      No I completely agree! I really loved their stuff, their stone cold fox palette is such a necessity for me, and some of 9 pans but yeah, their collars are just.. tiring me. I love the packaging and all, but I do feel that they rearrange colors they already had. It’s just too much. I actually only have one COlourPop item, it was a gift & the color is perfect, but I just get a headache when I look at their selections. Plus, at my target, a huge % of the eyeshadow palettes are broken. It makes me wonder what shape other, less visible products are in. And I suspect they send us more rejects because we are a more rural region. I don’t like being offered garbage product for full price, so I avoid their section completely.

    In this day and age WHY aren't companies making beautiful compacts that the customer can fill with the product of their choice seasonally... colors, refills, texture ie cream vs powder etc. Think of all the plastic that wouldn't be thrown out. People with less $ could have a budget version vs more $$ could invest in jeweled or custom art. Everyone could have there own statement piece. Although, this would mean it's less about the prestige of a brand and more about the product and how it works 🤦

    I think the thing is, people who are super into makeup think brands who continue to do well are boring. Brands like Nars and Benefit have a solid customer base who are often very loyal to the brand/specific products. Benefit have the clear advantage of very popular mascaras and brow products - things that are regular re-purchases and their bronzers are popular across a broad age range (my niece and her friends love them). Not every brand wants to be super cutting edge, as that in itself is a small/niche market. I think of By Terry as a classic Space NK brand; appealing to women 35 plus who may have a bit more to spend and like a natural look - they are a French brand after all.
    I'd like to see Rimmel re-brand tho!
    I hate the Dior packaging, but like the backstage stuff. They've had a big resurgence in the makeup space tho. They seem to have prioritised re-formulation over re-packaging. At this point I think their lip oils and blushers are keeping their sales high AF!

    • @montananerd8244
      @montananerd8244 Před 5 měsíci +30

      I agree in many ways. Boring usually equals stable. What I want to look at on YT is different than what I buy. I can look at eyeshadow all day, but my costliest products are my complexion ones. Once I discovered my top choices (high end for important days, drugstore for regular lol), I do not want to hear about the newest thing until I have a reason to consider changing. Those reliable products that we buy over & over are going to be the economic foundation that pays for new shades & formulas. I think the online makeup world tends to forget that we are not the majority of consumers. A lot of my friends who wear makeup daily have very little interest in the details. They often have one product per category and then occasionally they get really into something completely random. One of my friends spends more on her eyelashes in a month than makeup in a year. Another one still buys Mary Kay.
      I'm just surprised brands don't do more low level marking (like sending PR but not doing ads) for existing lines that mesh well with the trends of the moment.

    • @montananerd8244
      @montananerd8244 Před 5 měsíci +15

      Also totally agree about Rimmel! They look the same as ever, which I associate with Kate Moss & heroin chic era. I recently discovered a couple of their products & was very impressed, but the names of some of the products are very confusing/hard to find with all the weird apostrophe use. I'd love to see an updated look for them, grunge is coming back, they could rebrand while keeping that edgier look. Right now, they don't seem to do much to stand out. Half the time, they just disappear into the brand stocked beside them... there's so little to differentiate them.

    Bus Stop is a 1956 Marilyn Monroe movie. It was a drama, which was a departure for her. In it, she plays a singer named Chérie. A 21-year-old virginal cowboy, Beau (Don Murray), kisses her, thinks that means they are engaged, and is determined to marry her, regardless of her opinion on the subject. I think Monroe wore a ruby red lip in the movie, so I think the Nars "Bus Stop" eye shadow might take its inspiration from that.

    Hi Robert. To answer your question about the use of the colour purple with white and why it may make you think of maturer brands, maybe it’s because we are used to these colours being used in retinol based products which have been marketed towards more mature customers? Just a theory. 🤷‍♀️

      @crissy4346 Před 5 měsíci +3

      I was thinking about that too. Revlon is kind of not doing much. I heard they had to file for bankruptcy a few years ago, and I think their best days are behind them. There's nothing about them that makes me want to spend their higher prices for drugstore makeup. They just can't compete with Maybelline, Loreal, ELF, Nyx, Colourpop, and Wet n Wild when it comes to appeal, and honestly I've only had so-so luck with Revlon's quality. Part of their problem is that they don't really appeal to diversity, I don't think I've ever seen a male or transgender model in ads. And their shade ranges are horrendous, same goes for Almay and Physicians Formula. That's naturally going to rub a lot of consumers the wrong way

    listen, I don't care if these "luxury" brands like Dior have "good" makeup, it's always going to be far more expensive than the quality requires. there's so many options now, from indie brands who actually do makeup as their main thing, not a random high fashion brand that decided to sell makeup as a side gig, and tbh I just think it's about the name at this point and while older generations might be willing to spend more for the brand, I think millennial and gen z folks have stopped caring so much about whether or not our products are "luxury"
    edit: I forgot to add that imo it is inexcusable, for any brand, but especially one that calls itself luxury, to still be selling makeup in those hideous 1980s style pans with the little matchstick applicators in 2024. it just makes it look like children's makeup from the 2000s which I feel is probably not what their intended vibe is lmao

    NARS is known among professionals as a great brand for red lipstick -- they have a red lipstick for EVERYONE. truly. also, they're owned by Shiseido now, so I think that's affected the level of pigmentation in their products. I truly loved NARS back in the 90s/00s; I preferred them to MAC. MUFE, NARS, Vincent Longo, Visiora ( very Old Hollywood, excellent products), Shiseido, Shu Uemura and any of the good Japanese gel foundations were what we looked for back then, at least for film/editorial work in the US. gel foundations have been eclipsed by cushions, and I think that makes sense. I still believe Japanese and Korean skincare are the best, and if you like *subtle* makeup that doesn't scream MAKEUP!, then they're also good choices for foundations and color cosmetics. most people don't know how to work with seriously pigmented shades! they think they're patchy, etc. -- no, they just haven't done their prep correctly and don't understand the concept.

      I do love packaging because I’m a person that loves the aesthetics of anything whether it’s makeup, clothes, buildings, etc. but I always wait for a review from Robert because he loves packaging even more than I do but will tell me if it’s trash 😂

      If I’m paying for high quality makeup, I’d like the case to not fall apart after 2 weeks. That’s a great way for a product to leak, go bad, crumble, or dry up- and guess what? I won’t be buying it again.

      @@joeyshabbadoo I completely agree. I just question the protective qualities of a palette shaped like a donut. LOL xox

    Agree with all you've said but want to mention the lack of choice in foundation shades! I have very pale skin and none of the dior foundations work particularly well for me so I use pat mcgrath because the colour range is excellent. After all these years in the business, why aren't make up brands producing a good range of foundation shades, it's ridiculous. At one point I bought La Prairie cavier foundation, the best foundation ever...they discontinued my colour years ago and the range now is still laughable - do they want sales or not? Mac were the first to really cater for the wide market but everyone else is still lacking that vision. Brands have various foundations but even then depending on the foundation type, shades don't match across the formulas, really school kid errors, you would think most brands can't be bothered to try to maximise their sales. In terms of packaging, westman atelier is killing it at the moment, you pay for what you get!!

    I’m still using my favorite remnants of some brands that have been long discontinued, like Prescriptives. I can’t even…. 😆 love all your videos. ♥️

      I loved Prescriptives, especially their foundations and their lipsticks in dark grey metal packaging.

    I know i might get some flack, but i am loving shein cosmetics' makeup containers. Not the stuff inside, but like the lipgloss tubes for their harry potter line.
