    The Metal Earth Lunar lander and module was a challenge, it took me a few nights. I think it looks pretty neat. Built the USS Missouri, Tiger 1(Simple), Pirate ship and Star Trek Enterprise. Very fun, and a great break you stated.

    I also got a Metal Earth Millennium Falcon years ago. I put it together long before I had spent any time messing with PE and it gave me a ton of confidence in my abilities to tackle photo etch parts. I recommend them to anyone that tells me that they are hesitant to tackle photo etch. Great recommendation!

    I recently built a couple of Metal Earth kits as gifts. They are small and take up very little space on a shelf or window sill. With so many subjects available, there's something for almost anyone's interests.
    I started with the Golden Snitch for my daughter to commemorate how much we enjoyed Harry Potter together. I built the Colosseum for her after she and her husband visited Rome.
    I'm a mediocre plastic modeler but these turned out great.

    The David Union 150 pin vice is also a fantastic tool, and has a larger range of capacity in the chuck. Those drills with the coloured sleeves are awful in hand tools. They are designed for very high speed and as they have a shallow helix they tend to "screw" into the plastic and snap very easily.

    A tip if you have one of those double end pin vises. Take a thumbtack and put it into the end that meets the palm of your hand; it makes using it much more comfortable.

    Nice! Thanks for looking at Metal Earth!
    Since childhood built plastic models, now most of them are sitting in the boxes- no time, no place set up fancy shop for building them with airbrush station, multiple tools, materials, paits/chemicals etc. even though I've got all of that mostly sitting in different closets...
    For me, Pro for Metal Earth - all you need few special tools, super glue for small parts, few hours of satisfying work (you can do it anywhere - I did it during my work trips while sittingin in the hotels), and you get pretty nice-looking models!
    Thanks again!

    I have built a few Metal Earth models. They’re cool to assemble once in a while, when taking a break from fine scale work. I prefer the photo etch detail sets for fine scale models such as those from Eduard. I like that they are more precise and detailed to fit a model and are to scale. Metal Earth are more of a pastime from my pastime…
    I suppose I lean more towards creating highly detailed, multi material, accurate representation of the real thing and that is my enjoyment and challenge. There are some that enjoy Metal Earth and the limitations they present, and that’s fine. I used to build plane kits from cardboard stock that were printed in an Air Force magazine. They were nice but still lacked the capability of fine detail. When you want precision scale across models for comparison, extreme detail with resin, photo etch and custom details, the ability to go way beyond the box kit, there is nothing like plastic and resting kits to be able to achieve those goals.

    Nice video folks! I have been using the drill bits with the 1/8 inch shanks for several years and typically just use my fingers when not inserting them in my Dremel, but I may have to invest in the handle you demonstrated. I have a few of the Metal Earth kits, both built and in my stash. I have taken Metal Earth kits on vacations as I need fewer tools than I use on my typical models, and I do not paint the Metal Earth kits. You also brought up a good point in that they require you to work with what is essentially a heavy photoetch set. The Metal Earth kits are a great way to expand your modeling horizons!

    I have been building the metal earth models for several years. They look nice when finished and as someone else stated they don't take up a lot of shelf space. Be careful where you buy them if you are watching your pennies. I bought my first ones from a bookstore. Then I was at Hobby Town and saw that they carried them also but in a much smaller package and a lot smaller price.

    That's a pretty cool looking pin vice, I think I may check it out depends how much though.
    The photo etch, I hate the stuff, use it for slings on figures, grills and screens. But the rest I usually use the plastic. I can appreciate the talent and skill of a modeler who does it for minute details like hinges, padlocks, etc. But not me.

    I have this Dspiae pin vise. It is brilliant but very small for my hands. It is clearly designed for small Asian hands. 1cm longer handle would make a world of difference. Dspiae have now also released scribing hooks that fit in this pin vise.. It is now a 2 in 1 tool. Great value for money.

    IMHO they missed a bet with the vintage Klingon ship. The original came with clear, green tinted windows for lighting. The original used a grain of wheat bulb which was prone to burnout. I'm pretty sure that the original bulbous front area of the ship also had window holes for lighting, not window decals.
    It is nice they included the plated parts though. Sure they're not canon, but they remind me of the kit I build in my youth.

