  • Fall asleep or meditate to the sound of Japanese flute for a deep relaxed sleep or meditate to eliminate the stress of everyday life. Zen meditation is a long-standing Buddhist tradition that dates all the way back to China's Tang Dynasty in the seventh century. It spread from China to Korea, Japan, and other Asian countries, where it continues to thrive. Zen is a Japanese term derived from the Chinese term Ch'an, which is itself a translation of the Indian term dhyana, which means concentration or meditation.
Zen meditation is a traditional Buddhist discipline that is suitable for both novice and experienced meditators. Zen meditation has numerous benefits, one of which is that it provides insight into how the mind works. As with other forms of Buddhist meditation, Zen practise can benefit individuals in a variety of ways, including by equipping them with tools for coping with depression and anxiety. The ultimate goal is spiritual, as Zen meditation reveals the mind's inherent clarity and workability. In Zen, awakening is defined as encountering the original nature of mind.
Meditation, according to Zen Buddhism, entails observing and letting go of the thoughts and feelings that arise in the mindstream, as well as developing insight into the nature of the body and mind. Unlike many popular forms of meditation, Zen meditation delves much deeper. Zen addresses fundamental issues and general life questions that frequently appear unanswerable, and it does so through practise and intuition rather than through study and logic. Zen/Ch'an was eloquently described by the great Buddhist master Bodhidharma as "a special transmission apart from the teachings; not founded on words and letters; pointing directly to the human heartmind; seeing nature and becoming a Buddha."
All Zen schools practise zazen, a sitting meditation in which the practitioner sits upright and observes the breath, particularly the movement of the breath within the belly. Certain schools of Zen also employ koans, a type of spiritual riddle presented to students by a Zen meditation master in order to assist them in transcending their rational limitations and gaining a glimpse of the truth beyond rationality. "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" is a well-known koan. Historically, this practise has necessitated a supportive relationship between a genuine Zen master and a genuine Zen student.
Rather than offering temporary solutions to life's difficulties, Zen and other forms of Buddhist meditation focus on resolving fundamental issues. The practise identifies the true source of our unhappiness and dissatisfaction and redirects our attention in a way that fosters true understanding.
The true source of happiness and well-being is not wealth or celebrity - it is found within each of us. As with all other genuine spiritual paths, Buddhism teaches that the more you give, the more you receive. Additionally, it fosters an awareness of interconnectedness and appreciation for all of life's small gifts, all of which are contained within this present moment. As our concern and compassion for others grows, so does our personal fulfilment. As a Zen master might say, seeking inner peace is impossible; however, giving up the idea of such a reward in and of itself - and focusing instead on the happiness of others - creates the possibility of lasting peace. This is, without a doubt, Zen's spiritual dimension.
On a daily basis, Zen teaches the mind to be calm. Additionally, meditators are able to reflect more clearly and creatively. Another benefit is improved physical health: people who practise zazen report lower blood pressure, decreased anxiety and stress, stronger immune systems, and more restorative sleep, among other benefits.
