The pr9blems with artillery is what drove the extremely fast development of the G5 and G6 gun systems. I say systems because these were more than just the guns. It included development of ammunition, meteorological system (weather balloon tracking) and new doctrines for integrating long range artillery.
It is amazing that this was developed as quickly as it was.

@@RungeCarl It would make fascinating reading.
There were so many people involved across so many companies developing different parts of the system and making it all come together. I worked at a company in Cape Town that made the meteorological systems (weather balloon tracking systems) needed for high accuracy. The system developed there was ahead of its time and was smaller, tougher and needed less people to operate than competitive systems. That company still sells the updated products to international customers.
It took the USA much longer to develop their equivalent howitzer (M198) and that could not shoot as far as the G5/G6 and was only a towed howitzer, not a self-propelled unit. In fact the first howitzers to outperform the G5/G6 are only now entering service - 40 years later.
Although many people played an important part, it is really the leadership that made the difference - to have the vision to direct a project all the way from an idea to integrating it onto the battlefield.

Jack Malloch was the most successful and prolific sanctions buster for Rhodesia. He I believe single handidly kept our meat industry alive by flying planeloads of meat to Europe literally two or three times a week, from Salisbury.1:03:31

Love the stories. Fills in so many blanks. I was with Wits Rifles then and got called up in early January 76. We were told we are going to war. I got such a skrik I too had a spiritual turn around and got "saved". If I remember correctly our whole regiment went up and we were suppose to replace the Transvaal Scottish. Could be wrong.

Thanks Doc and Dale for an interesting and historical discussion, In 2000 Armando de Abreu, Tony Vieira and myself trained security guards for Ascorp diamond company. The training base was on Mouro de Cal (Mount of calc) and it was the SADF artillery position, we found old empty R1 ammo cases and artillery shells there. Kifandongo is about 5km direct south from that hill and there is a memorial wall erected there probably after 1975. A huge Cuban base is just across the high ground and I heard a mercenary, I think Col Callahan was executed at the bridge when they tried to attack from the north.
