- Richard "Richie" Hawtin (born June 4, 1970) is an English-born Canadian electronic musician and DJ who was an influential part of Detroit techno's second wave of artists in the early 1990s and a leading exponent of minimal techno since the mid-1990s
He is best known for his work under the alias Plastikman and for his ENTER. events in Ibiza and around the world. - Zábava
And 10 years later he's still improving, still creating
Mad respect for Richie...
Richie's story is a great example of how people can change / expand their personality in profoundly exciting ways
Who in God's name would dislike this?
Richie Hawtin is the Frank Loyd Wright of electronica.
"Evil" Eddie Richards brought Richie Hawtin along to an all-nighter I promoted in Glasgow (he'd been playing at another club)and he walked in just as I was on the decks, and when I was finished he came up and complimented me on my mixing, describing the tunes and the individual mixes I'd done, so he was clearly listening and checking them out! A classic DJ trainspotter!
terrypussypower hey man bit random, I'm from the UK and want to become a promoter in the techno scene any tips would be helpful thanks
Gary Knight Wow! Where to begin? Stick to what YOU like...start off booking local acts, they'll not be as expensive and they should have a local following. Go out to the kind of gigs you would want to put on yourself and get to know the promoters, DJ's and PA/sound guys there and start building up a network of people you would like to work with. The first act we booked was Aphex Twin back in 1992 and he was only £500! Then we got Carl Craig from the States by directly contacting Planet E records! Going directly to a DJ or act can pay off as you can sometimes bypass agents and save some dough. We got Cajmere the same way! Be bold!
@@K_-_-_-_K Raise a little Cash and Hire a name with some pull.. make sure people know about it, must be promoted.. then do that again and again.. slowly as you can afford to hire bigger names... Make sure everything you do is quality sound lights etc.. people will notice the quality and they will also notice bad ... treat the DJ very well so that their manager will want to let you use some of their other names.
Fucking loved the Pussy power parties. You and Jason along with Twitch and Brainstorm were probably the most respected local techno djs. Remember going through to Edinburgh for a I think a Blast Off party in some vault and it was so hot the paint on the walls was melting. I came out looking like a painter and decorator!!
What an invigorating and uplifting documentary. Thank you. So much here to give focus and spur to creativity.
richie, you look like your pops! that picture of him is a picture of you. right on.
you are true artist. thank you for all the great sounds. plz keep it up!
This was a trip down memory lane. I'm glad I have a lot of his work to put on the turntable and listen to, it's been too long since I've heard Sheet One, Consumed, etc. I know what I'm be playing for the next week now. Great documentary, thank you for posting this.
Christopher Gott song at 1:07:51 please mate?
Ritchie was one who inspired my true passion for electronic music. He was always in the top of my collection and just continued to blow me away.Platikman was a spark for me.
We need an update of the last, almost 10, years! Richie is a leader in technology.
Richie and Sven: couple goals
I was very fortunate to meet him in Edmonton, AB, in Canada. I had a framed pic of him playing at Glastonbury, he honestly took the time, heard my bit, showed him the picture and he signed it!! Woohoo. A genuine article, and a true gentleman. I have yet to meet another DJ with truth in their eyes. Well done! ;)
his parties were second to none. the atmosphere was always garaunteed to be epic!
Tks for sharing this! No more words are necessary!!!!
Production, time frame, artist, electronics, setting, development, history, branding, love for music, family ties it is all in there. Love this insight in Detroit Techno through import Ritchie.
Richie you are amazing i am very inspired after watch your documentary thank you enjoy and have fun life is to short
he is amazing....and that for years ! ...

greetings from switzerland...
Thanks for sharing this, i learned alot from this. danke schön! :)
This is a great docu, loved it . Should have more views.
great documentary thank you
Grande creatore, inventore della minimal e distruttore dell'house music e della techno music.
Richie's parents are so cool! Seems like they encouraged t his son some talents ;)
+N.V. Löfgren had a great conversation with his mother last week. She's phenomenal!!
Awsome doc...really just gained some knowledge.
always an inspiration. My fav dj hands down
Great Doc. Thanks 👍🏻 He deserves way more credit than these edm noobs give him.
Richie Hawtin and dexies got my diploma done. thanks man.
Awesome documentary. Ritchie is one of the best DJ's I've had the pleasure to see perform live. It was the infamous Boo 6 party at Randalls Island Park in NYC and he did a whole Live PA set as Plastikman. It was fucking epic to say the least. I will always have mad respect for the dude.
Brings me back to so many memories. His parties in Detroit were legendary. So many nights lined in black plastic. The Packard, so amazing ! I think My favorite party of his was in Canada in a corn field . Does anyone remember this party 😆😆
Cool documentary
unreal documentary. richie is one of the best (FACT)
Inspirational stuff. The people that hate on him either have short memories or are completely clueless. He's done more for this music than 99% of the current crop. You could even argue that the new breed wouldn't even be DJ's if it wasn't for him, and if they were, they would be playing different music; that's the scope of his influence, which nowadays seems to be very much underappreciated. Regardless of how you feel about what he's up to these days, the man is a living legend and a pioneer.
His surrounding such as his brother, Magda, Sven etc made him reach horizons no one knew existed and he believed in what he did. Who didn't actually ? Thanks for sharing this
Nice set up
Seeing him this saturday first fucking time in my life 🤗🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
If you listen closely, I don't know what track Jeff Mills is playing but it sounds like he's doubling it up near the end of the clip, sick and technical
LOVE IT
Class documentary
LEGEND!!!!!!!
Imagine if Techno and House djs would have conquered the Music scene before Rap and Run DMC in 1986 " Walk This Way"!!!!? It would have been a different world today.
I was at the "End" that night. I remember people shouting at him

