As a Brazilian, there is nothing shocking about this. I've gotten used to being called a "Monkey" online by spanish speaking south americans, especially Argentinians. Racism and prejudice in the latino community is more ingrained than a lot of americans think, its just hidden because everyone born south of the border is labeled as a "minority".

We’d like to think that it is common knowledge that anti-blackness is a global phenomenon but unfortunately, the targeted white-washing of known history has prevented that. History has been white-washed so severely that often, the extent of racism across the world is masked. The country that has been most ‘successful’ in white-washing its population, history and culture is Argentina. Argentina is considered the whitest country in South America, which is odd considering that, like Brazil, they were colonized and subjected to Spanish colonists shipping in African slaves from the West Coast of the African continent. Currently, Argentina’s population of European ethnicity constitutes 97% of the population - this is a disturbing figure taking into account that by the late 1700s nearly 50 percent of the population in the interior of the country was black, and between 30 and 40 percent of the population of Buenos Aires was black or mulatto. When asked about Afro-Argentines, most Argentineans believe that Argentina never took part in the slave trade or that the Afro-Argentines left Argentina “naturally”. Both of these theories are wrong.
What actually happened to Black Argentineans is so disturbing and inhumane, it would be shocking that it wasn’t being taught in classrooms if the world wasn’t so inherently racist. It is widely reported that president of Argentina from 1868 to 1874, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, undertook a ‘covert genocide’ that wiped out the Afro-Argentinean population to the point that by 1875, there were so little Black people left in Argentina that the government didn’t even bother registering African-descendants in the national census.

I am Argentine, in our country throughout history politicians tried to eliminate the black part of the population, as well as many Latin American countries, except that Argentina was the only country that really did it, for example, in the war of the triple alliance, Uruguay, Argentina and even Brazil, put black people to fight on the front lines and in the most difficult battles. Many black people died in those battles, it was the bloody war in South America, so the Afro-descendant and African-American male population dropped too much, making black women with children, single or with families, start working in the houses of the bourgeoisie, white and rich men had affairs with these employees, or some even married for love, only when they began to have children they were obviously born mestizo, and little by little the country went from having a 30 to 40% black population to have only 1% today. In Argentina we are mostly white or MESTIZO due to history, the population never had real contact or representatives of the black population, so the racism created by status and politicians began to grow, since skin color was related with social and economic position. society never had to really meet people with other religions or appearances, until 1980-2022, where the country received many people from bolivia and asia, and as I said before the skin color had a lot to do with it, since black people were related to the lower class, even white or mestizo people were called black for being poor, what I'm getting at is that I associate Bolivian people with all this, poverty ect, and although Asians were also obviously discriminated against, they never They were called poor, and I think it is because of the color of their skin. As a white Argentine person, I recognize that there is a lot of internalized racism, I say this because if you ask an Argentine if he is racist, he will answer no, but when he sees a black or poor person, his head automatically relates these ideals. I think that as a country we have not had an obligation to have this conversation, because the problem was never that "big" since there was never really immigrant or native representation until now. We do not believe that politicians represent us, because there has never been a good one, but it is because of these types of people that we never move towards a more inclusive and united country

about the whole "emerging from the jungle" thing -- you actually have to be pretty smart to survive in a jungle, let alone thrive. the jungle is not an easy place in which to live. all kinds of deadly plants, snakes, bugs, etc., not to mention animals like jaguars. and if you step on some thing sharp, like a thorn, for example, you have to know which plants can be used as an anti-septic.
so actually, any people or group of peoples who make a place like a jungle their home are any thing BUT primitive. it takes a lot of smarts, a lot of knowledge, a lot of ingenuity and a certain amount of sophistication to live in such a dangerous place. and not for nothing, but we all came from rough beginnings. there were no cities when the earth first formed, after all. some people are just so stupid.

Hardly a decade goes by without them defaulting on, or asking to renegotiate, their national debt. I think Brazil has a somewhat better economic reputation than Argentina. The Argentines might be more "European" than other Latin American countries but that is only because they wiped out their native population in a genocide even more thorough than ours. Little late to the game here but the worst part is that Fernandez actually misquotes Mexican poet Octavio Paz. The original line was: "Mexicans are descended from the Aztecs, the Peruvians from the Incas, and the Argentines...from the boats". It was a stab at our perceived superiority when in fact we have no ties to the land other than being immigrants. It's amazing how words of self-reflection are bastardized to one's own end. I weep for my country.
