per year or so. Given if you have a GS3 there’s a good chance that doesn’t make or break things lol

  • @MuhanadOmar

    Insightful and very honest video. I’ve always admired the GS3 but the price was always too high to justify. If I were single, I likely would’ve bought a LMLM but when there are other people using it that don’t want to fuss with a paddle or scale, automation becomes just as important as coffee quality. That’s what made the Sanremo YOU an easy choice and a best-of-both-worlds, especially for the early retail price of $4.2k USD.
    Last thing: I fully agree with your comment about the design, functionality, and stability of companion apps. It’s a sore spot for otherwise great machines and always feels like an afterthought

  • @GadgetsGearCoffee
    @GadgetsGearCoffee Před 7 měsíci

    Very valid points made, maybe they're investing more energy in their commercial products and have over simplified things for their consumer but then I don't get why they don't have the budget or priority to make sure the products they have out now work well especially if it's an app where it's a software upgrade that doesn't require hardware updates as it's on the phone... They aren't released a brand new product yearly either and the rotation of their products are slow. I like the way the machines look and they seem consistent but that's not a good enough reason to shell out thousands of dollars and be disappointed.

    Hello Sprometheus,
    I agree that once you have a La Marzocco GS3 you probably don’t need to think about the next machine (ever) .. they should last you a lifetime because they are built by a company with expensive parts that have been proven to be very reliable in a commercial enviroment.. a consumer will expect nothing less (considering the pricetag of the machine..
    I own a Linea mini and my experiences with the app are fine (very easy to use ,adjust temperature, change prebrewing, using auto on/off etc) much more convient than fiddling with the buttons on the GS3 but YMMV..
    La Marzocco should make sure the platform is stable and working for many many years (anything else would be unacceptable but I kept my old unconnected motherboard just in case)…
    When looking for these type of high end machines it all comes to personal preference..
    Don’t forget to enjoy your coffee

    We've got a GB5 S and a Linea Classic in a commercial setting and although we got a very good deal on the GB5, I sometimes wonder whether it was a poor choice. The very basic Pro app (similar issues to the home app by the sound of it), generally poor UI for compared to the competition for any kind of adjustment, and some mediocre design choices for the times we live in (very poorly insulated boilers for example) have me exploring options from other manufacturers more than I probably should.

    Spro, I’m wondering if you’ve ever had the chance to use a Linea Mini with the EMP mod (done by Coffee Machinist Rick Bond)?
    It doesn’t suffer from your two core complaints about the GS3’s paddle/pressure - ie. the water waste and the narrow level of control.

    The GS3 is a great machine (I have an AV plumbed in) but the screen interface could not be worse. I've had to replace the screen twice because the lettering broke up so badly, it was illegible. The LaMarzocco rep (London) suggested it was heat dissipation so we made some adjustments to the tray venting but the screen is starting to break up again after a year. Be interested to see what your long term experience is because the rep did a good line in 'this has never happened before'...

    That amount of water wastage is absurd - not just from a 'refilling the water tank' perspective, but if pulling a couple of shots a day is half a litre of water going down the drain (not including what actually goes into the espresso) that doesn't sit all that well with me.

    Amazing review. Candid and accurate. My least favorite part of the GS3 is the user interface. From that odd oval to the hieroglyphic markings on the square buttons, it looks hideous and antiquated, circa 1980s. The GS3 is not a bad looking machine but the user interface makes it an ugly duckling. I'd rather have a Linea Mini, but then again that paddle is like scratching on a chalkboard. Make the paddle a real flow control paddle, not an on/off switch. In 2024, I would love for you to review the Ascaso Baby T Plus, brought into the 21st century with thermoblock technology. I hate the plastic water reservoirs but you can't win them all. Still, for me, the simplicity of the Olympia Cremina reigns supreme.

Yes the gs3 is sexier but the R9 just outperforms it in every level of extracting and repeating espresso recipes. Having some experience with Italian cars, I was prepared to accept that my Linea Mini, and especially the LM app, would do strange things quite often. Having to replace a valve two weeks after purchase didn't surprise me. Not being able to connect through the app in more than every tenth attempt likewise. Not knowing that it will work the next time I want to brew a shot is part of the Italian experience. I once owned a Japanese car and it started every time I got in it. Nowadays it seems like they are the “marketing” version of themselves with little real respect for their core principles and values that made them successful and this is now entrenched in their current relationship with customers and it shows in the products.

    GS3 motherboard box is of poor design, uses self tapping screws that go into plastic, everything in it is packed way too tight. The ribbon cables degrade over time. The display started having missing pixels after 1 year. The plastic of the dump tray cracked and degraded within 2 years. The plastic back cover on the display disintegrated. Replacing the solenoid valve for the tea spout requires finger acrobatics that are just ridiculous. Too many issues that point to poor design and engineering.
