I have lived in a Muslim community for 10 years and have always had a dog. I am a single father and many of my Muslim neighbors bring me food and when my daughter plays with their daughters they treat her as their own. But yes, they hate dogs.

I am a Muslim and I love dogs. I can't have them as pets but that doesn't mean I hate them. I make an effort to feed the strays in my area. I pet them when I see them on streets and when I come home, just clean myself and wear clean clothes before I pray. It really should not be a matter of debate as Quran says to be kind to all living creatures, but alas so many of my fellow Muslims have so many misconceptions.

I have classmates who were also Muslims and they're great friends of mine. They told me the reason why they avoid and fear that a dog will sniff or lick them. Part of it was the impurity it brings, and it was told to them that the part of their body which was sniffed or licked at disappears once they started their journey towards the afterlife.

i’m muslim but the last part is not true. the reason we avoid dogs is because the saliva invalidates our ablution (the washing of our bodies before we pray) and we believe it is impure. some of us do like dogs it’s just that we avoid them for our purity :)

I raised 11 cats and then got bitten, got alergic to their hairs. Then got a lovebird that loved me more than anyone and i loved him more. I had him when i was depressed had no family, mother passed away, no friends. A cat came in home & ate him. I wanted to kill that cat soooo badly but i didn't. My mom was the one who told me that even if we can't pet them our religion taught us to love animals including dogs. So every 2 months i have to make sure to keep dogs food with me when i go out in case i find any dogs that are hungry. We love dogs but its just we can't keep them.

The thing that freak westerners is that dogs are not just other simple animals but the very definition of a companion domesticated animal. Not having an animal companion in home with the family left the animal without a purpose and that is extremely weird. Also dogs are the only animal that can understand human behaviour and react with it. The dog is clean. It's just the saliva of dog that is very unclean and unhealthy. The reason we don't touch the dog is because it licks itself and the saliva is all over it's body. But you can touch or pet a dog over it's head cause that's where it's tongue won't reach. But it's okay to touch a dog if it's washed and you're sure that it didn't itself on that part after wash. U can certainly have a dog just that it's not allowed inside home cz it licks all over the place. But it's very important to be kind towards it.

I raised 11 cats and then got bitten, got alergic to their hairs. Then got a lovebird that loved me more than anyone and i loved him more. I had him when i was depressed had no family, mother passed away, no friends. A cat came in home & ate him. I wanted to kill that cat soooo badly but i didn't. The thing that freak westerners is that dogs are not just other simple animals but the very definition of a companion domesticated animal. Not having an animal companion in home with the family left the animal without a purpose and that is extremely weird. Also dogs are the only animal that can understand human behaviour and react with it. Treating a dog like a cow, a sheep or any other animal is just wrong, they need to be treated in a specific better way.

The dog is clean. It's just the saliva of dog that is very unclean and unhealthy. The reason we don't touch the dog is because it licks itself and the saliva is all over it's body. But you can touch or pet a dog over it's head cause that's where it's tongue won't reach. But it's okay to touch a dog if it's washed and you're sure that it didn't itself on that part after wash. U can certainly have a dog just that it's not allowed inside home cz it licks all over the place. But it's very important to be kind towards it.
