- I built this for a friend - a short clip about the secrets of my garden shed, which is of course not the Ivory Tower of instrument making. You are hearing the first test playing on this particular instrument. UPDATE 2019: Thanks for all the feedback, folks. Please bear in mind that this is really just a cheap DIY solution, it doesn't come anywhere close to professional instrument making!
I know video pretty old,but anyone asking, you can find dimensions similar for Shetland gue, joukkiho on google,PDF layout, Michael j king done a lot about ancient instruments on them.
You can use nylon classical guitar strings, violin or cello strings.but guitar strings must durable work best with guitar tuners IMO,all work with a violin bow, GBE guitar strings work or just GB the lower or thinner ones work best because there similar thickness of violin strings, but I'm sure for deeper tone you could use EAD,(top 3) even steel but because they are wound spring like texture bit more friction on bow but you need rosin,(like oil for strings)
You can make these like thick plank of wood size, just have drill and jigsaw and guitar/violin know how
Hope this helps,currently building one
By no standards am I expert, just trying to help :)
Thanks!
I have another question. How do you make the bow? Do I necessarily have to use horsehair?
Hope you see it ♥️♥️
@Nicolás Cardozo you pretty much have to use horse hair for the bow because of the abrasive and tough nature of it I think they make “vegan bow hair” that’s artificial but idk how good it is
Holy crap that sounds really good
I saw your comment and waited in anticipation... holy crap it sounds harsh. I was expecting like, the mellowness and nice sound of a Morin Khuur or Nikon B. tagelharpa
hello everyone, thanks for the comments - I plan to revive my channel and to upload a much more sophisticated video of a much more sophisticated instrument soon ;)
Hi Johann, have you ever considered building the talharpa on order and selling it for example on Etsy? I am pretty sure you would find customers! I would love to have a 2-string talharpa like this - the sound is unbeatable! :-)
The fact you consider this abomination a musical instrument sets a very low bar for your future projects. Even my first Tagelharpa when I was a child was vastly superior in every way to this. There is NO excuse for this level of lazy, shoddy, and inept workmanship.
@@dr.lexwinter8604 Hi, thanks for your feedback. Please read the video description.
@@MartinVlkMrnous Hi Vik, no I am not selling anything. This was just a fun project with the intention to see what a box with fishing line on it would sound like ;)
@@AntoniusVladislavius Thanks for your reply! And by the way, don't get discouraged by the other commenter - you know what they say - haters gonna hate. I think your talharpa is awesome. :)
This is great, there's also something powerful about the song you're playing
Can anyone help me out with dimensions? Width length and thickness of the various parts. The length of the resonating chamber especially. Please and thank you.
Could you tell us the main measures of your harpa? Like the distance between tuning pegs and bridge, and overall length
Hey I saw your video of you playing the black sails theme song on the Hurdy Gurdy
Thank you so much for this new to me blueprint. I can't wait to start wailing on one of these.
man.. i really love the sound of your jouhikko. It's clear and sharp, so i guess i'll try using those nylon strings as well.
So awesome! Gotta make me one now
Does it really have to be nylon fishing line for the string or I can use normal acoustic guitar nylon strings?
This is amazing! :O I am defenitly going to build one now. A few questions though: I assume the strings have different gauges? And does the bow use the same string or is that an actuall horsehair bow? also: are both sides of the soundbox shut off with a piece of beech wood? You would help me a great deal by answering these questions! :)
use dental floss to make bow strings, 8 wires will be enough., My 2 strings tagelharpa use 0,6mm(F-tuned) and 0,8mm(C-tuned) fishing lines, you have to put violin resin in both of them!
@@eduardocyphrak4448 What do you intend by putting violin resin in?
What can we do in lieu of the forest wood for the tailpiece?
I'm a bronze and gypsum sculptor lady but I never have work with tree materials... (I think that maybe i can do this, I hope så ) I would like to play in this instrument Hedningarnas songs "Räven" "Drafur och Gildur"...etc. etc. Thank you för your sharing your amazing knowledge. Är du svensk? 🌻 Love from Sweden 💛💙
@@reynalindstrom2496 Jag är inte från Sverige, men jag kan svenska, ja :) Jag är övertygad om att du klarar det!
Hello! men, id love if you put the measures! Thanks your work is awesome!
Where can i buy spruce or beach wood in fort Wayne IN usa
is the bridge also glued? or is she held by the strings?
hiya i just love the sound of this instrument and for year i listen to hedningarna and bands like that so im trying to make my own.
i have a few question how deep need to be the box? what kind of strings and wich ones? and the bow string is made from what?thabnk you so much for the video cheers :)
Sorry to necro this post bro, but I just checked out the band because of this comment. Good shout, wicked band.
