It's a tribute to DDR: When this game was released, it was believed to be the last DDR game ever, with this song as the hardest "ultimate final boss" type song in the game. Therefore, the video "asks" the player why they need Konami to create any more songs, and also brings the player back to "nostalgic memories" of the first "boss" song ever, which was Paranoia on 1st mix.
That's because "Challenge" was defined weirdly before Supernova came out; it didn't always just mean "the difficulty level above Expert/Heavy". In MAX2, it was a marker to refer to a few song remixes that were only playable in "Challenging Mode", where the player only had 4 lives. A slight exception is Kakumei, which had a special chart not selectable in normal play and exclusive to Encore Extra Stage, which was also given the "Challenge" moniker because it was a special chart. (continued)
Originally, the only way to access these Challenge charts was through Challenging Mode, where you had to play a course of several songs in a row and just 4 missteps would make you fail the whole course. The otherwise unplayable and unique chart was meant as a reward for making it through the course. In this way, passing the Challenge chart (and therefore the whole course) was much harder than just passing the Heavy chart. The distinction becomes lost when the song is fully unlocked.
Yeah, but there are still other Challenge courses that have this song being played on Expert. So the difficulty in this chart is still lost to two other ones.
Basically, "Challenge" used to mean "a chart separate from the main charts specifically designed to be played in a special mode, such as Challenging Mode or Encore Extra Stage". This continued in Extreme, where songs like Sakura were first unlocked in Challenging Mode before regular mode, and only the Challenge chart was first playable before any of the other charts were. In essence, the Challenge charts were only "intended" to be played in a certain mode, and were only unlocked for (continued)
@ddrfreak805 I completely agree. I think Konami planned to end the DDR series here because DDR EXTREME had the "goodbye" vibe all over it. Especially with this song, the video shows how they worked on DDR Music, then included the first Paranoia (first Konami song) in the middle, combo was 573 (pronounced KONAMI in Japanese), then the "Thank you for playing" in the end. It seems konami kept making DDR because they thought ITG would take over. I love DDR, but it should have ended here.
Pluto Relinquish has a max bpm of 800. MAX. (period) has a max bpm of 600. 888 has a max bpm of 444. Pluto the First has a max bpm of 440. A lot of various boss songs have max bpms of 400. However, since PR's 800 only occurs during freezes, you don't actually have to read any arrows scrolling at that speed. This would make MAX. (period) the highest bpm that must be actually read.
Back then, Challenge was meant as a standalone difficulty for Nonstop Mode (4 Lives Challenging Mode or not) or any special event, and was basically the difficulty to be between Standard and Heavy (or a second Heavy). The rule of thumb for Challenge-only remixes was that if you could do really well at the original song on standard/heavy, you can survive the Challenge-only remix. If Challenge was an additional difficulty, it's in-between or post-Extreme 2, a foot-breaker.
that might not be the case fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/11024619_1065229200170417_6765302874545545966_n.jpg?oh=5dd0bb0ffe7baa095f2a37ebc329b65a&oe=557D7C84&__gda__=1434839508_7d019378597857c582bca7314a6380a9
Because it, like all CHG charts at the time, was scripted specifically as part of an Oni Mode course; because it is featured on both the "2MB ROAD" and "LEGEND ROAD" courses.
Paranoia Revolution Challenge ties with Valkyrie dimension now. They're both 19s. But personally I'd say the hardest song to pass right now is STILL Pluto Relinquish Double Challenge (which I would say should be a 19). The one who first Full Combo'd Tohoku Evolved Double Expert (on Encore Extra Stage) and AA'd Possession Double Challenge (which is a 19), can only get a B on Pluto Relinquish Double Challenge. Numbers don't mean everything.
I forgot to mention London Evolved ver. B, at 420 bpm. And today (5/30/12), a new song was unlocked, Tohoku Evolved, that appears to have a max reading bpm of 680, which would beat MAX. (period).
The reason behind that is the challenge chart was meant for the course MAX. (period) showed up in. It was made to be slightly easier so a person could pass it after playing several songs straight in a row.
I agree that PR is definitely more popular than TE, if only because it took so long for players to pass when it was first unlocked compared to TE. Whether or not one is harder than the other is kind of subjective as they have the same foot rating and the world record scores are very close. While the above is true, on a list of "fastest songs ever", Tohoku Evolved's 1020 bpm still tops Pluto Relinquish's 800 bpm (or 805 if you ask some people).
