  • It's finally here, Aputures version of the speedbooster, The Aputure DEC LensRegain!

    People asked for it; Why not combine the Aputure DEC and the Metabones Speedbooster? It would be the perfect combination to have both wireless follow focus, wireless camera control and focal reduction in one adapter. Aputure listened to us and accepted the challenge, and now one year later, the product is ready. And it’s even less expensive then the Metabones Speedbooster!
    Here is a link to where you can buy the DEC Lens Regain (EF mount) for the best price and it’s safe: www.bhphotovid...
    The Aputure DEC LensRegain is both a focal reducer (speedbooster), adapter, wireless follow focus, wireless aperture control and start/stop recording. The LensRegain adapter makes your full frame lenses and APS-C lenses work on micro four thirds cameras like the GH4 and the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera. The special glass inside the LensRegain adapter concentrates the light from full frame and APS-C lenses with a focal reduction of 0.75x, which makes the lenses look more like they should do and in addition you get one more stop of aperture. So my Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 turns into a f1.2 lens with the LensRegain adapter, and that’s perfect for shooting in low light.
    Wether you shoot with a tripod or handheld with a shoulderrig, you can easily mount the remote controller with the included claw clip. On both the remote controller and the adapter there is a led panel that shows the exposure and focal length. In addition of wireless follow focus you also have the option to set digital focus marks. It will make the perfect focus change for you.
    A great way to use the DEC Lens Regain is when shooting on a steadycam since you shouldn’t touch the camera while filming with it. Since the DEC is wireless, it’s solves the problem. In addition it’s perfect when operating a jib. A tip when using the wireless follow focus feature is to use a wireless HDMI transmitter like the Aputure ArrayTrans, to send the video signal to a monitor wirelessly. Then a person can operate the focus while watching the monitor. For more information about the Aputure ArrayTrans, see the video I made from IBC Exhibition 2015 here: • IBC 2015 [Aputure DEC ...
    Overall the DEC Lens Regain is a genius product, and if they manage to get the update for controlling the aperture from the camera as well, I don’t see the need of buying a Metabones Speedbooster. And guess what, the Aputure DEC LensRegain costs less then the Metabones Speedbooster, only 598$.

    Andy I want to thank you so so much for videos like this. I have a LUMIX G7 and this combination is definitely what I'm going for as an Aspiring actor and film maker. You give me hope that I'll realize my dreams. I actually was close to getting metabones but I saw they discontinued the one you've been using. (Not the XL) but I am in love with your videos!!! And where you live is beautiful. Thank you again Andy

    This adapter is great! The only deal breaker for me is the fact that at some point you might not be able to change the aperture if the battery dies. To focus and control the aperture wirelessly is great, but if it could work as a wireless remote AND a standalone speedbooster it would be a perfect product.

    For all you wondering, you will NEVER be able to control aperture or auto focus IN CAMERA with this device. Check out 1:43. You can see the connections (little pins) from the lens to the speedbooster are there, which allows you to control aperture and stuff from the remote handle. However, when he flips the booster you will notice there are no connectors for connecting the booster to the camera body. No firmware update can fix this. Apurture will need to make a completely new device with pins on both sides. If you look at the front and back of the METABONES you will notice it has pins on both sides.

    • @alelopez6552
      @alelopez6552 Před 7 lety

      The pins are to connect to the camera. The speed buster is doing the aperture and the focus it self. It does not need to send the info to the camera. Its a shame that it doesn't do both, but its still awesome. You are right, no firm update will fix that.

    Hey there, loved the video, but there is one thing I must point out which will be valuable for you to know.
    This is intended as a constructive comment, nothing else.
    Your sigma 18-35 1.8 does not behave like that on a M43 sensor. Besides multiplying the focal length times 2x crop, you must also multiply the aperture. On a GH4, this lens is a 36-70mm f3.6. Here's why:
    The f number is calculated using a mathematical formula: f=focal length/entrance pupil (not necessarily the aperture because of glass elements magnification)
    So, the entrance pupil is fixed and you can't change it. If you increase the focal length due to the crop factor, you will have a bigger focal length number dividing by the fixed entrance pupil.
    Lets consider that the 50mm f1.8 does not have any magnification to simplify the math.
    Formula: focal length/entrance pupil= f number
    Full frame 0x crop -> 50mm/27.7mm=f1.8
    APSc 1.5x crop -> 75mm/27.7mm=f2.7
    M43 2x crop -> 100mm/27.7mm=f3.6
    So, basically, your lens will not become an f1.2 because it's physically impossible. If the speed booster reduces the crop by .75 it will bring you to the APSC performance giving you an effective 1.5x crop instead of 2x
    Good luck in your endeavours (:

    Hello friend, first of all very awesome review, English isn't your first language though you in the review you were far more eloquent, clear and very intelligently highlighted different stuff as compare to many top reviewers of CZcams, bravo :)
    I know many think or see this new Apurture adapter as the doom of metabones though i see both of them as the players of different leagues, Apurture just won by giving the auto focusing and wireless follow focus to its customers though i know with in 3 or 4 months Metabones will add something good in their firmware updates for both Ultra and XL. Probably the new model from Metabones may have similar features like Apurture, the game is on ;)

      @danielecarmona Před 8 lety

      ***** umm no but if you want an high resolution picture you need light, it means that if you have more light even the things very far away will looks sharp, if the lens is dark you have less light and less details, then yes at 50% may improve even depth the other 50% it's about the resolution of your sensor.

