  • Fletch continues his regional tour of NSW and visits Yass where three locals are only too happy to share the story of their classic toys.
First is Colin with his 1976 VK Charger that he has painstakingly restored, not precisely to the original model specs, more to his want. Originally a Mist Green it now sports a Vitamin C Orange finish. The previous owner's handy work had resulted in over 100 rust spots that needed to be removed, in addition to Colin's modifications. The result is beautiful, and luckily with a bit of grunt work, he could retain the original interior. Colins still gets the chant 'Hey Charger' as he drives around Yass and says driving the Charger revives memories of his youth and feels so good.
Next, up is Greg, who has an impressive shed to house his Cooper collection, which includes a 1957 Cooper Race Car - purchased by Greg's father when he was 14, a BMW Supercharger and a Morris Cooper S Sedan. Greg's interest in cars started when he followed his father into the trade as a motor mechanic, and he has loved cars and motor racing ever since. The Cooper S sedan was purchased locally for just $100, and a complete rebuild is underway with many of the parts missing.
In the corner of the shed, Fletch spots a very rare 1914 Hupmobile, the story behind this one is fascinating. The original owner stored the vehicle packed with hay to protect it on his property before he went off to war. Sadly he didn't return, the car was found in the '60s, and it's now another project for Greg. Fletch asked Greg, 'What does he enjoy most about his shed?' He replied 'It's a place to come and do the things I want to do - not the things others want me to do'.
Kerry and his wife Ruth have a beautiful retirement setup with their home and a big shed for Kerry's toys just outside Yass. Pride of place in the shed is a 1949 Singer 1200 CC overhead cam British sports car of the period. Kerry admits it wasn't his first choice at a local clearance sale as it was in pieces. But as he considered it, he became more interested in the task of a full restoration. Today the renovation is complete, and he says 'It's very satisfying driving a car that you have fully rebuilt yourself.''

I just love that Charger you showed. With just 20,555 VK's made and just 1,625 of them Chargers makes that gorgeous car a very rare beast.

I sold my 4 speed 265 VK Charger years ago. What a great car it was. The missus couldn't cope with wrestling the baby capsule in and out and the mortgage couldn't wait. I wish I still had it every day. Col's car is a beautiful example of the marque.

Hi Simon, thanks for your comment. Sad to hear you had to get rid of your 265 VK Charger but happy to hear you had fun with it while owning it! Do you currently own any other muscle cars? - Andres.

@@ShannonsInsurance Thanks so much for your reply Andres. Unfortunately my circumstances haven't allowed me to regain the pinnacle of car ownership I once enjoyed. For me, it wasn't about muscle cars per se though. My parents started my Mopar dreaming while I was in high school when they bought a VF sedan. In my surfing days, I had an AP6 wagon and later a VG Regal wagon. The AP6 was a very close second to the Charger as being my best car ever, so strong and durable with a beautifully sculptured front end. The VG was the height of luxury for me but a combination of dirt tracks to surf spots and the infamous poorly designed power steering system caused chassis problems I couldn't contend with at the time. Having worked at a customs clearance house which dealt with importing cars in the last decade, I still dream of shipping a 1979 Chrysler 300 Hurst Edition from the States to replace my Charger. Funny how, over time, that would work out being at least 50% the cost of buying a VK Charger today. However, it won't happen due to all the forces in my life. I'm moving to Thailand when air travel without quarantine resumes. There, I hope to restomod a Mazda Familia pickup with either a 12B or convert it to electric, as is the Thai current fad. That will be after I convert the Yamaha RX135 my brother-in-law gave me to a cafe racer. I love to dream about cars and you, Fletch and Shannons give me plenty of material here on CZcams. Thanks again.

No worries at all Simon, thanks for sharing your experience with us. The charger sounds like it would've been a dream to drive, they're very strong and I personally love the front of them, even the brand new ones!. Moving to Thailand sounds great, you'll definitely enjoy the experience and if you're able to convert the Mazda into electric, then you'll have heaps of power there 😅 Please feel free to share with us when you convert the Mazda and the Yamaha, we love seeing our customers modifying their rides and driving them. Hope you're well and stay safe Simon! - Andres.

My late father had a Singer the same as Kerry's long before I was born. Iremember him telling me he got his money's worth out of his NRMA membership when he owned. Apparently Diffs were an issue. A couple of times apparently one of the rear wheels along with part of the axle would suddenly come out snd try and overtake the car.

Fletch. You should include Steve Brook and his great shed in one of your shows. Great shed. Great bloke. Australian Champion F Ford early 80’s. He also drove a JPS BMW 6 Series at Bathurst with World Champion Danny Hulme for Frank Gardner. His wife makes a mean fruit cake for him EVERY week that he has in his shed. See if she can make an extra one for you to take home mate. And his daughter has her own YT Channel but no way does it include cara. LOL. Hawkesbury area. Send me a message if you want his mobile number.

.......but could you imagine an HT Monaro (worth $90,000) being left on the street because the owner can't house it? I'd be worried about theft, the elements and other cars side swiping it.
I think Shannon's logic is sound.
