Agree about keeping the Gabba the way it is and a new stadium above the new Brisbane Underground. Smart thinking! 👍🏻
Speaking of electrified transport, the big uptake of electric scooters and bikes would be a good chance for Brisbane to link together all of its existing dedicated bikeways. Mainly for safety off the roads, but also it would make a huge dent in traffic congestion if more people felt comfortable accessing locations via bike. It may not be a grand architectural or engineering feat, but it would be a huge win for our massive sprawling city - one of the largest urban sprawls in the world.
There are definitely big plans to improve this with the new Woolloongabba PDA, to come out end of this year! Huge connections from the Gabba to Suncorp Stadium.
Yes, safety is a priority, but at the same time, visual pollution by dumped scooters can be an eyesore and hazard.

Space is at a premium there. I don't think a second stadium is efficient use of that expensive area, especially not if such a stadium is going to be empty most of the time. Besides: no one would want to live that close to 2 massive stadiums generating noise if ever both are in use.

Great video - I was aware of most of these projects but a really good summary that paints a picture of a city on the move. There are a lot of comments comparing Brisbane to Sydney and Melbourne. Each of these cities has its own great and not so great aspects. As a former Sydney-sider living in Brisbane for the last 15 years, I can’t see Brisbane overtaking Sydney or Melbourne in terms of size or ‘global recognition’ - and I’m totally fine with that. The best thing that urban planners in Brisbane can do is to forget the comparisons with any other city and focus on making the best version of Brisbane possible by providing this great infrastructure while maintaining as much of Brisbane’s heritage and greenery as possible. The next ten years are literally a once in a lifetime opportunity and it would be sad to see decision making unduly influenced by trying to keep up with what’s happening elsewhere.
Time for Brisbane to shine. We certainly have the opportunity to be a viable alternative to Sydney and Melbourne.

You're right. The gabba upgrade is ridiculous. Youre idea about a new stadium over the road is a great idea. Probably cost the same as the gabba upgrade but have 2 stadiums instead of one. Whats planned for above the gabba train station?

Green space is planned above Cross River Rail at the Gabba. Not sure why you’d deliver huge mass transit and no significant structures to compliment the use of mass rapid transit? Seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

Gabba is currently rediculous as it’s not disability friendly and no proper female change rooms! It was designed for men! No other choice but to make it for the Paralympians! Brisbane needs to focus on better public transport infrastructure especially in the outer suburbs of the south west, traffic is becoming a nightmare, they need a railway line all the way to Beaudesert.
Brisbane is an amazing progressive city. Has so much going for it. Climate, employment opportunities, sporting events. This was a quick wrap of the projects which was really too fast to take in the structure of each 1 especially if not from the city.
It does make sense to build a separate stadium over the railway station as the cost involved for just an extra 8k capacity is quite ridiculous.
An 80k capacity stadium seems a lot now but in the decades to come, it will become filled to capacity especially if teams like the AFL Brisbane Lions are very successful. Even 70k capacity. The stadium won't be completed until the end of the decade and Brisbane's population will be closer to 3M by then. 4M to 5M by 2040.
100%. We need to future proof the capacity, not limit it. We need to think BIG!

Sydney and Melbourne are too self absorbed in their importance and forget there are cities and regions which deserve aknowledgement. The Gabba redevelopment needs to be reimagined into a mega stadium. Brisbane Live is the perfect project to cover the unsightly rail lines. Keep up your inspirational dialogue with the local Olympic board and government. Re transport, what has happened to the underground rail line from St Lucia through West End and CBD , New Farm and Newstead to Hamilton North Shore? This would provide Brisbane with one of the best connected public transport systems.
It certainly would be nice to connect those precincts, Keith! I think the Metro project is our best shot. A lot more affordable to deliver over heavy rail and gives us the flexibility to adapt routes as required. Appreciate the kind words as well.
Yeah, Brisbane needs a MEGA Stadium, when the Gabba can't even reach 50% attendance levels for sporting events. But yeah, lets build a 90,000 seat stadium that will have 70,000 empty seats for sporting events. Great logic.
Also, Brisbane will never have a good transport system, while we have morons making decisions at the helm. Lets build an expensive busway system that directly competes with the train network, instead of feeding the train network.
Have you been to Newstead lately? 15-20 High rise residential towers, and not a single cent spent on improving the infrastructure. As long as the Polly's get rich by selling off to the Asian market to make a quick buck, this city will remain a dumb city.

