- Minnesota politicians from both parties are fed up with the Metropolitan Council, a group of unelected officials with taxing authority. The Met Council is notorious for going $1 billion over budget with the Southwest Light Rail project. WCCO’s Esme Murphy sought a variety of perspectives who all agree: something needs to be done about the Met Council.

I was on the light rail project as an electrician. Whenever i speak of that project its to try and express the amount of wasted time=money. I dont even know where to begin to try and explain. I never would have thought that such poor planning and engineering and much more could go on for so long. It obviously got done but holy hannah! The wasted labor/ time, over time.....mind blowing.
DUH comes to mind. These boondoggles like light rail are so oversubsedized that it goes beyond any economic viability. People that ride these things are not paying what they should. And someone like myself who will never ride it are being forced to pay for it. Its sickening.

I think they were before Covid. Just saying. If you check now, I’ve heard ridership on buses in EP is down to 20%of what it was before Covid.
If they 1 Billion in over budget they have no business taking on any more large infrastructure projects. They need to show some initiative to align themselves appropriately to take on this type of stuff

It's not the City Council in charge - It's the Metro Council, they run MTC. That council is not just Minneapolis but the whole State of Minnesota and the Federal Government (Departments of Transportation, duh where do you think the money comes from.

Elections don't always equal accountability. Many politicians around the US have done horrendous things yet, they still have a seat in congress.
I see the Met Council as a good thing that we should keep. Offloading the loads to other agencies like MN DOT which oversees the entire state would only put more pressure on other agencies. If we want to see reform, the engineers and project managers should be doing more to double or triple check things and ensuring added variables are minimized and finalized.
The Met Council is supposed to be holding the engineers and contractors accountable. They have failed hard in that responsibility. Why should we keep the members if they can't do the job? What would you recommend for solving that? Seriously, I ask with good intent.
