My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

Who in the world can make picking out paint and hovering with serious entertainment value? Michael, of course!
To get any animal hair off upholstery, especially velvet, you should wear a rubber glove and rub the fabric towards you and electrostatically the hair comes away with little effort and no damage to the fabric ! Same for carpets but there is a rubber vacuum attachment that does the same thing for animal hair and it takes a LOT less effort, just a suggestion as I have two dogs. xo
Vacuuming to 'The Sugar Plum Fairly' :) Hilarious! Thank you all for keeping us entertained. My husband was asking about the attraction I've found in watching the chateau channels and it occurred to me that it's like returning to a soap opera on TV as you become familiar with the personalities of the characters, yet it's so much more and without life's ugly bits! All this enhanced by lockdown and involuntary jail-time of course! That green ...

I was chuckling as you were describing how they add the colour to the base paint in-store because that's how we buy it everywhere here!
I didn't know it came any other way than how we do it here (australia) which is the same way as being shown in the video LOOOL. Unless its plain white ceiling paint, you get it mixed to your colour every time LOLOLOL
Same here in the US all paint is mixed.

What's great about mixing paint? You can bring in any sample and they should be able to do computer matching!

During the time your cleaning was filmed I enjoyed longer views of each room. You all take wonderful care of the chateau in addition to renovation work while having a family life, meals, some parties, and rearing Ernest. It's a lot to do and you all do a good job.

So I was looking for more to watch and stumbled upon another very nice vlog called Positano Diaries by Nicki Positano She is a UK ex pat and living in Positano Italy with her Italian husband. Its lovely!!! Love their vege garden and exploring the pretty coastal walks and amazing scenery. Simple pasta dishes that are delish! I am still a 'La Lande'and 'Doing it Ourselves', dyed in the wool fanatic. But like any addict I needed more!!! Greetings from New Zealand🧡

Ha5d a giggle when I saw all the matching dining chairs and then Ernest's high chair.
I CAN'T LOOK AT as the vacuum cleaner tube tip scratches everywhere,you need a special round brush for vacuuming furniture and other knick-knacks 👍
That vacuum has been used on the outdoor doormat, carpet and the upholstered chairs. I love Michael but that isn’t good. The vacuum should have different accessories for different jobs. I couldn’t watch the upholstered chairs nor the boar at the foot table 😩

Consider a brush attachment for woodwork and an upholstery attachment to prevent damage when hoovering. Even a feather duster for delicates.

💓Loved the paint choices very nice... If you wear a rubber glove (marigolds) & spray bottle to lightly mist your gloved hand with water then rub your hand over the chairs the cat n dog hairs stick to the glove, for the days you just want to clean the chairs💓

Michael, you need a cordless Dyson v11 with the large 1.9L bin...not for every job, but a must have. I'm upgrading to this model, with two cocker spaniels and I can tell you they work, plus I've tripped over vac cords more than once! LOL
The Beatrix Potter paint colours are great and the Ambleside green looks really good with the blue and white Spode, I would think the Sage and Onion gate colour would have faded in the sunlight over time to the lovely colour it is now.

I love the way the camera picks up the reflection from the candlebra in the dining room and it looks like screen glitter.
Great job, guys. Here's a suggestion: try putting a few drops of kerosene (or tung oil) in the mop water to give a lovely soft sheen to the wood when the floors dry. (test this first in a place that won't show to be sure the old floor will be ok--usually the oil is actually good for the wood). This is an old world trick used all over the world first half of the last century before there were manufactured cleaners! Love your videos, Michael.
This is how you get you paint colour in America too. They have the magic recipe for the chosen colour, put it into the computer and it works like magic every time☘️

PLEASE forgive the suggestion Michael but I believe you could make work easier with all that wood detail in hallway there is a type of dusting tool that would be more effective & also easier for you (you dust from top down first with the dusting(fluffy end/handle) and then carry on with vaccum as you were (perhaps you had already done it though♥) I cannot imagine how much time involved for cleaning, so good Ryan was there to help. Well onward & upward your cheering section remains here for you. ♥
