- Today I delve into the world of modern modulation pedals. There are so many amazing modulation effects out there that do everything from classic sounds to previously unheard-in-this-world sounds. I show you some of my favorites and my favorite settings on them. In the comments below, tell me your favorite pedal from today and something I may have missed that you love! Also, let me know what you think about "Good At Falling" and tell me about a record that you think uses modulation in a really creative way.

No love for ada flangers 😢.
When are you gonna make a flanger?
At 11:38 - That riff reminds me of Dear Prudence.
Josh, ever think about doing a video of your go-to pedal board? With the huge collection of pedals you have, I'd be interested to know which ones you use on the regular.
Does jhs have a sponsored or company cycling team? Because if not, can I start a totally unauthorized one?
@@wraith1977 Yes This Please!
But what if we DO want 30 min episodes?! Please?
I'm with the moose.
I also would enjoy 30 minute episodes.
If That Pedal Show can have ninety-minute episodes, JHS can definitely go over thirty (though it would be a lot more work, as these are more heavily scripted and edited).
@@xdoctorblindx Nah, Josh is just a natural ))
I'd like a couple to be 30 minutes but not every single video has to be 30 minutes
When he said we don’t want 30 min episodes that hit me.
I’d joyfully watch a full length feature film every Thursday
Also known as "That Pedal Show". :)
Agreed!
Man, if we had that, TPS, and then the Chasing Tone and/or Tone Mob podcasts, it'd be nonstop gear all week.
Anyone who is married or in a long-term relationship, tell me this doesn't sound wonderful. Our parents had their sheds and sewing machines (yes, yes I know - "stereotypes are terrible!" Blah blah get over yourselves, you know who you are) to keep themselves sane and have a bit of personal space, we have the online gearhead community and endless content.
Although we are supposed to be *musicians* as well...
Kyle Patterson a good chunk of those episodes are them babbling on and on, Andy gets to the point quicker
I SO wholeheartedly agree with this!!! This is my Goldilocks gear channel!!! Never boring, not too over the top, the demos are great and never too long. Josh is super knowledgeable yet humble about it; great sense of humor, too. Sarcasm and self-deprecation are the key to my heart! (I grew up watching Conan.) I would definitely watch a 30 min vid every week. Outtakes and bloopers would be excellent, too!
Josh is awesome. He is sort of a Mr. Rogers of guitar pedals. I mean that in the most positive way. 🤘
A grown man dancing with a guitar playing Sweet Home Alabama while wearing a Alpe d'Huez shirt is Transparency Incarnate. My utmost respect to you, Sir! Great video also...
Who the F says we don't want 30 minute episodes!!!!????????
SHOW YOURSELVES!!!!
It wasn’t Me!
Today is Tubescreamer day! It's 8.08
Oh that's so perfect. I received my TS mini today in the mail!
@@ChaitanyaBhagwatChai Happy New pedal day!
Congrats

@@Amptender and they released headphones
Can we get Josh some type of award for this series? It's become apart of my weekly routine - thanks Josh and JHS!
I DO WANT 30 MIN EPISODES!!! Even 45...You're such a good entertainer and storyteller. Combined with your knowledge I can watch your show for hours. Perhaps a Sovtek special? ;-) That can't be under three quarters of an hour...
I third that notion
I think he's waiting on Half Life 3 to come out before releasing the Sovtek MIG episode.
I am not a keyboard player by any means but I have always been interested in how modern keyboard players use modern effects. I’d be interested in a show on pedals that go well with keyboards.
Make videos 30 min again!
Keep me busy while I’m at work!
You're fired! Hahahahaha!
I second this. Though I watch them at home with huge speakers.
I’m totally loving longer JHS videos. I vote yessireee
Seconded
I head that and was like, "who doesn't want to hear Josh talking for 30 minutes about pedals!?!"
Me: ‘stays up all night watching JHS videos’
JHS the next day: “Yo here ya go”
Phase 90 is one of those. Especially at "subtle" settings - totally astonished by this one-knob piece of gear from 70s. It just brings "THAT" detail to the sound. Amazing.
“I’m not that tall ... yet.” That’s what we in the corporate world call “growth mindset.” Well played.
Finally some Death By Audio love!
"whatch them all, over and over" That has become my life, thanks Josh..
Brand new The Japanese House fan here, because of this video Josh. She's incredible
I dig the Boss MO-2! Thanks for reminding me that Boss makes great stuff. Boss is boss!
