  • As an artist, I understand the challenges of maintaining a consistent daily art practice. That's why I'm excited to share with you some easy and effective techniques that have significantly improved my workflow and creativity.
    In this video, I’ll take you through a sped-up demo of my abstract painting warm-up exercise, which is based on a thumbnail sketch I created a few days ago. Using acrylic paint, I start with a loose background of yellow ochre, titanium white, and Payne’s gray, followed by a touch of cadmium yellow light. This process is an integral part of my daily art practice, as it helps me transition smoothly into a creative mindset.

    I'll discuss two key techniques that are essential for boosting your daily art practice. The first is doing timed thumbnail sketches. Whether you prefer charcoal, pencil, watercolor, or collage, setting a timer for these sketches can immensely aid your artistic development. The second technique involves timed abstract warm-up paintings. I usually opt for 15-minute sessions, but feel free to adjust the duration to suit your needs. Both these exercises are fantastic for overcoming overthinking - a common issue for many artists - and for generating a wealth of ideas for future projects.
    Moreover, these exercises are a brilliant opportunity to experiment with new techniques, colors, tools, and ideas, especially in the realm of abstract art. For instance, the warm-up exercise in this tutorial evolved from a thumbnail sketch idea I wanted to explore further. They are also perfect for loosening up before a more intensive day of art.
    Remember, the most crucial aspect of these exercises, whether it's a thumbnail sketch or an abstract painting warm-up, is to enjoy the freedom of play without the pressure of creating something perfect. Through this tutorial, I hope to inspire you to incorporate these exercises into your daily art practice, helping you to grow and evolve as an artist. Join me in this artistic journey and let's create something wonderful together!
    Keep on painting!

    Yep ! It's a Hamburger. But a good one, No cow died. Love your work and so does my cat Freckles. When you asked what do we do everyday, I watch you right now. I also like to take my camara with me when ever I leave the house, and look through the lens and find all kinds of cool stuff when I cut out the rest of chaos. Peace

    Funny, what you saw is not what I saw until you said what you saw, then I could see what you saw.
    Happy New Year. Thank you so much for your continued sharing, advice and encouragement. I know it is not an insignificant amount of effort to create, edit and post videos.
    I am currently in quilting mode. I find it difficult to both paint and quilt at the same time, it's always one or the other. Each influences the other, but I am kind of a messy painter and I would be very, very unhappy to get paint on a quilt. Luckily I have a designated space for each and don't have to switch back and forth in one area.
    Again, happy New Year.

      Thank you for your kind words, Sybil. I was thinking sunset for the longest time, but when I returned to it later I saw a hamburger (maybe I was just hungry)😂
      That's quite understandable not wanting to get paint on your quilts. It sounds like you have a nice setup for keeping them separate.
      Happy New Year!

    Hey Chris! I also saw a sunset and later the hamburger. I'm really glad you talked, and showed us your process for loosening up. I especially like that these were timed so that there's SOME structure to it so that I can play but not get lost. It feels like a safety net for me. I'm excited to try my hand with these!! I also have a question regarding displaying works on paper. I don't really like pieces that are matted. Do you ever display your pieces in other ways, and if so how? Thanks and Happy New Year!

    • @chrisloudart
      @chrisloudart  Před 6 měsíci

      Hey Pam-thank you! I've always been a big fan of painting with a time limit.
      I typically mat my paper paintings, but I've also fixed them to cradled wooden panels, which looks really nice in my opinion. I've also seen paper paintings that were centered and fixed directly to a backer board, I liked the look, but I've never displayed any of mine that way yet. I occasionally see some that are displayed as is, but I don't feel mine would look good that way. Do you have any best practices for displaying?

      We’re just getting started. I have learned a couple of things but at the moment she’s just reviewing different techniques for making collage paper which I’m pretty comfortable with already. I’m looking forward to some more advanced composition information. I.e. getting the eye to travel the page. Etc. Some of my problem i have determined is the scale of the pieces used. I’d liked your spontaneous combining of paint with collage pieces right over it. I do some watercolor, and would like to give that a try after I see what the full ten-day course turns into. Just takes time and practice. Thanks for asking.

    umbelievable as at the first contact with oil i could make such a work .. i copied the same painting in bigger size on a canvas still in my possession .. when i coukd see Dali' s paintings at Figueras i eas shocked by the crude strikes he did and when u see reproduction on books the paintings looks smooth neat as a picture

      @chrisloudart  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey Robin! A thumbnail sketch is a small, rough drawing, painting, or mixed-media piece that's typically pretty basic and lacking in detail. They're great for generating ideas and playing with composition. I use them for warm-ups and the initial step in the creative process, so you can explore concepts and arrangements before moving on to a larger piece. Mine are 3” x 3” squares, but I've seen them smaller and larger than that. Here's a video I did on doing thumbnail sketches czcams.com/video/CDk7JlvQpjA/video.html