Brisbane will become a decent alternative to Melbourne and Sydney, especially Sydney which is a hole with absurd real estate costs and half the road network owned and run by transurban.
That aside Brisbane also provides great access to the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

the thing about the Gabba is, it's Iconic. Having a newer, larger stadium next to it would minimise the Gabbas importance and would look a bit odd. Happy to just have the upgrade.

Moved here a year ago from Melbourne and I'm keen to stay. I think the place is fantastic! Love the weather, love South Bank, love the thorough integration of greenery in all areas of the city and suburbs. I've still got so much more to explore.

I agree, pulling down the current Gabba stadium to add only 8000 seats doesn't make sense, but why about the old ANZ stadium at Nathan? No major infrastructure near it, why now do a major rebuild on it? The Netball stadium is right next to it as well, garden city up the road for transport and shopping. Just a thought.
I think the train and metro at the Gabba will be the main game changer, as well as all the amenity likes pubs, restaurants for pre and post match.
Can't believe how they justify an 8,000 seating increase in a stadium worth billions of dollars when, like you said, right next door they could build a flashy new one that caters to much more people and still keep the existing Gabba.
To me, that's a clear sign of keeping promises to developers and land owners as opposed to looking after Brisbane's best interests.

OH NO!!!!!!my hubby and I are moving to Brisbane from Sydney this end of the month, and honestly the amount of people we told about our move who said negative things about Brisbane is appalling. Like why can’t other people just wish us well. It’s so sad of how sometimes people can be so insensitive and rude. I do not know if we are right with our decision, but this is what we find best for us right now. Sydney has become so expensive for us. I just hope Brisbane is not as bad as what all the other people here in Sydney had been telling us. They say Brisbane has the highest crime rate now and full of racists and no sense of culture and boring. Like who the heck wants to hear that when we are about to start our family life in Brisbane! Anyway, reading all the comments here cements our decision to move to Brissy. 🙏🏻
Brisbane and virtually all of QLD has a crime rate through the roof. But if you can get passed that, it is an increbibly beautiful City with lots going on. As well as good job prospects and climate. I lived there for 2 yrs and that was enough for me. But best of luck, if you find a nice area i'm sure you'll love it.
@@Sharpshooter99100 Been living in Brisbane now for more than a month and so far, I love the climate. Sadly, it is true, the crime rate here is really high..it is actually scary. We weren’t able to research well..we are planning to move to a different suburb, hopefully it will be a better one. Living costs is lower than Sydney, and better pay here surprisingly. @@chilloioi I'm sure you'll get on fine. Find a nice suburb and you're all set! I never came across any issues during my time there, and loved it. Only good memories. Came back as the humidity was too much for me. When choosing a suburb bear in mind flood risk too! They've had some bad ones there. Hope you're settling in though it's a nice city. Gotta be positive.
Brisbane is flying but factual error the 1956 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies were held at the MCG so not the first time city has had them so close to a CBD.
I must admit the idea of tearing down the Gabba just to add a few thousand seats seems noncommercial. If possible build a big complex next to it. It would then be a greenfield site with far more potential
One only needs to drive on our evermore congesting roads and motorways to realise the pending gridlock is almost upon us. Drive around any suburban area in Brisbane and the amount of subdivisions springing up can only mean one thing. It will be quicker to walk or bike in the future. Infrastructure is great in the city district but if it's at the expense of suburban living .........?

On the subject of build up not out - this is also fraut with issues. A building housing 2,000 people needs connectivity which planners aren't addressing yet. The car has to be taken out of the equation and other forms of transportation must be considered.

The Gabba actually only holds just over 35k, a lot of people myself included get this wrong. But Jake Anson who is a highly respected lead design architect for the Brisbane Lions actually corrected me on this.

I’m all for the exciting developments. However there is nothing in this that shows how people will get into the city that are 20, 30,50,100 km from the CBD. Brisbane is not just a City on its own, it is fast becoming the South east qld mega city. By 2032 it’s likely that Noosa to the boarder will be 1 big city, some 248km. Put that in context. Melbourne to Albury is 326km and Wollongong to Newcastle is 268 km.There is a lack of infrastructure to get from the north to the south let alone east to west. There was nothing stated regarding the Sunshine Coast rail connection in the recent government announcements regarding the Olympics..
I tried to keep it Brisbane centric for this video, more videos to follow on major projects in the South East. But glad you want more content!