  • @ErrickJackson
    @ErrickJackson Před 8 lety

    This is great, but I'm fairly certain you're not getting f1.2.
    On the gh4, since you have a crop factor of 2x, the 18-35/1.8 is actually acting like a 36-70/3.6. Because the aperture they put on there is based on a full frame standard. So when using the focal reducer, you're just getting the 1.5x crop instead; effectively 27-52mm f2.7.
    All lens focal lengths and apertures are stated based on 35mm standard (which is really mischievous of lens makers) so when used on a smaller sensor, you get a crop of the full image circle, thus showing an effective longer focal length and narrower aperture.

Did you colour grade? Just wondering because your shots look so detailed and clean. I've gotten around there but find myself making mistakes here and there with the colour grading and pushing it slightly too far making it look muddy. It would be awesome to know how u grade (if you even do) and sharpen your image and what your export settings are like! Thanks

    Awesome review, you have a nice style and it's very complete. Couple questions!
    1) Is there a way to turn the remote off so you can adjust the aperture from the camera? Or how am I supposed to change the aperture in hand-held shots while holding the camera with both hands? Or if you run out of battery of the remote? Or if I want to run-and-gun and don't want to bring the remote?
    2) I guess focus control only works on digital lenses with autofocus? What if you have a manual lens?

After watching this a few weeks ago ive been looking at moving over to the GH4 with LensRegain but as i want to shoot photos as well as video Im not sure if to go with the SpeedBooster. Do you still use the SpeedBooster at all?

    Have you ever used the Sigma 19mm Micro Four Thirds Lens?
    I have a toss up between the panasonic 20mm and the stigma 19mm.

    Wireless follow focus systems with a focus gear motor, wireless transmitter, gear rings and a wireless follow focus cost around $2000 and up. So this device is a much cheaper option.

    But I do have one question : you mentionned it's useful with glidecam work, but where do you place the remote in order to change focus easily without losing the balance of the whole setup ?

    • @Andyax
      @Andyax  Před 8 lety

      +Charles S. Thanks Charles. Either use the claw clip to attach it to the handle of the steadycam, or have a second person operating the focus.

    • @CharlesSchiele
      @CharlesSchiele Před 8 lety

      That's what I thought, but do you really think the remote(clamped to the handle) is made to hold a heavy steadicam (mine is around 6kgs total). I'm not sure it can withstand the weight for long before receiving damages :/

    "Another great way to use the DEC LensRegain is when shooting on a steadycam since you shouldn't touch the camera while filming it's really hard to focus, but since the DEC is wireless it solves the problem" - do you mean that someone else should pull focus for you? or would you mount it to the handle of the steadycam? in the clip you show while saying that you're not using the remote

    So If I can only afford one mount for the GH5 +Sigma 12-35mm, what should I get? Metabones or Aputure?
    Contexts for what I'm doing:
    Initially the Sig Lens will be used indoor for Green Screen work on a GH5.
    I'll have the Pan 12-60mm 2.8/4 for outdoor run and gun stuff but If I wanted to take the Sig Outside...

    Hi,
    I understand that Aputure is now working on a new DEC lens adapter called Vari-ND and added a new lens control dial/button directly on the module without the need to carry the grip handle every where you go. will the DEC lens regain also enjoy this new feature update?

    Hi, have you tried the Aputure DEC LensRegain with the Tamron 24-70 2.8 lens on your GH4 ? I would like to know if the in-built VC (equivalent to Canon's IS) works fine with this adapter on the GH4 ? Cheers

    How shoudl Aputure update the firmware to make the aperture controllable by the body? The adapter has no contacts towards the lens, there's no communication :(

  • @DiegoGape
    @DiegoGape Před 7 lety +1

    I have the first Aputure DEC and I can't change the aperture directly from the comera with my Sigma 17-50, only with the controller. Now you have the 18-35 my problem is that DEC doesn't support my lens or this happens with the old version. I'm about to change it for the Lensregain, doest it happen with that too?
    Thank you!

    "If aputure had of made it with more focal reduction for full frame lenses that would have been great". Can you expand on this a little are you suggesting full frame lenses arent adequately compatable with this product? Or are you refering to the fact that with more focal reduction you would be getting a true focal length full frame equivalent on a MFT sensor? Also about the focal length read out on the device is that full frame equivalent or just what position your lense is at? Sorry for all the questions would greatly apreciate it if you got back to me.

    Not sure how much time you've spent with the Panasonic GH4, however, I've had this question for some time.
    I want to shoot (video) in the night - mostly vehicles. What do you think about the GH4 + Canon 50mm f1.4 + Speedbooster (DEC or Metabones)?
    What other lens would you suggest getting?
    Awesome video tutorials and advice, keep bringing them to us, thanks.