I'm hoping this becomes an unlockable for DDRX with a different heavy chart. even though I like the heavy chart, a lot of people don't like it at all because it's too hard to sight read when playing. plus that's the reason it's not in american DDR's and while looking at the data on the EXTREME disk for AC, I found 9 spots that had nothing in it making me believe that in the beta of DDR EX, max. (period) was supposed to be there but taken out because people didn't like how fast it was going.
@xHuntedGunzPCGx I see, that reminds me of Sakura. From what I've heard, it's Heavy chart was a 10-footer while it's Challenge chart was a 9-footer. I also heard it's Heavy foot rating was brought down a foot.
The final score is always the song's foot rate x 1 million. Both charts are rated 10s, so both have a max score of 10 million even though heavy is clearly harder.
Yep, but since those don't have to be read like PR's 800, Valkyrie dimension's max reading BPM is 480 (on Challenge only). MAX. (period) still has the highest required reading BPM.
Update as of today (6/4/12) - the last step of Tohoku Evolved scrolls at 1020 bpm, beating both Pluto Relinquish and MAX. (period) for fastest scrolling speed and fastest required reading speed.
Add on: But, they continued on making DDR versions, the latest being X3. The hardest DDR song in EXISTENCE is Valkyrie Dimension, with a 19 Chart on Challenge.Few people have passed it.
@margomundo I'm not the best judge, but the Heavy would probably be in the 16-17 range, with Challenge one block below it or so. Maybe a 18/16 comparison?
@adinesn Yeah, back in the older games, sometimes they did that. Sakura's another example where the Heavy's a 10(An easy 10, but I count it as one, despite any protests people might have.) but the Oni/Challenge chart is only a 9.
@SenseiSNES I know you got a lot of shit for you're comment but what the hell. Pluto Relinquish is harder than this and actually clocks in at a higher speed than just MAX.(Periods) 600BPM.
regular play on future games or home versions because it would kinda suck to have an unplayable chart in regular mode. So if you want to believe that Challenge charts should always be harder than Expert charts, then, in games before Supernova, imagine that only Expert is playable in regular mode, and Challenge is restricted to where you only have 4 or 1 lives to clear it. That makes it a good deal harder to pass. As for Shock Arrow Challenge charts, that's a topic for later.
Try some of the Challenge Only Remixes in Extreme 2, I think some of those were the easiest to Full Combo. _Look to the Sky: Trance Mix_ was the easiest of the bunch.
@PhantoMNiGHT321 Often times challenge is easier than heavy...I've noticed heavy is more technical while challenge is more tiring...but this does not apply to every song.
On the old scale, a 10 out of 10 for both Heavy and Challenge. I would hazard on the X scale, it'd be about a 15 or 16 (it's not above 17 for sure, that would be Fascination, Pluto and Valkyrie Dimension territory). At least despite the jumping, this chart makes sense. All of the post-Extreme 2 (as in, after Paranoia survivor MAX) boss charts seem to be written by an idiot or for a masochist.
I never thought that challenge would be easier than heavy, even though I can't play either difficulties. But did anybody notice that you get more points on challenge for each step than on heavy. :P
Take another look, both "players" got the same score in the end. Starting with MAX, you were scored based on accuracy, rather than combo. The reason the Challenge "player" got more points is because the chart had fewer arrows.
@DCstar Yeeeeah hahaha that was a while ago... I actually agree with you now, as far as I can remember I posted that cause I like (Period) better than Relinquish... And I was getting a little tired of its reign of terror XDD
Although in technical terms, this wasn't the last DDR, this song was like a final goodbye to me, since all the rest of the ddrs after were just plain crap. Trigger and Pluto Relinquish may or may not be harder, but this song is without argument, the final challenge of shall we say "old school DDR." (And notice how this version of DDR had like the most epic song list ever with all of our favorites. And this song gives off the impression of the conclusion of the series anyway. xD)
Konami didn't sue Roxor because ITG tried to copy off DDR. They sued Roxor because they were selling upgrade kits to Extreme AC owners that would upgrade Extreme AC into ITG.
If you look at only Konami's attempts at pushing the difficulty curve as high as they can go, then yes, Paranoia Revoluion Single Challenge and Valkyrie dimension Single Challenge are crap. However, their Expert charts are amazing 18s. Anti-Matter Challenge is also a really good 18. Also, the three Doubles 19s are much better than their Single counterparts.