I think a lot of people think these things are because of the Olympics but it's not really accurate. Most of those projects were already in planning or under way long before the Olympics bid. Sure a number of them got an extra push or interest in them because of the Olympics but that's about it. Brisbane Live has been talked about for a very long time but had no movement. The Gabba rebuild/refurb was on the books but just became much bigger. Also maybe a couple of shifts in the transport plans to accommodate but they were already well underway.
Nothing like an Olympics to force 3 levels of Government to work together for a common cause! Not to mention a hard deadline to deliver!

Great summary, definitely exciting stuff in the works. Yeah always more can be done with public transit, dedicated ring route definitely needed along with more major connections north and south. There's such amazing weather here it really would be great to see the city making a real push to get as many people onto bikes and transit and out of cars, especially in those fringe suburbs
Completely agree Matthew, I’m a firm believer that we need to develop up, not endless sprawl. Mass rapid transport needs density to support it.

Bit CBD-centric. Outer suburban living shoudl be considered. Where's the next Springfield? Tunnel to the north west can open up areas past Eaton's hill. Future public transport is more likely to be electric self-driving taxi to bus sized things goign point-to-point rather than trains which mostly need trips either end.

Interesting summary of the works. I have to agree with the underwhelming rebuild of the Gabba. Vulture and Stanley Sts need to be put underground to create a larger footprint. Also need two further green bridges from Kangaroo Point and New Farm as well as New Farm to Hawthorne. Finally the Riverside expressway needs to be removed to unite the western side of the city to the river and remove a terrible 70s eyesore.
Agreed. The Gabba doesn't need to be as big as the MCG but needs to have at least 70-80k seats.
The Gabba is a huge opportunity for Brisbane. I agree that a potential solution is to put Vulture St, Stanley St and the Riverside expressway underground. Maybe it can be converted to Brisbane's version of the New York High-Line?

A big no on the double stadium idea. It's just a waste in the long term. I'd bump the Gabba redevelopment size up a bit if at all possible. 54-60,000 capacity.

I grew up in Sydney and spent 13 years in Brisbane - Southeast Queensland will be an absolute monster by 2050 but there is no comparison with Sydney's harbour. The Gold Coast is tacky IMO and the Sunny Coast is a retirement village, but the numbers don't lie - southerners continue to flock to one corner of a huge state. If you saw the Brisbane CBD 30 years ago, you'd understand why some people are excited (and others horrified) by these projects - the genie is definitely out of the bottle.
And Melbourne will be way bigger than Sydney well before then.
@@dazzahoward7104 True, but I doubt that any of them will deal with the population growth. 20 years ago, I told a colleague that the GC would have huge problems with youth crime if they just kept building new suburbs to attract young families and ignoring transport infrastructure but money talks.

Need more and new residential towers and hubs as there is a huge lack of dense housing around transport hubs and rentals are going crazy as everyone migrates from Victoria to QLD

I feel like the Ekka site would be a better place for the new stadium, as the gabba isn't really going to be able to handle the increased volume.
Brisbane has already outgrown the size of Suncorp Stadium - which needs an upgrade
The Gabba Stadium needs to be bigger the 50,000 seats if it wants to be compared or compete with Sydney or Melbourne.
Better infrastructure and Transport needs to be looked at in the suburbs as well and not just in the inner city suburbs.
We have all these new suburbs popping up but there is no public transport infrastructure. They keep harping on about getting cars off the roads and encouraging the public to take public transport but a lot of suburbs don’t have that choice
Agreed, public transport in the outer suburbs is abysmal, and expensive if travelling to inner city everyday, not everyone can afford to buy a home in inner suburbs, where all the great infrastructure is and transport costs are low. There should have already been a railway line out to Beaudesert 30 years ago, apparently there was one once but it was ripped up, not sure. But they definitely need it now.

Great clip Mel:) I think Brisbane needs to go back to that final transapex tunnel from Campbell that wasn’t built from west end across to Toowong and to the western freeway and/or then the other talked about connection north and go up via Stafford to the north. Reason is Main Street and vulture street and that whole area needs to go underground as well if it’s redeveloped for the olympics it’s too congested and will be a bottleneck by 2030’s already is with all the traffic lights. I also question the capacity of the RBWH current busway station to be a metro terminus. So many people will change to suburban busses here and it already seems congested and not everyone today is transferring services so I’m not sure it’s long/big enough. Unsure why they can’t extend the busway from RBWH through to Windsor to at least join the busways at Lutwyche they got out of building that when airport link was all built and Windsor has not much improvement at all and is a missing link in a proper busway north. The metro should then be going all the way to Chermside once the northern transit way opens. I do love your idea of a metro loop in the east and desperately need a bridge if only a green one near Hamilton after KSD was upgraded it needs metro service. So exciting🎉❤😊
I live in South Brisbane and agree, Vulture St near South Bank is definitely far too congested and needs to be fixed as it will only get worse. A tunnel as you've suggested would work well I think. The West End / South Brisbane peninsula is only going to get more built up.
The reason why I love the Brisbane Metro project is its versatility in being able to be expanded. I think over time we'll get connections to Chermside / Carindale and I'd love to see the big chunks of developable land in Morningside / Northshore Hamilton get a metro stop so we can add more affordable inner city apartments onto the market.