+ElNino9_LFC PLASTIKMAN - PLASTIQUE
Ritchie's "orange minus" and Gassenhauer of Chris Liebing, they are kind of techno I miss.
Papa richie
9:39 I love how plastikmom uses the phrase "a real job". lol Not sure she has accepted Rithie's career at this stage. lol
That lurly bitta techno at 10.44?
How old is this documentary?
30:37 Damn that Circuit Breaker tune **grooves** !! Always loved those F.U.S.E. productions.
Suck me Plasma!
15:46...Anyone know the name of that tune??
What song is that at 15:40? I need to have that in my collection! 😅
What song kicks in at 12:50? Its driving me mad, I know it but can't remember who its by.
When Richie talks about Jeff Mills then it goes a live clip.....that techno is super fast....did techno start out much faster than it is now? Because I just saw Richie and Dubfire live and it sounds absolutely nothing like Jeff Mills (obviously a different time period) but I'm just curious if techno has changed that dramatically or if it just a case of two many different styles being lumped under one name.
+Kyle Donaldson I'd say Richie and Dubfire aren't even real techno these days, they play a commercialized version of techno that sounds more like tech house.
Intandem DJ I'm no expert but I dunno.....I actually like tech house but their sets didn't really sound like tech house to me. It was minimal, really dark, and heavy. Nothing about it really sounded commercialized to me, just wasn't super fast like Jef Mils in this video. I've also been listening to some older Ricardo Vilalobos recently....do people consider him not real techno as well?
Intandem DJ Can you give me an example of what you would consider real techno but current, not og.
Intandem DJ Richie's set was amazing by the way. I thought so.
+Kyle Donaldson Techno went through a few changes. In early 2000s it was at about 140 BPM and had alot of tribal influences. Currently the techno is at about 125 - 130 BMP so ye defintely slowed down alot over the last 15 years :)
What's the track at 18:30?
I found it!!!
State of mind - elements ofd tone (J's A mix)
Sound a bit different here, but I need it to cut out the vox and it's good enough for that! :)

SPERMINATOR-UP TEMPO
Track id 17:30 please someone!
How come all these "documentaries" all seem to almost BLATANTLY ignore the Florida scene starting from late eighties and growing into their, OUR, own style: Florida Breaks.... The doc by Idris Elvis makes such a big deal about remixes centering on a focal point being a '98 Tori Amos remix, when Rabbit in the Moon, a groundbreaking group from Florida that brought performance to the music, did that with one of her tracks in '92 called Out of Body Experience, one of the most sought after singles of the entire decade! Followed thereafter by Remixes & Remasters Vol 1 and 2... The doc Pump Up The Volume does the same thing.... Recognize Florida, pinheads!!! We brought Chemical Brothers, in turn the "big and glorious UK house" back to America from where it started..! Recognize!!! Also DJ Icey (booked Chemical Brothers first US gig), Baby Anne (groundbreaking female DJ ahead of her time), Rick West...I could name a hundred, those are just a few.. where's the recognition?!? Anyone??!!!!Honestly, Plastikman is good, but check out Rabbit in the Moon, or Icey... Shoot DJ Gemini has a classic album, listen for free on Bandcamp (I own it, so imma figure out how I can post it, it's a must), DJ Santana ESPECIALLY the Live@1509 here on CZcams...
this is a documentary about detroit and techno not Florida and breaks, both places and genera have there own place and story...enjoy the historyand quit bitching
Lebby Leb RITM is dope, so are baby anne and chemical brothers. i've seen baby anne in indianapolis and RITM live in chicago, my hometown. this is a documentary bout hawtin and his musical come up and style tho...i'm sure there's documentaries about the florida breaks scene out there too. i used to listen to a lot of miami bass in the early 90s 🎶❤️✌️
how old is this documentary?
Alejandro del Solar He mentions it is 10 years since Concept 1, so this must have been released around 2008
+Alejandro del Solar it was released around 2006

+Frank .Drebin States of mind - Elements of tone
no doubt he is a great musician, legendary status for sure. but to credit him with pioneering anything is absurd. he didnt do anything first, he just did it well
well said
WTF are you talking about? Just Google some of the improvements he's personally made to electronic music gear. They don't touch on it in this doc' but he's done a ton of pioneering shit in his genre.
@@acetate909 They have no idea do they.
The kid that looked up to the "big brother" Derrick May now looks older than him! Another proof that "Black don`t crack" :D

Richie is not longer who he was in the 90's.
Nobody is who they once were 20 years ago.
exactly :D:D:
(luckily enough)
You're not the person you were two years ago when you wrote this ^
Surely, you can't expect someone to stay the same.
Peace ~

RH is a perfect example of how the sound and talent of a person gets sequestered into mediocrity, hairstyle, tech talk and utterly boring disco house ... once a pioneer now another berliner rockstar .. boring ...
you sure know how to talk shit and im not even a fan of RH...
Alvaro Gonzalez I was. of Plastikman. Now it's deaf haus muzak. Atonal elitism
Alvaro Gonzalez I was. of Plastikman. Now it's deaf haus muzak. Atonal elitism... sorry if I offended wig my criticism.
Taz Rogers Makes no difference what one imagines. the pleasure is in the sound and art behind it. Duh.
listen to his dj set in Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam for ADE 2017 and then stop talking bullshit.
The nex mixer with all different settings for filters is just amazing. Check that out!
Sven bath, Ritchie hawtin, tiesto, blah blah, not that good :p u want real techno power, ... dj rush. End of story.
DJ Rush is mostly and house electronic. He was good but no competition to Ritchie in any way.Not sure how how you fit Tiesto in this.