Can’t wait to watch this after work! My favorite guitar video series
Your love of pedals is = to my love of pedals and my love for this channel
Man I really love your videos, no matter if I’m having a good or bad day these videos always put me in a good calm mood no matter what. Keep up the great videos and amazing pedals!
Great episodes... This one wasnt my favorite but still love a new jhs Josh ep. Would love to see you and yer drummer jammmmm!
80’s era King Crimson with Adrian Belew. Guitar/Effects wizard, 20 years ahead of his time.
That album is incredible, thank you so much
I wasn't feeling it so much this episode until the BOSS with the arpeggios - that was beautiful.
Could you guys do a video on the technicals of pedals, that would explain how the capacitors and resistors effect the sound of the pedal in different circuits.
Wampler did it on their channel I'm pretty sure. Also I think diyguitarpedals have some good resources on that topic on their channel.
That's really a basic course in electrical engineering... And everything gets more complicated when you start comparing digital and analog pedals :0
you might want to check out Uncle Doug. He is really all about vintage tube amps, but he has a lot of interesting general info on circuits/components. czcams.com/video/l-u8J-yh9ZA/video.html
I think this is a great idea considering JHS makes so entertaining videos
Brian Wampler of Wampler Pedals has some really informative videos on circuits that you might find worth your while. Every time he pulls out the breadbox my inner nerd gets terribly excited.
The guitar is ultra cool! Love the dark wood neck and body color! Keep rockin' the spectacular videos, Josh!
Love her new record!! Thanks for introducing her to me. The latest Foals album has some awesome modulation on that.
That Old Blood Noise Endevours absolutely blew me away! What a phenomenal sound!
I love how this guy knows exactly what to play to bring out the best in every setting of these pedals.
Would love an episode on pedals where you can use multiple types of modulation simultaneously (e.g., Amptweaker Swirlpool, Crazy Tube Circuits Stoned Hz, Red Witch Medusa
, etc.). Thanks as always for a great episode!
This is an older episode, but I wanted to comment, I will completely watch a 30 minute episode. Also, that boss sounded freaking awesome.
As always, great vids! Keep it up! One of these days I’ll get me a JHS pedal.
Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water K-Field Modulator. Favorite mod pedal. Similar results can be had from line 6 tape eater or warble-matic effects.
Great video Josh
Warped vinyl is insane, it evoked an old memory for me which is insane.
One of my favorite episodes. I love modulation. I like the warped vinyl but all those dip switches makes for a complicated time. I would like one with a little screen doing a personal light show, so inspiring.
A strat!!! YEEEEEEEEAH!!!! The best notification of CZcams is the new episode of JHS Pedals Vlog.
Favorite Modulation: Tame impala
Also been super into Japanese house since you introduced them to me. Bought tickets today to see her!
Hey, I'm surprised Fairfield Circuitry's Shallow Water didn't at least get an honorable (sic) mention. Also, given that you hung around the ring mod end of the spectrum with the DBA pedal, maybe their (FC's) Randy's Revenge should've made the cut too/instead.
Anyway, I was distracted by your Alpe d'Huez tee-shirt throughout, as Marco Pantani's and Claudio Chiappucci's lone breakaway victories on that stage remain the two greatest sporting moments I've witnessed in this lifetime (drug cheats or not).
Oh, and thanks for making me have to buy that Matthews pedal which literally has my name on it. As if the Fulltone one wasn't enough!
Ulric von Catalyst I don’t think he’s ever mentioned Fairfield Circuitry and it kinda bugs me because everything they make is top notch but I don’t feel like he’s purposely not mentioning them. Hopefully someone can put some FC pedals in his hand!
Love these videos! The rainbow thing was sick!!!
I for one would love 30 min episodes. I live for these vids they are amazing
My favorite modulation pedal is The “Julia” By Walrus Audio.
The chorus on it is really lush and nice and the vibrato is really good. Also love the Echo Dream because of how Wonderful and strange it is to me.
Both are great pedals.
I really like the way you explain things more slowly. Even though I'm Brazilian and my English is very beginner, I can understant almost everything you say. Thanks.
That MO-2 sounds great! I've never heard about it before
I'm a big time univibe/chorus/ vibrato junkie and recently got the Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl HiFi in a trade. I'm completely in love with that pedal! It's my first Chase Bliss pedal and I definitely need to check more of them out.