As a town planner who has worked on modelling for urban tunnels before (in Brisbane), building road tunnels is a waste of public funding. Remember the other ones (where the finances were released) all went broke and were picked up on the cheap by Transurban. Thousands of retail Mum and Dad investors lost their savings in that ill thought out Ponzi Scheme. I have always maintained that Transapex was a solution in search of a problem. Transapex was always a poorly conceived idea (like the west Brisbane bypass) that will never, ever stack up. The tunnel to Toowong does not have the demand to justify a tunnel, neither when it was conceived, now or 30 years in the future. The Go Between Bridge is sufficient to meet that need as the western suburbs are too small and will never have the population. The Clem 7 was another poorly conceived tunnel that took people from north of where all the jobs are to south of where all the jobs are (and they wondered why nobody used it!).
Plus if you are going to the expense of tunneling, it only makes sense if you then put trains in it as the return from cars is insufficient in the long run. Cross River Rail has the best investment return of all these projects. If we want to dig more tunnels under Brisbane then I suggest and east-west rail tunnel from Cannon Hill to the City and then under West End to Indooroopilly. West End could get its own underground station as well as New Farm/Teneriffe and Balmoral/Bulimba with a new CBD station as well. That would have more long term structural benefit for the city than roads. The Stafford corridor could be used for rail as well. Maximum capacity of a rail corridor is more than double that of a road corridor and has land use uplift benefits as well as stations can support density and mixed use. Most road projects in urban areas lose money in the long run.

Also we need more connections linking our current terminus' or even between the various branches. Imagine a train line that could loop from CBD to Beenleigh and then through to Cleveland and back to the CBD. It would help to decentralise our city, alleviate peak demands and provide a whole new growth corridor away from the traditional branch lines into the city. So many other cities have gone this next step and made their networks truly versatile, it's something Brisbane lacks entirely other than a handful of poorly timetabled bus routes at the moment
@@neumanmachine3781 I’m speaking in terms of Mel’s vision to divert the riverside expressway in his latest video. Only the entrances to the cbd street / exits could be tolled from exits under Southbank and the tunnel under the Gabba and Southbank would have to be free as a replacement to the captain cook bridge and riverside expressway. GBB would also have to become free. The m3 would divert under Southbank and fix hale street all the way to kelvin grove road to eliminate the constant lane changing.
Returning north bank to the people / developers will pay for the road so no toll needed. Your rail solutions are great and I agree with that we need more tunnelling for train metros right across Brisbane but the context of my discussion was fixing the mess of freeway and inner city gridlock we have now by taking that stuff underground in preparation for the 2032 olympics around the Gabba! Gabba area is a nightmare but how else do we fix that without Mel’s bold vision of diverting riverside expressway, , and get the through traffic away from the Olympic stadium!? Underground is the only option I see in that area. It would be awesome!
It never occurred to me to build a brand new state of the art stadium for the Olympics above the new Gabba Station. But I think it's a fantastic idea! The only question is where would the money come from? I'd probably suggest private enterprise. The government certainly doesn't have the money with everything it's paying for.

Glad you mentioned about the silly idea to demo the Gabba and rebuilding it to increase its capacity by only 16%. In addition they are ripping the soul of the heritage EBSS next door. Gabba and Suncorp were built in the wrong location, it's time to realize this. 2 bridges have been built to allow access to the suncorp from Roma and Milton stations. The Gabba needs a bridge to connect the Station to the stadium. How smart! I agree, the new stadium should be over the Gabba station.

Preference for the Capalaba connection…I think it’s imperative and truthfully going as far as Victoria Point or Redland Bay is really what is needed now and in years to come.
Agree with the comment on Gabba size. Needs to be 60 to 65k ... something like Allegiant Stadium. Build it up ... the cut out section that opens up could face the city, making an awesome view.
Trying to get fruit and veggies at 7pm is a nightmare. Not many supermarkets open. also the gabba is not the closest venue to host olympics. The MCG is only 600 metres from the CBD and hosted the games.

