- Following on from our walk of Blencathra ( • Lake District Walks | ... ), Neil returns to Mousthwaite Comb to visit Souther Fell, in the north east of the English Lake District. This fell is supposedly haunted by a ghost army, which has been seen by various witnesses on numerous midsummer's days, but will he have a sighting?!
Check out our route, here: explore.osmaps.com/route/2090...
A note on the pronunciation: in this video, Neil goes with "Sooter" Fell, because that's what several guides, and online commentators ,say ("Sue-ter" to rhyme with "hooter"). As a Cumbrian viewer with local farming friends has pointed out, though, it should be pronounced "Sow-ter," which certainly makes sense with the name itself, which seems to have been "Souterfel" or "Souterfell" until at least 1783, when "The County of Cumberland Surveyed" by T. Donald was published, and it became "Souther Fell."
However you pronounce it (and bearing in mind, there's the linguistic minefield of Mungrisedale just round the corner), it's a great little fell, and well worth an expedition! Enjoy!

@@LakeDistrictFilms my pleasure you have a lovely channel debs xx
Thanks for sharing another great video Neil.. You had a fantastic day for it! Mousethwaite Combe is my favourite route for Blencathra. Done it many times.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. Definitely the best way up!
Really enjoyed this once more. Great film 👍
Thanks, John. Greatly appreciated.
Happy childhood memories!! Had a May bush in my childhood home here in Sydney - which of course bloomed in September, when my siblings & I would play amongst it’s branches & pretend it was snowing 🥰 ☃️ Thanks for sharing your lovely hike 🥾🪂🐑🐑🐑 & your spooky storytelling 👻😆
Thank you! It's also like confetti, isn't it, so just a slight brush and you get showered in petals!
Thank you for sharing. Enjoying all your videoes. In 2008 I was a novice hiker, we missed Souther Fell due to misreading my map. I have unfinished business. This video has prompted me to go and tick it off.
That's great to hear - it's an easy fell to miss out, but with the effort, particularly if you get a good day for the views. All the best.
It's a cracking little fell...always loved that story
Fab-u-lous! And what a fantastic day you had. So jealous!
Thank you - very lucky with the weather!
we miss you and your happy smiley face Neil, hope you're ok!
Thank you! A new film is on its way soon!
@@LakeDistrictFilmsI cannot love this comment enough!!! :D :D
Superb video as always. Perfect Saturday morning viewing. All though I did miss you offering up both parth and paff pronunciations ;)
Next time! Thanks for the comment - all the best
I really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work 👍
Thank you!
Hi Neil. Wonderful video again, I’ve still to do Souther Fell. Might have to give that route a go. Thanks for sharing your adventure as always. Cheers Dave 😀🥾⛰🏴
Thanks, Dave. It's a grand little hill - worth the effort! Enjoy!
Wonder clip 🙏❤️ I was in peak district for a few days last July! Totally in love! Next year I hope I can visit the lake district also!
Thank you. You should! Hope you have a great trip.
@@LakeDistrictFilms I loved it so much thank you 🙏🥰
lovely video Neil, thanks for taking us along! :) I pronounce it Souther Fell though, I hope you wont take offence :)
Thank you! I'm not claiming that pronunciation is 100% correct - logically, it should obviously be "Souther", and then everybody can get on with their days!

Another great video. Thanks for the route idea and the interesting history lesson.
Where have those sunny days gone? They seem like a distant memory now.
Thank you - glad it's useful. Mousethwaite Comb is a very helpful way up and down. Hope the weather picks up, but doesn't go too far the other way!
I've never done Souther Fell so found this very interesting. Loved the ghost story. Not been up to the Lakes in the last few weeks due to this dreadful weather. What happened to summer? In the meantime thanks for taking us along on this great little video.
Many thanks, David.
Fantastic video, hike, mountain history, and commentary. Loved the old ghost story and tried to visualise it!! Regards, Ashley
Thanks, Ashley. Glad you enjoyed it! All the best
Thanks for taking us with you on this fabulous walk. You have given me inspiration to go and do that walk, next time I'm up in the Lakes. How long did the walk rake you?
Thank you - that's so good to hear - I hope you enjoy it. It's probably a 2 - 3 hour walk, although we always take longer, with the filming.
Curiously this is the second video on Souther Fell I've watched in the last few weeks along with the accompanying ghost story. No army in that video either.
Maybe we have to be there bang on midsummer's day!
Good effort with the fells name - but it's not quite right. 🤷♂
Thanks, Andrew - blame Mark Richards! Would you go with more of "Sowter"?
@@LakeDistrictFilms Since I'm a Cumbrian born and Bred, with local farming friends on't tother side of Skidda, it is indeed pronounced Sow ter.
@@andrewjohnston9115 Cheers - will add a note!
