Knowing what you can and can't get away with brushing the other plantings without any significant damage and making it work is a sign of expertise and nothing to apologize about! A lot of it has to do with how fragile the species is.. And nothing wrong with the rip, as long as YOUR CLIMBING LINE OR LANYARD IS NOT UNDERNEATH THE CUT. You mentioned earlier that putting a notch in with the intention that the hinge would possibly slow the piece down. A rip will generally do far more to that end than a hinge. And it was interesting to see the rip, and hopefully learn something from it. Definitely unexpected.. perhaps due to the very slight differential between the two cuts, species, or the architecture of the limb at the bend... It may seem relatively insignificant, but trying to glean as much insight out of every little unexpected occurrence can reap a wealth of knowledge in this industry and no better way than video to examine such events. I figure the time of year/ hydrology + weight of the limb contributed to that tear. few species get so bad they'll peel even around ur wing cuts. then there's the heavy wood that splits, if the splitting starts in the wood before the depth of the under cut it'll chase down the limb past it (if that makes sense) crazy stuff
I have that quite a bit here in the northern Midwest.. Have resorted to an extra score cut 2/3 the way around centered on the front side about 6-8" under the undercut to help stop the peeling.. Especially on more parallel to the ground bigger branches.. Any advise from years of experience would be appreciated..

Versatility will always be an advantage. Anytime I get a tree on a hill, speedline is on my mind. Trees don't get that tall here in Oklahoma but they look like that oak you're in. Spread out and all over everything. Nice bombs!

That rip was pretty crazy, considering it looks like you were halfway through with the undercut.