A second, 70,000 seat stadium right next door to the Gabba? Plus Lang Park for rectangular sports? One of them would become a white elephant. Sydney tried that with Homebush and most sports don't want to use it except for the occasional major event (Origin, Grand Final etc). 60,000 works for Perth, 50,000 works for Adelaide, 50,000 is probably a good size for Brisbane. Unless you're talking about building the new one and then demolishing the old one later, fair enough. But keeping both long term is not going to work.
I think this is actually the way to go. Following Olympics, demolish the current gabbe and turn it into the green space they have proposed for over the CRR station along with maybe reinstating the east Brisbane as could be a win win for everyone then and no displacement of Cricket or AFL during construction 👌

A defining characteristic of world cities is public transport, If Brisbane wants to grow any further our governments need to look into more trains and buses with dedicated busways or else we will end up with economically crippling traffic. An issue with Brisbane is a focus on cars, evidence of this can be found on the M1 motorway where work has been done to widen the highway to 10 lanes from Rochedale to Mount Gravatt. At first this seemed to be a good decision but after a while induced demand set in and those 10 lanes didn't seem enough. This is a fatal feedback loop that can be witnessed in any major US city known as induced demand and it seems Brisbane is about to fall victim.
In case you were wondering what induced demand is, We realize that we need more lanes because the traffic doesn't flow fast enough so "what can we do?" ; we build more lanes, and the road seems less busy so more people end up driving so we build even more lanes. If we want to be a world class city we need to ditch cars but at the same rate our government needs to build better public transport to facilitate the increase of demand and the transition away from private transport.
Hopefully some of the congestion gets taken away from the Lang Park area around Caxton St and Roma St for big events. Those detours 😤
I think we're good with the 50000 seater Gabba.

When we compare the cost of the Las Vegas new Stadium (70k pax) to the Gabba redevelopment, QLD Government are definitely getting themselves into a bad deal.
Agree with your suggestion re the Gabba ... build another stadium above the transport station next door.

I would like to see the government develop towns and cities more southerly towards the bottom of the country where there's less UV and cooler temperatures. We don't need to make big cities bigger, we need to make more cities and offer more places to live.
It’s the people deciding to move to Brisbane. People are choosing big cities due to the amenity. QLD is already the most decentralised state, however people are flocking to the south east corner.
@@melpikos8533 Yeah I used to live in south east QLD, it's a nice region. There is massive amounts of town development there if you have a look at the waterways it's all heavily curated and Robina specifically they've build thousands of homes, a stadium, hospital, school, mall and businesses in over the last 20-30 years.
But we'll continue having the worlds highest cancer rates if we carry on living in cities that we built in extremely UV exposed locations. Not to mention high energy costs to cool things down in the harsh summers.
Places like Albany WA, Busselton WA, Hobart, Lauceston, Regional victoria imo are more ideal to live, but whether the region can sustain millions of people would require significant initial investment.
Lets build another casino ! We can always use more to bleed the community.
I think they should rebuild the stadium but increase the capacity to maybe 70-80,000 capacity.

Hi Mel - great video - thanks. Do you see any benefits to the outer suburbs in the North of Brisbane I.e. your Kenton’s to Chermside, Ashley etc? A lot of the projects would enhance the suburbs in the South by the looks of it?
I think the vast majority of projects in Brisbane definitely benefit the south side of the river. There has been more availability of big chunks of land on the south to allow these big projects to be delivered. I also think proximity to the Gold Coast means that the South will outperform the North.

There are definitely some impressive projects and the city does seem like it's improving rapidly.. the only thing I feel that sort of holds it back is how small the CBD is. It's about half the size of Sydney and Melbournes and on a world scale it's a very small city centre.. I guess the south bank area could become more of extension of the CBD...
Even more reason to ensure our city expands up, not sideways! Still plenty of developable land in the city to ensure our future growth as well as making it very walkable.
How many of these projects will be on time and within budget?
My guess is none will come in under budget, just like every renovation and house build, ever 😂
The whole of the South Eastern Suburbs of Greater Brisbane has been overlooked for years and is in desperate need of public transport infrastructure yet you would happily deny Capalaba a bus link in favour of an already over serviced inner suburbs loop.

btw gabba is only 30,000 it was full packed last week it only went to 30,000 in the capacity count
