7 phera compulsory for marriage? Legal rituals for Hindu Marriage

So is it compulsory to take 7 pheras to get legally married as Hindus in India? What if you get the marriage registered but you fail to follow your rituals and customs? So, keep in mind that it will not be a valid marriage as per the provisions of Hindu marriage act.
But
You can always take recourse to the Special Marriage Act if you don’t want to follow the rituals and ceremonies.
