Predicting this yearâs BABY GOAT COLOR COMBOS! đ (goat genetic analysis)

- OMG, I so hope we get these color combinations this year!
The Nigerian Dwarf breed has so many possibly combinations, and in this video we're going to go over the genetics of our goats and make the best prediction on which colors we're most likely to end up with! Goats can have all sorts of colors, spots, patterns, markings, as well as blue eyes, moon spots, and can also be polled. In today's video, we're going to dive deep into goat genetics and hopefully if we're lucky, we'll get some of these cute colors in the spring when all the mamas kid.
Hi there! đđ» We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old đ„° Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. đ„°

Thanks for joining us in today's video! UPDATE: I made an error on Raven's -- if she's chocolate then she *has* to have two copies of the black gene, she couldn't carry the buckskin gene at all.

Love watching your CZcams videos and tiktoks
I looked for. Video but what happened to fern?
there has to be a gene that contained pigment for example in dogs its e or E that control pigmint showing along with modifer's meaning there has to be a modifer for the coats probably a wider ranged one for the base color
My question as Buckskin is a pattern can they pass on the light color without the buckskin pattern?

Once they give birth in the spring you should do an updated version on the babies and say what they are as well. This run through of how genotypes and phenotypes work is truly fascinating!
This was so fun!!! I am obsessed with genetics 𧏠great work on this channel, as always.
Yay! I'm so glad! It was fun to dive deep into:)
@@Weedemandreap we just had a baby goat born this morning and she is a really odd color, her mom is swiss and her dad is what I call red sable, she is more of a cream sable, what color could she be?
On today's episode: punnett squares! Thank you for making this, it was both fun and educational! I feel like this will probably be super helpful for someone who's taking a biology course now, but might be struggling to understand it. Sometimes having a real world connection that you're interested in can make all the difference. đ
Biologist here: this video is amazing! This should be used in biology classes when the topics of heredity and dominant and recessive genes is used! Easy to understand, fun and informative. WELL DONE !
I was a bio major. This was a wonderful explanation! Iâm excited to see the outcome. Youâll have to reference this video when they kid, to see which prediction came to be.
Yes! Please make a video in the spring comparing these punnet squares to the kid colors. â€ïž
Iâm so excited for the baby goats đźđźđźđźđźđźđđđđđđđ đ đđ
Same!
Today is my Birthday!! And the genetics are so cool i cant wait to see the little bady goats!đ€©đ€©đ€©
iâm so excited to see the baby goats đđđ I hope Reba or Dollie have a chocolate/gold baby. That is a nice color
Same!
Absolutely loved the science lesson đ„° needs to be a thing every breeding season
Yes I totally agree
As a genetics nerd that has been following this channel for a good while now, this is so interesting to learn! Never thought I would dive into goat genetics yet here I am xD
Lovely video! Love me some theories on what the babies will look like! đ
I can't wait for baby goats!
Thank you for doing the pairings this way, Danelle. It was easy to follow. I learned a lot today. đđđ»
Working with genetics is always so fun. It makes it better when you know the goats that are in the equation!
Very interesting
Thank you for sharing goat genetics with us! That is so cool! I thought that black for sure would have been a dominant trait but you showed me otherwise. The black gene in goats sort of reminds me of the orange gene in cats (you must have two cats with the ginger gene [or the female is a calico/tortie] in order to produce ginger kittens). What would you say the rules are for the white gene in goats? Would it be the same as the black gene where both the parents need to have white to express it, or does it only need to come from a single goat that expresses that gene?
There is actually no such thing as a white Nigerian dwarf. White is like a bleaching over the actual pattern. A goat that looks completely white is technically gold with an âextensive white overlayâ. Normally as they age you can see faint hints of gold through the white coat. And the gold color is dominant so a gold goat can carry an of the other patterns and throw kids that look completely different from them.
@@qtcourtney6 đ đ Gold color can vary from Red Gold like Reba to a light cream color. Gene for White (Saanen) is not present in Nigerian!
White is like an over lay, its dominant like the blue eyes but the level of white depends if they got it from both parents, if from both then there will be much more white as they have double white and therefore all their offspring would always have some white
i must say! Prim is my fav in coloring! She soooo beautiful!
Wow! Thank you so much for breaking down the genetics of each of the goats! This was so fascinating! So excited for babies again!đ
One of my favorite videos:)
As a biology major I loved this video.
Well damn this was a fun video to watch! I've never been super into genetics but now I might be hahaha
It gets more complicated when you get into co-dominant genes and the fact that some genes aren't compatible with each other but genetics is such a fun topic.
you can clearly see the amount of effort put into this video and it made the video that much more enjoyable to watch! loved this content and hope to see another one next breeding season!!
Wow! Interesting and beautifully laid out.
I love all the combos and broken buck skins! So cute
This is amazing!!!! Iâve been wanting a video with the different coats and patterns ! You explained it so well â€
So interesting that with goats the recessive is actually the dark, unlike humans :)
LOVED this! so interesting and you make it so easy to understand! ive been watching you for 4 years now, love your content, and excited for the baby rush!
That was so cool to watch! Very informative. I loved it!
the explanation was so perfect. iâm so excited!!

