You can see the pain and emotion in his eyes as he sings this. I read the Wikipedia article about his album "In the Lonely Hour" and it was so sad to read that the songs on it came from true feelings he had. Apparently he had been in love with a man that didn't love him back, and he was constantly sad and lonely--and still sometimes feels lonely today. It's so sad to hear that such an amazing man had to go through that. :( I hope he becomes happier. He is an amazing singer and a phenomenal songwriter.

I distinctly remember seeing this live on SNL. I usually always tune out the performers and use that time to get food or go to the bathroom, but the moment he opened his mouth my eyes SNAPPED to the television, mouth just agape. I couldn't believe the sounds coming out of his mouth. I knew he'd be a big deal, and I'm so glad to see him enjoying the success he is.
I was at a buddy's house and snl was on in the background and this voice just immediately pierced the room. It was moving and I'll always remember it.

His voice is so powerful, but it has a shyness in it, which it's so weird but at the same time magnificent. The combination is so perfect, I don't think anyone else can do it justice beside him. When the song ended he stepped back with a shy smile on his face and the eyes like a little kid getting praised for something of which he is too modest to think any higher of himself (did that make sense?). He looked so cute, it makes me wanna give him a big hug

He's such a talent, and you can see how much he pours himself into his music, then immediately he steps away from the mic at the end of the song, and shyly smiles. It's like he's in his little bubble by day, and when he gets so engulfed in his music, he goes to a different world or something. That's beautiful. While in Britain it is mainly focused on your vocals and your ability to write music. Now here i am expecting a child and the mother threatens to take it away from me. I am a married man over 50 yrs of age with 3 teenage daughters and it's taken me about six months to write this post... Which is my first one! I first heard of Sam Smith when I saw his performance on SNL and when he sang "lay me down" i could not stop crying, partly because it bought back memories of my brother who passed away from cancer in a hospice centre some 7 yrs before and the thought of laying there beside him while he lay in bed sedated and about to pass. It also made me cry because of its sheer artistry.
My wife and children could not understand why there were so many tears, and I could not explain it to them, so I simply took my IPad, headphones and listened to it over and over on my own.....I have probably cried along to that song a hundred times since and am no longer afraid fo have others see it. Sam Smith is a unique talent and I hope he continues to bring the same emotion to his performances for many years to come..

listening to this brings back so many memories. Struggled a lot with mental illness as a young teenager/child and was in and out of Psych wards, this song resinates with me so much but in a different way. Each night my mother would fall asleep on the uncomfortable fold out hospital bed, she did this for weeks... until they told us she would have to stay in a seperate part of the hospital (For parents to sleep for children who are in for more than a month). That was the first night i slept without her in the room with me and it was the hardest moment in my entire life.

Some fix their sound more than others, but that does not take away their talent.The same happens with photography and photoshop. In the end they just want to deliver the highest quality possible, but to believe that an artist does not edit their voice is quiet naive frankly.

Who are the 77 people that had the audacity to dislike this performance. There aren't many people out there nowadays that have this type of raw emotion and such a soulful voice. This young man has a God given gift. His voice gives me chills and I don't say that often about an artist.

There are many different ways to hear a song. This made me think about caring for my beautiful mom while cancer slowly took her away. Maybe it's the words...maybe it's the aching pain in his voice. All I know is that it's beautiful. And made me cry.

Thank you, Rozalia. (What a beautiful name!) I just wish people would realize that music touches people in different ways for different reasons. It's about MUSIC. Doesn't matter how they look or their personal preferences... it's about what you HEAR. So many performers today have to try to be flashy & outrageous - which can make for a good show live. But once the show is over...for me, it's about How Was The Music. I've seen lots of concerts over the years but one of my favorites was seeing Eric Clapton. It was just him & his guitar, nothing else on stage. I was just a teenager but thought then that this will be the best show I will ever see. And I was right. If you have a true talent for singing..you don't need all that other stuff. Let your voice be your talent. :)

Wow! His voice is so mesmerizing!.. Also, even if he is gay though, what better does that make us to judge him? All sins are the same, one sin is not worse than another. Just because we don't support homosexuality, doesn't mean that we should hate him. We should love everyone as Jesus loved us. It is not our place to judge others. But God's.
