you must have been wicked happy that it started after rolling that many times...first pull too ..better to ride out of that then walk down that mountain ..lucky and skilled great vid
To be honest at the time I realized what was going on my mind was just looking for an escape and to avoid getting in the slide snow. I was surprised how well I reacted considering all I was facing at the time (avalanche, big rock in the way, sled rolling till its totaled, being buried, etc...) But the moment after everything is all said and done and you actually comprehend what just happened then yeah talk about every cliche on eye opening experiences.
Thanks for the vid!!! I am going snowmobiling in west Yellowstone in a month and just wanted to know how it looked!! :) this vid taught me a losson!!! AVALANCHES!!!!
Good to see ya stopped would have been along ride down. I was buried about ten years ago was lucky to i ended up just under surface. glad i had two good diggers . man that snow packs up quik . Play safe dude
Give him a break I'm sure he has lots of avalanche experience on his '99 Indy. The whole time I was watching the climb I was pretty convinced that I would be in your shoes had I been the first one to the hill... Gives you an uneasy feeling knowing that could easily be me. Glad you're alright and now you've got (hopefully) a once in a lifetime story to tell!
Every avalanche video i watch, seems like everyone doesn't get caught in it. Looks like to me we are getting such good sleds that we can out ride them. But avays are still dangerous... YOU were extremely lucky!
I rode one of those down in 1986 on a Polaris 400......they are scary when you first get caught in it.....good thing it was just a small one but you never know what you got till its over.....gets the adrenaline flowing huh? So glad your ok.....
My buddies and I were talking once, since a guy is usually at the top when the snow lets go, if still facing uphill, to just stick it in the lower layer of snow, take a bit to dig out later, but the key word is " later" . Hard to make a one second decision with lots of variables though. 13000 ft awesome, I pant at 6000, if workin, diggin, whatever. Check out "Outrunning an avalanche" in Hasler BC. Glad your not a statistic, have fun (prob wouldve been better w a brp product) :)
unless you have been in an avey, who are u to say what you would do? there is no time at all to sit down and think about what you would do!!! Glad that your ok, and thanks for showing, and sick sled too
Hi, I am currently working on the development of a new television series for Discovery. We would be interested in including an extract of the above video in our programme and I wonder if you can tell me whether this might be possible? Check your inbox for Details, thanks
So lucky!! What was the "pucker factor" like when you saw that big gap and all the snow was heading in the opposite direction faster than what your speedo read???
Hey Jonezy, do you have an email address at which we could contact you regarding this video? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible? (i.e. via email) :) Cheers, Felix
I want to know where your buddy took off to? You can clearly see him and from the bottom you can clearly see the slide and should have been able to see you. They should have come to check on you right away.
Well it was wind loaded not "stripped" whatever that means? Judging by the thin cover of the other aspects of the slope it gets pretty windy where you were, for future reference that points to unstable snow. It was just a wind slab releasing, didn't go very far, but scary none the less. I ride on that same kind of terrain all the time it happens and you should expect it, you just need make calculated risk management decisions.
I triggered the west yellowstone avey, your hill looks alot more prone to a slide than what i was on. It is a total rush to know you cheated death and won. everyone should know it s not if its when if you ride the back country, wear a beacon and an air pac, mine saved my life
Glad your O.K.! As a Mom of a 28 year old son I have to say something I noticed. After you experienced watching your own sled rolling towards you, then your recovery etc... I noticed a big difference in how fast you where going afterwards (compared to pre-avalanche) That's a Moms job, telling our kids to "slow down" We only nag cause we care enough to want you around for awhile! Enjoy life. The way I see it, experience is sometimes our greatest teacher. Peace...
Actually couldnt you tell that it hadn't? Very poor snow year and at the crown it was almost four feet deep. It looked that way because it was wind stripped.
Yeah the technology and performance could have to do with it but there still are alot of people every year that die in avalanches. Never think that you can "ride it out" because that logic will kill you.