Did u put a sound post? If so how did you do it? Cheers!
how about the bow , what can i use or can i built it , please let me know
Please help me! Sadly, the string leg (bridge) is cracked along its lenght on my own tagelharpa. ☹️ Can you help me where I can order spare parts (new bridge)? I don't know anyone who can make them. ☹️
@Johánn Hrímland What diameter fishing string did you use for this? I mostly make plucked lyres so usually have various string diameters in stock , lobe to give this a go on my 2 string Jouhikko or Dheltand Gue, Sounds like a great alternative to Horsehair for beginners or for playing outdoors, I have tried Guts strings that work well, Thomastik Violn strings which are ok, but a little metallic and the white and black horsehair(videos on my youtube channel, see bowed lyres and Shetland Gue)
Michael J King obv not op but I would imagine he just used fishing line the same gauge as instrument strings, since they’re measured by their diameter I would imagine you could just pick some that “sound right”
Hm. I'm guessing this can easily be adapted to make a 3, or 4 stringed Taglharpa...
I wonder if a similar work-progress could create a kravikr lyra....
I've had a Jouhikko for quite some time now, but the horsehair strings really bug me. I constantly need to tune them, and are really hard to play on. I see that you are suggest using nylon fishing lines, but how do you use them? Plain and simple one string, or twisted with several strands? Do you do anything to the nylon for the bow to get a grip? And do you need to tune them all the time? :D
Awesome video though! Keep up the good work!
+Morten Helgeland Hello and thanks. Yes, I suggest nylon fishing lines - you just string them up and they work (with some re-tuning), just like nylon acoustic guitar strings, without twisting or anything. Of course you need to wax the bow with violin resin, and the strings gain better grip when they are themselves a bit coarse through the resin, but still nylon is the simple solution.
+Johánn Hrímland wich diameter the lines have to be
And do you think it's also good or better to use violin ou guitar string ? Thanks !
Graine de Rebelle guitar strings might not be the best option because youll need to play with a bow
Hola, muy buen trabajo, te cuento que fabrique un jouhikko, pero no se como son las cuerdas i su afinación, me podrías ayudar con eso? Te lo agradecería eternamente...
Hello, very good work, I tell you to make a jouhikko, but I do not know how the strings are and their tuning, could you help me with that? I would thank you forever ...
Is there a hole in the back or did you close??
BRO THANKS! This was AWESOME!
Hi! I love video; pretty easy to comprehend and much cheaper lol. But I have a question: I saw in another comment that the gauges for the string are .11mm and .07mm for the high string, but which one is manipulated by the finger (the one that goes next to the hand)? I know nothing about instrument making so I just want to make sure. Thanks!
Actually both are used. You can choose the string any time, it will give different sounds. Begin first with the light and then try both during a song
Nathanaël Boulot Oh? I didn't know that. I thought the second string was purely a drone string...well, thanks for that clarification, I really needed it :D
edit: does this apply to 3 or 4 string jouhikkkos?
Camila O yes
excellent work! what is the tuning of the chords? also did you put a back cover or it is open at the back?
It's A A E. Yes, the back is closed.
Is it only Nylon Fishing string i should use ? or is there other options ?
I LOVE IT!
How did you get yours to sound so good? I built a 3 string version, but can't get it to make notes half the time even when im doing open strings. I'm using the same bow I use for my viola & definitely have enough rosin on it. Do you have to "break in" the nylon strings for them to sound good?
Ik its late awnser, its how youve coiled the strings on tuner, make sure there enough wobble room on the bridge,so strings aren't too tight, and rosin
I may try making something like this, I don't have many wood working tools, is the sound box necessary or were they traditionally made from a single piece of wood?
okay this is epic definitely will attempt when quarantine is over, but what is that song called, ive been repeating the video all night just to listen to it
just my improvisation
@@AntoniusVladislavius i absolutely love it man its really amazing legit has been on loop since 4 am yesterday thank you for this
@@Gawkie thanks ;) you might want to check my channel, I have a music project called Shores of Pangea where I play tagelharpa
And the diameter of the desired string? what talharpa 4 string and 2 strings. And is it possible to make a bow out of nylon? if Yes,then tell me the diameter of the line.
I love this ! Thanks !
How long and thick are the three pieces of sprue wood? Im interested in building my own tagelharpa but dont know how thick to make it.
Sound amazing. Great job. I have see lot of Crwth who didn't sound good.
Can you tell us more about the size of the instrument ?
Impressive sound :O
Did you play the Sound of this Video with the Talharpe you made?
EDIT: Do you still have in mind what the measures are?
Yes, I did ;) I never had measures, I just built it spontaneously.
@@AntoniusVladislavius Thanks for your response :)
How long did it take? especially with the glue to get dry. Wanna make a weekend project with my boys :)
can I make it all from maple? also what thickness did you used for the beech wood and spruce? and what gauges are those nylon strings? I was thinking of violin strings maybe.... how did you made the bow?
Cool
i made one my self but when i touch the nailon stings with my fingers the sound stops why ????
Romanos Romanos you have to press them the right amount, too much or too little and it won't work. Just experiment until it works
it doesn't have a back?