Favorite pedal was Joels "Warped Vinyl" .WOW! I'm impressed ... love the warp knob.
There is just nothing better than JHS videos!!!!
How about doing some moog pedals review? There is a ton of stuff there with moogerfoogers and 104m delay beeing one of the best. ever. My humble opinion.
2nd you there mate
The magic switch on the Rainbow Machine sounds like something out of The Dark Crystal. Love it.
I love these episodes I've never seen the atmosphere pedal but I know I need it asap
Josh. These pedals are not my style, but I would watch 2 hour episodes. Screw the haters!
Love the MO-2, totally a secret that no one seems to know about. I use it on a subtle setting almost as an always-on pedal.
Sounds the best to me... Way more useful than the other introduced pedals on this vid. But Bedroom Players won't agree.
I really enjoy All of Your Pedal Videos..!
Dude, I think it's WAY kewl that you review pedals *OTHER THAN* your own. What businessman *DOES* that??? Mega-Props!
I'm pretty old school, my favorite modulation pedals are my '75 MXR Phase 90, my '80s ElectroHarmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress flanger, my 2000's Dunlop UniVibe, and my Boss CH-1 Super Chorus. Honorable mention goes out to my 2000's Alesis Nanoverb - which has the 'chewiest' chorus I've ever heard - but I mainly use it for delay in the effects loop of my amp.
Thanks for all your informative posts - much appreciated!
Dang man, when you got to the honorable mentions I was really expecting the Ibanez PM7. You have all those toneloks behind your head haha. That's been the only modulation pedal that has survived me selling stuff off time and time again. I've had it 15 years, still going strong and still on my board.
What a cool record mate...
love it.
for the record, I and everyone I know would love thirty minute episodes!!!!!! i like the EHX pitch fork on the detune setting. its sounds amazing as a really light chorus effect. ive been using the deadbeat modulationstation lately after the episode you did on how you record a song. i bought the whole series haha
Great channel! Cheers from Brazil!
Instant Queen ”Get down make love” sounds from the Rainbow Machine! Awesome! ❤️🇸🇪
The Boss multi overtone sounds amazing. And the first riff for that demo is Josh's best yet.
Stadium Arcadium had some of my favorite modulations! I was telling my brother today that it's funny that I can't figure out what they are in recordings, but when I hear them live I can tell exactly what it is!
"The Seven" by Primus is just dripping with cool modulation effects! That and Disintegration by the Cure! That one launched my obsession for Chorus.
Robert did a great job with the SuperMod. The rotary function and harmonic-trem are my favorite! 👍🏻
I had never heard of The Japanese House. Now thanks to you, The Japanese House is playing on *repeat* in my car, I bought the vinyl, and tickets for myself and my wife to see the show in Atlanta. Truly angelic music, in a similar (yet unique) way that School of Seven Bells is. Thanks for the tip!
Tasty episode ! Ahh you did it, i was waiting for the rainbow machine. What a weird one
Cocteau Twins- Heaven of Las Vegas, RIDE- Nowhere, The Cure- Disintegration.
The Rainbow Machine is all over an album called 'Mirror Might Steal Your Charm' by The Garden. Whacked out modulation sounds indeed!
I know you've done a video on cheap overdrives but, I really would like you to do a video on ELITE overdrive pedals. Klon and Dumble style pedals and "transparent" overdrives. Just the best of the best!
Watched this a bit late. Thanks Josh for all the videos that you do. I learn something every time. This time I discovered that nothing that I heard interested me in the slightest. That's not a bad thing at all, it saves me time and saves annoying staff when I want to try out a pedal in a music store. Thanks again!
Not sure if the Miku is considered a modulation pedal, but it is my favourite weirdity. Sadly too expensive to own now.
About time the Boss MO-2 got some love. That's one of their best modern pedals and it has stayed on my board for awhile.
You didn't play it but the Lo Fi Junky is a favorite!
Love my Strymon Flint on the '61 Harmonic Tremolo setting. Album: Adrian Belew's "Twang Bar King". In an interview, Belew described his modulation effects as "an embarrassing array of electronic weaponry" which I still find inspirational.
Dear Josh
You are absolutely crazy.
Love you!
💣 ⚡🧡
My new favorite wild modulation pedal is the Old Blood Noise “Excess.” I love that it has distortion and a parallel signal chain. The harmonizing delay is so so much fun especially when you blend in just a little dirt. The chorus mode is classic sounding and nice and I like running it very mildly with crushing gain into it from the dirt side. Just a lovely whacky pedal.