@@CauchyIntegralFormula I have seen OtP
Yeah, but there are still other Challenge courses that have this song being played on Expert. So the difficulty in this chart is still lost to two other ones.

I wonder which staff members were recorded during the making of this music video... hell of a day at the office.
max. is a love letter to the earlier bemani titles. that says we're going to the next evolution.
Quick question: why do you need Konami original songs?
Because KONAMI Originals offer diversity rather than just having BEMANI crossovers from IIDX, pop'n music, GuitarFreaks & DrumMania, etc.
uh most of the songs from iidx popn and gfdm are also konami originals buddy
Theroux So that Konami can make hard remixes of them. Ever heard of Paranoia Revolution?
Bc the license wings they picked sucks

@ddrfreak805 I completely agree. I think Konami planned to end the DDR series here because DDR EXTREME had the "goodbye" vibe all over it. Pluto Relinquish has a max bpm of 800.

Holy ****! A CS Exclusive!!!
Max Period is my ALL TIME FAVORITE boss song on the whole ddr series.
March 6th 2015 - You no longer need Konami Original songs.
that might not be the case

Lol good one
Shinku Quickman I don't get it.
lori, that was the date when max period was unlocked on DDR 2014
Beating this song as an extra stage is a pain because of the forced ×1,5 scroll speed
this song brings a new meaning to "on the rag" XD
Because it, like all CHG charts at the time, was scripted specifically as part of an Oni Mode course; because it is featured on both the "2MB ROAD" and "LEGEND ROAD" courses.
@MarioZ43 Pluto Relinquish or Dead End (GROOVE RADAR SPECIAL) are very heavy, but Max 300 is THE legend.
thank you for playing
@gabrieltrash WRONG! Omega is Naoki, 2MB is Yuichi Asami.
OMEGA = Naoki Maeda
2MB = Yuichi Asami
I love that they put paranoia on the middle of the song, very good :P 2MB is a good artist

@blueapple128 Actually, Pluto Relinquish reaches 805 bpm at the end.
I just realized that PR Oni contains steps from this song's Heavy chart
@SenseiSNES and now it's Valkyrie Dimension (740 BPM)
Scratch that. EGOISM 440. Especially hard on doubles
MAX. (period) sounds like a designation for tampon strength.
I'm hoping this becomes an unlockable for DDRX with a different heavy chart.

Has this or any other Extreme CS JP song been featured on a DDR OST? I can't seem to recall them ever being in one.
Is this song even possible to finish?!i mean, really, look at the ending! O.o
Because the Challenge chart is made specifically to be played in ONI mode. (2MB course... but then, they added the Heavy one IIRC, to LE GEN!)
oh gawd i was looking for this vid everywhere...*likes* ill never lose you again..
@xHuntedGunzPCGx I see, that reminds me of Sakura. From what I've heard, it's Heavy chart was a 10-footer while it's Challenge chart was a 9-footer. I also heard it's Heavy foot rating was brought down a foot.
How in the hell is it even possible to match those steps at that speed.
It's just the BPM, not the actual steps, so it's really just a ton of 8ths
I think the two difficulties should have been swapped, with some slight swappings between the charts. thumbs up if you agree.
Thank god they still have this in Castle park.
This eats Pluto Relinquish alive, that should be the highest solid bpm ever recorded in a DDR song... The second being Pluto The First
The final score is always the song's foot rate x 1 million.
Just because PR may be more difficult doesn't make Tohoku Evolved suddenly "not count" on the record list of fastest songs.
Although deltaMAX comes close at 573 bpm. (Arguably 572 because there's no notes left by the time it hits 573.)
It's kind of funny that Danford, Foy, and Ward teamed up to prove that we didn't, then Konami got all pissy about it.
Update as of today (6/4/12) - the last step of Tohoku Evolved scrolls at 1020 bpm, beating both Pluto Relinquish and MAX. (period) for fastest scrolling speed and fastest required reading speed.
Oh yeah, forgot that.
IMAGINE THE HORROR OF A 20...
Tohoku Evolved's ending goes up to 1020, breaking Pluto Relinquish.
This song was. I think it was in the DDR Party Collection. It's was either that or Festival.
Add on: But, they continued on making DDR versions, the latest being X3. The hardest DDR song in EXISTENCE is Valkyrie Dimension, with a 19 Chart on Challenge.Few people have passed it.
AHEM. EGOISM 440. doubles CDP.
also, the newest version is World
they will probably have some or all song already on the game, can't wait for octo-move.
@margomundo I'm not the best judge, but the Heavy would probably be in the 16-17 range, with Challenge one block below it or so. Maybe a 18/16 comparison?

