In 1793, Thomas Jefferson, then Secretary of State under the Washington Administration, requested that the French send artifacts that could be used to adopt the metric system in the United States, so the French sent Joseph Dombey with a standard kilogram and such. Dombey was captured on his way to America by British privateers, who proceeded to hold him in captivity on Montserrat until he died.
