  • One Macro Tip - Description
    Exactly as the title states. This short video is one macro photography tip. But it is one powerful tip that will surely boost the interest in your studio macro photography (specifically, bug photography). To follow up on the tip you will have one small DIY job to take care of, but it is very easy, if a little dangerous (sharp knives and explosive adhesives), and that is all I am saying.

    ME & MY GEAR
    When in the studio I use the Nikon D850 as my main camera - amzn.to/3zEznWK
    With my 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom - my favorite video and portrait lens - amzn.to/3zzaoUy
    Other cameras that are used as needed include a Nikon D7500 - amzn.to/371KoFe
    A Nikon D3400 for emergencies - amzn.to/3xbwXgu
    A Fujifilm XT-2, with a battery grip - amzn.to/3l3Agnw
    Without any Fuji glass, I use a TS adapter from Kipon and any Nikkor lens I like - it is an awesome TS adapter - amzn.to/2Vikjze
    I use Audio Technica shotgun microphones in the studio, - amzn.to/3iQLNnv
    but I also have a Pro Caster from Australian mic-maker Rode - amzn.to/3rDPqkx
    who also make my DSLR microphone - amzn.to/3iTxfU6
    and my wireless microphone system - amzn.to/371C8oD
    I record all my sound separately onto the awesome Zoom H5 Digital Audio Recorder. - amzn.to/3BM8aTG
    I forgot to mention my trusty GoPro Hero 8 Black, complete with the Media Mod for on the go video - amzn.to/2UScm3J & amzn.to/3l3Desa
    That is just some of the stuff I use - if you have any questions about my macro gear, or my recording equipment, just ask.
    All my audio, music and sound effects comes for Epidemic Sound - I have been with them for about 3 years and they are pretty awesome - www.epidemicsound.com
    All the photography you see on my channel, in my videos and on my website, was done by me. I tell you that so that you know I would never blame another photographer for my photographic mediocrity. But I love taking pictures, so I do.

    Great sense of humor there Allan and a wonderful DIY set up, I made a similar display / holder using a piece of close cell foam a few year back and your quite right about it really working well./ Keep on clicking Allan.

    Okay, sorry to post twice, but had to after trying your tip Allan. Cut a 2.5” x 2.5” piece of 1/4” thick cork flooring. Glued right-angle supports to bottom. Sent a 0-pin through, bent and glued to Margined Shining Leaf Chaser (beetle), pulled back, arranged feet. Composed under microscope, photographed. Dang if it didn’t make a huge improvement in presenting the subject as life like. I’ve wanted to be a Patreon supporter to one of the number of photographers I follow, but couldn’t decide which one. Happy to say you’re the one. Thanks again.

    Thanks for the wonderful idea. I have also tried leaves on top of the foam.

    • @AllanWallsPhotography
      @AllanWallsPhotography  Před 2 lety +1

      Great point - I meant to say that - you can use anything strips of bark, leaves, anything really, and the foam will hold it stable.

  • @keithdowsett1352
    @keithdowsett1352 Před 2 lety +1

    Cut a thin sliver of bark, make a tiny hole for the pin with a scalpel point and attach it to the foam for a more natural look.

    • @AllanWallsPhotography
      @AllanWallsPhotography  Před 2 lety

      See above! Yes - you are spot on and I meant to point out you can cover it with anything. The point is, use something to provide that context.

    Allan, You mentioned that you have a lot of older shots that you don’t consider very good by your current standards. I think it would be a good series to go through some of them and do a self critique-what you think is wrong, what you would do to make them better. For many of us that are getting started this sort of video would be extremely valuable. It could be an on going series that could pull in more people and lead them into the more advanced topics. No sense all of making the same mistakes.

      Yikes! That sounds like misery, but I do see your point. Of course, everything I now know was informed by all of those thousands of awful pictures, but it might be illustrative to show a few of them. I will add it to the list of pending projects and give it some serious thought. I actually have a folder that has a number of subjects that I have photographed every year - not the exact same bug of course - so I have a series of Yellowjackets going back to my first studio image, one from each year. OK. I'll do it.

    I wonder if sand paper would look as effective. Excellent resource Allan thank you for sharing.

    • @AllanWallsPhotography
      @AllanWallsPhotography  Před 2 lety +1

      It would certainly look different - I use all different colors of paper and card, depending on what I'm going for. Will now try sandpaper.

    I have just found your channel and love your videos. As a macro photographer how and were do you sell your images?

    • @AllanWallsPhotography
      @AllanWallsPhotography  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Alan - glad you found the channel and I hope you find it helpful, entertaining, or both! I consider myself a macro photography teacher, more than a working pro, and I have resisted the push to sell my work (it is a time thing - I don't have nearly enough time to do what I do and produce work good enough to sell), I have resisted until now. I am reworking my website and plan to add a small gallery of limited edition prints for sale. I can't tell you any more for now, because I don't know. But when they arrive they will be somewhere on www.allanwallsphotography.com. Thanks for asking!