@SenseiSNES I know you got a lot of shit for you're comment but what the hell. Pluto Relinquish is harder than this and actually clocks in at a higher speed than just MAX.(Periods) 600BPM.
Thank you. That makes sense now.
Why is Heavy mode harder than Challenge? I remember a lot of older songs were like this too, like Kakumei, Sakura, etc.
It's also with Kakumei.
Paranoia revolution challenge 1:00 to 1:03
you mean paranoia 180? that's where those steps are from
TBL Kitten I don't know if it's also in paranoia 180, i've only seen that in paranoia revolution challenge.
Deva Pain Paranoia Revolution uses many parts from many different songs. There's a video on YT that shows it.
regular play on future games or home versions because it would kinda suck to have an unplayable chart in regular mode.

GG KONAMI
finally got B on a challenge chart song on DDR, i have always gotten E or D in them.
Try some of the Challenge Only Remixes in Extreme 2, I think some of those were the easiest to Full Combo.
_Look to the Sky: Trance Mix_ was the easiest of the bunch.
A couple other songs are like that. Sakura comes to mind.
@PhantoMNiGHT321 Often times challenge is easier than heavy...I've noticed heavy is more technical while challenge is more tiring...but this does not apply to every song.

@MLKFNC Actually Omega and 2MB are the same person... Naoki Maeda...
Why is Challenge easier than Heavy?
Because the JP CS's Legend Road course has the Challenge chart as the 6th song, after PARANOiA Survivor MAX Challenge
@DCstar Yeeeeah hahaha that was a while ago... I actually agree with you now, as far as I can remember I posted that cause I like (Period) better than Relinquish... And I was getting a little tired of its reign of terror XDD
Anti-Matter Challenge and Valkyrie dimension Expert have very few crossovers, certainly much fewer than PSMO.
Although in technical terms, this wasn't the last DDR, this song was like a final goodbye to me, since all the rest of the ddrs after were just plain crap. I'd give Heavy 16/17 Challenge 16/15, definitely isn't as hard as newer boss songs.
Does anybody else hear something like "Why do you need konami songs" in the final run? What the hell is up with that? O.o
how do you do autoplay in ddr extreme?
@PumpBreaker007 Nice to know, thnx
the forgroung: a Shit-load of arrows
the back groung: the making of ddr
It is. I've done it. It's just really really difficulty.
Doing it on 1.5x reverse, however? Doubtful.
讚
They should remake a DDR on ps3 or xbox that has every single konami original song on it
@Mannike54 'Autoplay' is basically a bot that perfects every arrow possible.
Which DDR game did they put MAX. (period)? And I mean a USA game!
Maybe DDR Universe or DDRX3 (maybe)...
MAX. (Period) was never in a US/EU CS DSR game, only on Extreme JP. You can play this in the arcade though in newer games (DDR 2014 - present)
Just as a heads up, you didn't HAVE to have 4 lives. They did have the challenge songs.
that song is still bad ass
@PhantoMNiGHT321 Yeah...the Sakura challenge chart is a joke compared to heavy...
I hate it when a challenge is easier than a heavy.
Yet the 'Legend' of Max wouldn't be?
Como le haces para que salga el combo en autoplay, porque cuando yo le pongo en autoplay no sale el contador del combo
I think on the X scale it would be heavy foot rating 16 and challenge 15
hey you were right! lol
the part where it shows PARANOiA is funny
