I agree, he had incredible natural talent but you can already hear the problems in this early recording. I heard him live at Covent Garden a few times and it wasn`t that great to be honest. He never developed a true vibrato and so the voice didn`t really carry apart from when he pushed. It`s a shame, as with the right advice he could´ve been the next big tenor to fill the void after Pavarotti moved on! Kraus was the best voice I ever heard at Covent Garden. He sounded so much better live. He actually made the place shake!
His upper register was problematic from the very beginning when he sang repertoire that lay outside his natural possibilities (La fanciulla del West). La Danza is fine. Someone should have told him - maybe his talent wouldn't have gone to waste. This is a nice lyric voice, good for La Bohème, not for Aida or Otello.
Just my opinion, but the Puccini is a little heavy for him... must have liked the aria. I was in NYC when he debuted at the Met, and the build up to him was way over the top, and he couldn't possibly have lived up to the hype for his debut as Rodolfo. Great instrument!