Did you put a Bass bar and a Sound post inside ? I'm planning to build one but the more I look for plans and blueprints I see that the inside is a little bit more complicated than just making a box...
I'm working on one now. Definitely putting in a sound post, bass bar undecided yet. Almost to that stage. Unfortunately I need to know exactly where the bridge sits beforehand to accomplish these.
Great sounding tagelharpe! Are there any other wood sorts you can use instead of beech wood?
Spruce is probably the best for the top piece (normally refereed to as a the soundboard) and it more readily available online as its used to guitars and violins.
Hello, Johann! Thank you for the great video. I'd like to know, however, what the dimensions of the instrument are, if you don't mind my asking.
Great sound man!!! :-O
Sounds great! I was wondering what type of strings you used, could you perhaps share a little bit of your stringing experience ? :) Thanks!
Did you drill the holes into the beech wood?
How much of that beech wood do I need? :S I mean how big is that board?
spectacular work, what measurements did you use on the box?
if you have how to share the measures used would be great.

Did you make your bow as well?
How did you make the bow
Buy a bow
Hi! Nice jouhikko!! What is the gauge of your string? And your tunning?
Uh thanks! 💙
This is awesoooome! What are the measurements? Wanna try my hand at makin one of my own
Hello, which color of glaze did u used?
hey, my taghelharpa does not give any sound, I used horse hair for the strings.. any advice?
Ringeistvonmordor Use resin on the bow hairs ;)
Where did you buy that beech wood piece? Is that a plywood?
yes, plywood
what is the bow string made from
Very nice! Is the sound directly from this tagelharpa?
CloudedPeach yes, the video in the end shows the first test run.
Just lovely!
what stain color did you use?
what kind of nylon stings u using? can u give me tips on making 3 sting jouhikko on the types of nylon sting to use?
use 0,60mm 0,80mm and 1,0mm and 8 wires of dental floss to make the bow strings, put rosin on them
What measurements do I need to build one?
do you think I can use beech wood for everything?
why not - try it ;)
What tuning do you use?
So what nylon fishing line did you end up using? Or did you use different ones for different strings? Thanks :)
Hey, I don't remember the brand, but the thicknesses were .11 and .07 mm for the high string, I think
Johánn Hrímland awesome! Thank you :)
Actually as well I was wondering what dimensions your jouhikko actually is? It seems to be larger then others but I love the deeper sound
Did you make the bow?
No, it's a violin bow, but I tried with an improvised one as well (stick + fishing line) and it worked.
can I make it all from maple? also what thickness did you used for the beech wood and spruce? and what gauges are those nylon strings? I was thinking of violin strings maybe
diego BaC the sound might be brighter but yes you can use maple. Birch is a traditional material for these instruments and its very close to maple.
What does it look like behind? At 0:45 you can see through it, and then you just add the beech wood on the top, but did you also add beech in the bottom?
Thank you for the video. It's very cool. Was it a difficult job? It seems very simple. Do you need accurate measurements for the bridge for it to work properly? Did you need any special tools? Also, why use fishing line and not strings made for an instrument?
Hello - yes, beech wood at the back. Because the instrument is as such very simple (e.g. no fretboard), you can experiment with the construction as you go along. I'm sure real Jouhikko strings will sound good/better, I just had no money.
Hi ! I'd like to know how the bow is made ?! I saw that it was made with horse hair but if strings AND bow are made with horse hair, I don't think it's really good !?
(Sorry for my English (Switzerland ;))
Sounds great but isn't spruce used for the soundboard in most instruments rather than for the body?
How is it tuned?
what measures ?
Can you use gut strings?
Sure, but it's either expensive or time consuming.
@@Iranianjunkie I've got 30 yards of it, it's for -weaving- braiding into bow strings. I should have been more descriptive about it.
Yeah gut strings are even more historically accurate ;) Although I would recommend making some out of horse hair. It's cheap and sounds a lot better.
Okay gonna try this. For holy Mead
tunning ?
howd you make the bow
????
In another comment he said he used a violin bow, but he also tried making his own improvised one out of a stick and fishing line, which also worked
How is it tuned? C and E?
A and E, I think
Does someone have the measures ?

I would also like to download a plan which seems to be more professional, he only sells it for 10 GBP but has 92 MB !

If you also want the last one we could split the money and i could send you via paypal
só dá maluco no pedaço
just curious is the tagelharp have three strings or two ?
Todor minchev between two and four strings.
I'd rather use horse hair instead of nylon strings, but they sound great as well. Good job!
круто, нужно попробовать самому сделать.
This time I'll use woodprix instructions to make it by myself.

What a ridiculous great sound for something so ugly! :D
You're a Viking
That's absolutely terrible quality. Absolutely disgraceful. You just made an ugly box and stuck fishing line to it. That is NOT a Talharpa.
Lmao your a Deutsche bag let's see you do better you bum lol
Aren't all stringed instruments similar?
Lol it is
What's the bow made out of?
make the bow strings with dental floss