    • @Palaemon44
      @Palaemon44 Před 6 měsíci

      Plating is handy when doing a quick and dirty alternative for lighted parts. On sci-fi kits in small scales like 1/2500 I put bare metal foil bits on parts you would actually light in larger scales. Color the foil with translucent paints or makers, then clear coat. Ambient light reflects off the shiny metal through the translucent color and gives a fairly decent “lit” effect on small surfaces.

    Hey there, from sunny summer New Zealand. The background took my attention in the pin-vise section. Where did the Freedom Air 737 model come from? Enquiring minds need to know!
    As a Freedom Air Captain during the “yellow aircraft” times, I had the pleasure of flying both the yellow 737, and A320 aircraft….including the Warner Brothers Movie World theme park “Loony Toons A320. Is the 737 on the shelf made from the Draw Decals sheet, created by my good friend Jodie Peeler, by any chance?
    Nice to see this “blast from the past”

  • @Rogerholberg
    @Rogerholberg Před 6 měsíci +1

    I have the Dspiae pin vise, albeit marketed by Meng. It's a great pin vise but the bits are no good at all, at least the ones I've purchased. The smallest diameter bits break at the slightest. I've read of other people having the same problem. Now, I got mine some time ago and they may have changed whoever supplied them and the metal they are made of. This I don't know. But the smallest diameter bits that came with the pin vise and those I bought separately later (also marketed for Dspiae by Meng) would break if I looked at them wrong. Be advised if you plan to be using the two or three smallest bits.

    • @zacklewis342
      @zacklewis342 Před 6 měsíci +2

      Those tungsten steel bits are completely inappropriate for modeling. They don't need to be hard, they need to be strong. Even pig iron will have no problem with soft plastic. People are overpaying for extra-brittle bits that are designed for electronics work.

    • @niro017
      @niro017 Před 6 měsíci

      @@zacklewis342 As a professional machinist, I concur, the tungsten carbide drill bits are super hard, (harder than diamond, if I remember correctly), designed for drilling epoxy glass circuit boards, and therefore, super brittle, and only useable in a super rigid machine set up, a manual milling machine (used very very carefully) or cnc machine that is capable of the rpm required, depending on the diameter, (5000+rpm). If you break one off in your project, it is now junk, cause you will never get it out. High Speed Steel, HSS, is all you need for the drilling requirements of our hobby, they are hard enough to maintain an edge, yet are more forgiving to misalignment, that would occur when hand drilling.

  • @melvynkersley-nc8fx

    At the end of the day, small drill bits need HIGH rpm to function properly, anything under half a mm will probably choke on plastic and snap especially if you push that bit to hard!🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @FineScaleModelermagazine
      @FineScaleModelermagazine  Před 6 měsíci

      For going through plastic or wood, your don't need high RPM. High RPM is just going to melt the plastic. We've been using micro drill bits for years to drill tiny holes and they work quite well in a pin vise.

    • @melvynkersley-nc8fx
      @melvynkersley-nc8fx Před 6 měsíci

      @@FineScaleModelermagazine Hi, I hope you don’t think my comments were a criticism!? It is generally recognized in engineering that the smaller the drill the higher the rpm needed to function properly! I’m not suggesting that we all stop using pin vices, I use them all the time,it would be a struggle for us to use,say a Dremel to drill some of the holes we have to drill! You just have to be watch that the drill doesn’t “choke” when breaking through! Cheers!

      Re Metal Earth: I have inflicted several of these kits as gifts on my kids & grandchildren, anyone not in a position to politely refuse them, and I finally made one of the least complex models for myself. I can guarantee that for the myopic & arthritic of us to whom age has not conferred patience, it was a downward learning curve, more a painful plummet (I may still have shards embedded in my calluses) and my "Graph" Zeppelin more closely resembles an unlabeled used soup can. Worst is to see my daughter in law's meticulous renderings of buildings, battleships & the full metal earth earth. So in anger & perplexity I must sadly allow others to practice.