I love this! So much hard work went into it and itâs so enjoyable to watch!
I think this is one of my favorite videos you have done! So fun to see what combos you might end up with! â€
I love your channel, you guys, and your animals. Iâm so excited to see the babies in the springâ€
That looked like so much fun maybe Iâll try to do that one day, it would be fun to learn about my goatâs genes and kind of guess what the babies will look like. Thank you for always posting a videos it makes my day to see you work through and care for your sweet goats! đ
Absolutely loved this video ! I have been watching for years and always love learning about the history of the goats every now and then
Thank you for all the time and energy you spent in this video.
I love, love, loved this video! I think genetics are so fascinating and it was fun to see all of the potential combinations you could end up with! Can't wait until kidding season :)

Iâm most excited about dollys babies because of all the genetics but Iâm still excited for the rest of the babies too
Love your dedication to this Channel.. You've put in so much hard work and come so far since your FIRST VIDEO........ LOVE ALWAYS
Wow thank you so much!! â€ïž
This was so fun!!!! Thank you for the breakdown đ
Pleaseeee do more videos like this in the future!!! Loved this!
Holy goat! You've come a long way Danelle! Can't believe I first came here for your amazing swimming pond and stayed for your family's personalities (don't have a pond - yet, don't have a goat - yet???!!!, really dislike to cook - this probably won't change), and now I'm learning about goat breeding and their genetics. :D Thanks for doing all this!
I really enjoyed watching this , thankyou . Great video
4:34 Prim is my favorite design†clean & luxury !
Really fun and interesting video. It's fascinating learning how many combinations and possibilities there are for all the animals. Thanks for sharing your herd genetics with us. âș
Love the genetics video. Thanks for putting this out
i loved this. never heard it explained so well. thx
This is so interestingđ and my science teacher told us how to tell what the genetics are Depending on if its a dominant or recessive gene. Ps my science teacher would probably love to show this to us đ(love ur content it makes my day when ur videos come out)âïž
This was soo fun and interesting! Thank u for this!
Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks for the genetic breakdown.
That was excellent! Loved it!!
Very nice, what a color combo u can have. Thank U 4 sharing, really enjoyed ur vid.đđâ€
This was an interesting video. I remeber studying dominant and recessive genes in humans in my high school biology class. It was interesting to find out how it works with goats. Wishing your family a very Happy Thanksgiving!
This was a super cool video! Canât wait for Tatum babesđ
This was an excellent presentation đ€ A+
This was great. You really formatted the information well. I would LOVE to see you do the same thing once the babies are born but show what you actually got. What a great teaching tool. Thank you! Also would love to see a new video on what plants did well and where in and around the pond. Just to finish off that "series". You gave such great content for potential pond builders but the only area where it could use improvement was a followup on the plants and maybe other tricks you've learned. Thanks for considering my suggestion and Happy Holidays!
This was really interesting! Iâm excited too see what they have x
Would love to see us come back to this after the babies are born! Such an interesting video! Love the science of goats!!
What a fun video!! Thank you for sharing this
This was so intresting and fun to see! Thank you!
I really love your channel I've watched you since willow was born so excited for these babies x
This was a very fun video, I really appreciate the example babies to show what the colors could look like. I hope you do one for each breeding season!
thank you for sharing this! animal color genetics is one of my autistic special interests and goats were one that I was struggling to find information for!
I love, love, love genetics. This is so fascinating đ
This has been one of my favorite episodes! Iâm so interested in color genetics and it was fascinating to see it all laid out like this! Iâm so excited to see what yâall get! Watch the recessive black make a strong showingđ that would be hilarious. Hope you get a chocolate gold! Wonder how the white spotting is going to play out in all this
This was really interesting for me! I want to be a vet. I just find genetics so interesting!! You will definitely have some amazing Kids this coming season!
Great explanation of the genetics. Can't wait to see the results. Maybe you could post the results next to the predictions , that would be interesting.
This was super interesting! Thanks for breaking it down.
Such a fun video! Now Iâm excited to see what babies you get!
Loved this video and loved your sweater!
I love the goats so much! On a previous video I said I wanted to purchase a goat from yâall in the future and that still holds true. You and Blue Cactus Dairy Goats have inspired me to (in the future) get my own little herd of dairy goats and potentially even showing. I want to be a veterinarian so Iâm learning all about different traits of animals!
I wish you the best! Goats are one of the hardest animals to contain, care, and they are very very expensive to keep. Copper, selenium, probios, kidding equitment, hay, tack, milkstand, fencing, antibiotics, shots, CD+T, and on and on and on. And all that is very pricy. So be prepared! having goats isn't a holiday, in fact you can't hardly go anywhere. And PLEASE don't get them and then give them away for free!!!! It is ruining the goat market. I can't sell my very high quality kids for as much as usual, why would people buy them when they can get them for free? Good luck with your animals! Best wishes!
So cool,i love this. Pls do more often
Very interesting color combinations. HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you all
This is fascinating! Thank you for all of the hard work putting this together. Happy Thanksgiving!
I love genetic talk, happy Thanksgiving!