Some people have no f'n clue on what its like to get caught in an avy - dont even waste your breath bro - I almost bought it and have lost a few bros from avy's .. the ones with neg comments have likely to pull the rope on a sled nevermind get in the back country and f'n near bite it. you did what you were supposed to - survive to keep ridin more days...Fuck the haters Peace
He did the right thing. As you can see in the video he turns at the point where the layer breaks off from the rest of the slope. He is on a lower, more stable layer of snow. If he'd carried on higher he would be going back onto the unstable layer that just slid, risking starting another avalanche and being taken down the slope!
yeah you guys are missing my drift here, you NEVER heard of anybody out riding a avy in like 2002. everyone got buried and they either got dug out dead or alive. these guys are out riding avys most of the time even if they are caught in the avy like this video. Is like no one reading the last sentence i wrote? "But avays are still dangerous... YOU were extremely lucky!" Look just to your right. Click on the "A Northern Ontario Avalanche". He didnt out ride it.
hope you never face that kinda thing like that again, once i saw one with my own eyes like ten feet in front of me at the topof the shute i new to stop riding that stuff cus i didn't wan't to kill myself
Wanna trade hobbies? This is sick. If you do want to trade, I fly rc planes and have a working FPV setup to about 5 miles, so its not a bad trade for you either :p
I thought you were alone because we never see anyone else in the video, with friends like that you were alone. I don't mean that to be insulting just looking at the reality of the situation. If you had been buried how long do you think it would have taken them to find you? I know its tough to find a good riding buddy, I have tons of people I know who ride but I only trust about 3 of them go into the deep with me.
Hey yo i think the reason why u only see videos of ppl making it out is because those ppl who got caught didnt make it home to upload the video, lotta ppl die every year from Avalanches u know
He handled that like a fuckin champ
makes you think twice about life and back country safety . Thanks for sharing
you must have been wicked happy that it started after rolling that many times...first pull too ..better to ride out of that then walk down that mountain ..lucky and skilled great vid
What an experience ? i'm sure life never looks the same after this. Thanks for sharing
Dude that made my heart start beating! Fantastic video
To be honest at the time I realized what was going on my mind was just looking for an escape and to avoid getting in the slide snow. Dude glad your OK. I don't like to ride alone but if I do I stick to the trails. NEVER ride hills alone!
That slope looked totaly safe.Wow, that thing slid down to dirt. Good job handling yourself and your sled.
Wind loaded face, gotta watch out for the signs! Thanks for this.
Yup!!
Thanks for the vid!!! I am going snowmobiling in west Yellowstone in a month and just wanted to know how it looked!! :) this vid taught me a losson!!! AVALANCHES!!!!
I am just glad you caught your baby, almost got heart broken when I saw it start rolling.
"Well played, Mr. Mountain. Well played indeed"
Good to see ya stopped would have been along ride down.

Not gonna lie, that looked awesome
I rode one of those down in 1986 on a Polaris 400......they are scary when you first get caught in it.....good thing it was just a small one but you never know what you got till its over.....gets the adrenaline flowing huh? So glad your ok.....
Well that was a surprise! Nice recovery.
You are so lucky dude...
You almost gapped the shelf! awesome vid!
My buddies and I were talking once, since a guy is usually at the top when the snow lets go, if still facing uphill, to just stick it in the lower layer of snow, take a bit to dig out later, but the key word is " later" . 0:33 I love the way people look when they move frantically in the snow with a chest mount
Starts right back up on the first pull, Off you go! Damn
This Jones pass? Last year was super sketch in most areas, but that area scares the shit out of me most years, glad you made it out!
unless you have been in an avey, who are u to say what you would do? there is no time at all to sit down and think about what you would do!!! Glad that your ok, and thanks for showing, and sick sled too

Nice machine! Saved his life.
holy fuck that was intense
Wow man, you were lucky on that one, good recover to grab the sled too, hope you bought a lottery ticket when you got home:)
So lucky!! What was the "pucker factor" like when you saw that big gap and all the snow was heading in the opposite direction faster than what your speedo read???
Whoooo eeee! Talk about getting lucky! Damn!
Nice video

I thought that sled would have trampled you, thankfully you pulled some ninja shit in a nick of time!
Just saw this.. Looks like that rock was the weak spot. Just guessing as I can't se the whole slope. Glad you're good!
Was there any damage to your sled? Thats not really important, but thats a nice sled?
dang dude I could tell just by looking at the snow that it was gonna give any pull
"Oh shit" is right! Glad to know you got out alright! How was the sled? Looks no worse for wear from what I can see.