A record that really delights me with its modern modulation approach is "La Di Da Di" by Battles.
Also, I recommend everything Battles.
Great episode! I’ve been diggin my line6 space chorus on the tri mode that I got for $15. Also I wouldn’t mind 30min episodes!
I need that Chase Bliss warped vinyl sounds like it would perfectly correct my faulty playing !
I love the Walrus Audio Julia. Does great going from chorus all the way to vibrato. Also have a '90s Danelectro Cool Cat 18v that I still love for some reason.
Hey Josh - great vid (as usual) - I also LOVE modulation pedals - My first was an original Small Stone (still works!) and have built from there. I loved the Boss pedal you played! Don't know if its not "new" enuf, but the EHX Stereo Electric Mistress lets you easily blend chorus and flange - I love the sound. Also, you should check out (if you haven't yet) the Spira from Korora Audio - its based on the "Shepherd Tone" an audio illusion akin to a spinning barber pole - the modulation keeps rising (or descending - footswitchable) seemingly infinitely rather than sweeping up and down like "old-school" modulators! Its a real kick! Thanks again for another vid!
Nice! Those are some funky pedals
I have a vortex flanger by tc electronic and with my band, i sometime just turn the knob of the pedal to make inredible sound without even playing..I like the sound of the rainbow machine and you didn't talk about banana effects that seems to be great! I really enjoy your episodes!
Just love your videos. By the way the shirts are awesome too. One of my all time favorite modulation pedals is the old TC Electronics Stereo Chorus +. I almost leave the Pitch Modulator on all the time
Good At Falling is my album of the year so far. I've listened to it almost every day.
Woah didn’t expect to see a MO-2 in here haha it’s one of my secret weapons! I use it for organ sounds mainly but it’s super versatile
Your nerdy geekery is mesmerizing. You make great vids.
You made me discover The Japanese House when you reviewed her old stuff, so thanks for that! o/
Josh, trust your instincts. 20 minutes is the perfect episode length. As an MD500 owner I resent anyone who makes me want to buy standalone modulation pedals again so damn you to hell and God bless you for that. That Caroline pedal is instant early Pretenders James Honeyman-Scott. Fantastic.
Great choices! I'm currently loving my Cooper fx Generation Loss as well.
Thanks for the Heads-up on the Dr. Scientist Cosmichorus.👍🏽
Wow, that Somersault pedal was the first one in the video that made me say "yes, I could absolutely make a place for that on my board". That thing sounds great and so usable.
Dude! That Bob Ross hair is rocking. Do you also speak in soothing tones?
@@therealjamespickering at every opportunity!
Rush’s “Signals” album is my favorite modulation album. Lots of great chorus on the guitars and synths.
Favorite pedal from this video, definitely the Warped Vinyl.
My favorite modulation pedal of all time.. which never ever leaves my board for any reason... is the Moog ClusterFlux. That thing is just insane. It does chorus, flange, vibrato, and will even get down into this crazy noisy glitchy delay territory if you use the MIDI in to set the speed super low. It has a ton of control voltage options to use with expression pedals or integrate into a modular synth setup, a pretty expansive set of waveforms for the LFO, will sync with MIDI clock and the speed knob becomes a subdivision control, tap tempo... Seriously badass pedal.
love the reflector chorus!!
boss Overtone was a bit of a revelation! really like that!
Dude awesome video!
Damn you, JHS! I must’ve played Maybe You're the Reason a couple dozen times now. I have never heard of The Japanese House, but I quickly fell down the rabbit hole with they’re music. I’m tortured. Thanks, nice pitch!
I recently found a used v1 emperor at a guitar center and I absolutely love it. I’ve never heard a better chorus with my setup
The Somersault is such an amazing pedal. It really is my favorite chorus pedal I have ever played.
1) warped vinyl
2) warped vinyl MK II
3) warped vinyl HIFI
:)
Alfonso Corace would love a vid by josh on these pedals....I got the hi fI and may get the previous
@@stk7778 It would be great!!! CBA pedals are incredible!
@Douglas Lemus The HIFI is waaay brighter than the other two and has the LAG knob. The MKII (darker kinda 'lo-fi' sound) is a sort of improvement of the mkI, less floor noise, tone knob and the dip-switches are on top :)
A very cool Episode 🤘
I've been listening to the Japanese House constantly since watching your other video. Good recommendation.
