  • We pay another visit to our good friend Mick to have a look at an Iconic machine from the sixties, a Lambretta LI 125. This one is slightly different in that it has been fitted with a 200cc engine. We get the background to this particular machine and, as ever, we take out for a spin to get a feel for how she rides.

As a kid in the early 1980s I had series 3 TV 175 Lambretta and my mate had a series 3 LI 150.. Everyone else we knew had newish Vespas (PX125 and PX200) and the other lads used to take the mickey out of our 'clapped-out old Lambrettas' !.. This dried up a little on one particular run when two of the Vespas nipped-up (seized) in quick succession and their dejected pilots had to leave them behind (one at a farm and the other with a kind householder) and complete the trip to the show on the back of our 'clapped-out' Lambrettas ! - There's been a lot of money put into classic scooter development since then and I think reliability has improved in leaps and bounds.. I 'jumped-ship' and now ride classic Nortons and BSAs !!..

I was a 'rocker' back in the day and avoided any contact with the Mods. The great thing today is that we all meet together at Mods & Rocker bike meets and appreciate each others machinery

Just come across this video in my ‘suggestions’. I’m lucky enough to have a 1985 ‘Lambretta GP200’ - but it’s actually a SIL Super Vijay 200, in other words it’s an Indian machine. When Innocenti (Lambretta) went bankrupt in about 1971 the Italian government sold the tooling to the Indian Govt. The Indian and the last Italian machines are basically the same - except for the value… Mine has a 225 kit on it with improved braking, suspension, carburation and ignition. It enjoys being pushed and will sit at 65, and is great fun. The main issue is reliability though. In the past twelve months it’s done a thousand miles but had a clutch cable snap, a fuel line need replacing and the carb rubber mount tearing twice. The other great thing about scooters are the rallies. Easter at Whitby, Kelso at the end of May etc etc. One of the great under reported sub cultures. I’m 63. The other thing to note is the new breed of autos, such as Scomadi and Royal Alloy. I have RA 300 GP which is a great bike. Have a look online.

Looks like a ‘Nammer’. Cheap, badly put together, dangerous scooters built in Vietnam, although originally proper Lambretta’s. Typical story how you got it by the way. Those that know, know.