Well that escalated quickly
As soon as i saw that break in the snow up there woulda been shit running down my leg
No lack of idiots on snowmobiles!
You where kinda safe since you made
It to the top but it is hard to stop. But nice save
that looked very scary :o
I want to know where your buddy took off to? You can clearly see him and from the bottom you can clearly see the slide and should have been able to see you. They should have come to check on you right away.
where was that
this guy was probally like i go down in a second just got to clean the shit out of my pants
Yeah your right. it was wind loaded. Didnt mean to say stripped.
That shit was intense!!!!!!!!!!!
Lucky to get stop on your snowmobile
Scary shit man, youre lucky it didnt go huge on you
Where was this at? Looks like the Colligates? I ride the same state as you. Glad that no one was hurt!
It was up near crested butte
+Nick Jones I heard you ride in idaho... my buddy got a snow machine and doesn't know a good spot to ride.
Strigent Odin sorry man I'm in Colorado
Nick Jones
damn =/ Im tired of riding on flat ground i wanna climb some mountains.
Looks like vail pass
Windshield was loose but she held up great! Wouldnt have said the same if it had rolled all the way down.
Well it was wind loaded not "stripped" whatever that means? a couple seconds slower you would have bogged out. lucky.
Why the hell would you keep going once you see the chunks...
Buy a Ski-Doo That way you won't ever climb high enough to get in anymore avalanches haha
Nice save on the snowmobile ;) would have been a wreck if you didn't catch it.
I can see a bunch of other people in this video. Try watching again.
I triggered the west yellowstone avey, your hill looks alot more prone to a slide than what i was on. It is a total rush to know you cheated death and won. everyone should know it s not if its when if you ride the back country, wear a beacon and an air pac, mine saved my life
Did I miss the part with an avalanche?
Adrenalin?
That's not a buried sled right in the gap is it?
Wow thanks tips!! Uhm i was making a joke princess, but thanks for helping me out!!!
My joke was towards polaris being a crappy sled, just in case you didn't get it.
Great video! Seems like everybody wants to nitpick. Glad you're OK.
Glad your O.K.! As a Mom of a 28 year old son I have to say something I noticed. After you experienced watching your own sled rolling towards you, then your recovery etc... Started first pull!!!!!
Never shower alone
holy balls
Coral reef at the run out...
that was a bad slope to be on. it cut almost to the ground so it was sitting on the shitty layer from earlier in the season
please tell me you were not just by yourself doing that..?! very lucky outcome.
What should I have done? Stopped and rode it down to get buried? ....
Actually couldnt you tell that it hadn't? Very poor snow year and at the crown it was almost four feet deep. It looked that way because it was wind stripped.
shit you was lucky there buddy :)
Yeah the technology and performance could have to do with it but there still are alot of people every year that die in avalanches. Never think that you can "ride it out" because that logic will kill you.
And you were heads up enough to save the sled!! Great video, phuck all the haters, great job in a shit yer pants situation!!
Some people have no f'n clue on what its like to get caught in an avy - dont even waste your breath bro - I almost bought it and have lost a few bros from avy's .. the ones with neg comments have likely to pull the rope on a sled nevermind get in the back country and f'n near bite it. you did what you were supposed to - survive to keep ridin more days...Fuck the haters
Peace
Holy fuck
i wouldnt turn when i saw it started, full throttle, and get above it..
He did the right thing. As you can see in the video he turns at the point where the layer breaks off from the rest of the slope. He is on a lower, more stable layer of snow. If he'd carried on higher he would be going back onto the unstable layer that just slid, risking starting another avalanche and being taken down the slope!
one guy was at the bottom and got buried by that avalanche
@mitch Sharp
Well the hill I was climbing on was just over 13,000 feet, So yea elevation and adrenaline can have that effect
I was with 4 of my friends. But yes I agree
I woulda peed lol good job man
Polaris all day every day!
snow fields are quite dangerous
yes you are totally right. respect it. and it will still turn out bad haha
your lucky the sled didn't role on top of you
Often no video from the ones that do get caught......
yeah you guys are missing my drift here, you NEVER heard of anybody out riding a avy in like 2002. everyone got buried and they either got dug out dead or alive. these guys are out riding avys most of the time even if they are caught in the avy like this video. You didnt die because you had a polaris ;)
Wanna trade hobbies? This is sick.
