PPG Smoke Flotation Review | Avery Flies

  • Today I do my best to avoid drowning in a kiddie pool with CO2 inflated floats from PPG smoke. The U float and Dual float both offer a way to increase your survival in the event of a water landing with water activated, manual, and blown inflation methods. I try all 3 of those and see if it really does work as advertised.

    I got some great advice regarding the (dual) flotation system setup from a long time professional/competitor in PPG.
    He said to only mount ONE of them on one side or the other - this will ensure just enough flotation to keep your equipment afloat and most importantly, will enable you to roll over to one side to get your head out of the water.
    He went on to say that the only real purpose of flotation is to save the equipment and that the only surefire way to save your life is to have a quick disconnect or unbuckled before you hit the water.

    nothing better than watching a grown man in a kiddie pool. 😅
    jokes aside i am having the EXACT double flotation devices on my EPPG and hope i never need to find out if they work or not. i love the idea that there are 2 for one on each side and they should be able to hold your face over water no matter what. that being said i absolutely hate how awkward they are to install if you dont have the EXACT frame they had in mind when developing them. start watching now avery and hope they dont suck

      done. yeah nice! thanks for testing that. i was always wondering if this extra weight on take off my beach will safe me one day or let me drown sideways.
      love how you juggled those jugs. kyle O would be proud! i try contact him for long time but never get an answer anymore. do you know if he is ok avery? start to worry a bit. no uploads forever and no reply to emails as well.

    The most dense thing on the paramotor is the engine. That will sink, so i dont think the inclination is typically to be forward, but leaned backwards with the engine under water (which is what you see in most water landings). Otherwise great info, Avery!

    • @AveryFlies
      @AveryFlies  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I've never water landed, so I can't say for sure, but I get the feeling that it will depend on how hard you flare in the end. Generally from what I've heard the wing over shoots and the motor goes face down. Whether or not that flips I'm not sure.

      @@AveryFlies i saw water landings twice here in china. pilot flew over a glassy river at the end of calm day. i warned him its like a mirror and he wont be able to judge height. he didnt listen and went in. its always forward like a faceplant, wing lines falling like spaghetti all over you. he almost drowned even with flotation because he couldnt get his legs out from tangled lines, wrapping himself up with every move. i think the combination of all things together is what gets you in the end. if its just you fall in the water - fine. you turn around and you get yourself up to breathe.
      but being in the seat, covered in lines, cant open the buckles because they are under tension, having your face pushed down from the flotation, unable to turn and then panic. thats what will make the result of survival so much worse.

    Great video. It was both lighthearted and informative. I have the floatation devices from PPG Smoke, thankfully I haven't had to use them. Still a new pilot, so I wont be caught dead, or drowning by flying over water without them, just not that confident yet. Thank you so much for all the great videos you put out, you really do a great job. I have a lot of footage I have yet to share, you inspire me. Take care, be safe.

      I actually thought about those bike pump refillable air tank things that give you like 10 minutes underwater, might not be a terrible idea

  • @dkumpula001
    @dkumpula001 Před 2 měsíci

    Yup, avoiding a water landing is the ideal plan. I just replaced my CO2 cartridges and water-activation thingies today. You might have mentioned that these are supposed to be replaced every two years (they have expiration dates on them typically). You also might have weighed the used cartridges as they should have dropped below the minimum weight listed on the cartridges.

    • @AveryFlies
      @AveryFlies  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I'm sure the used cartridges were lighter of course, they were empty. The expiration date is mostly for the salt tab in the bobbin though. This setup does not pierce the CO2 until the pull cord or the salt tab is activated. CO2 should be good for several more years but the salt tab can deteriorate quickly in high humidity.

      @@AveryFlies Good to know, thanks! Upon re-examination the cylinders do not have an expiration date, just a manufactured date and minimum weight. The expiration date is only on the salt-tabby thing-a-ma-bob. Thanks for spending the $$$ to test!

      If one person appreciates the extra money spent on the salty thingamabobs then it's money well spent LOL

    I have very similar floats (Not PPG Smoke brand) and I have the duel floats mounted either side of the harness on the frame. Never had to use them but is much more out of the way and would put inflation less in front of me to start. Good video

      Yeah, there are a few other options out there. From what I've seen in photos though they all use the same inflator.
