  • BlackTree TV's own Brooke Christopher sits down with Terrence Howard and gets his take on the significance of Disney's The Princess and the Frog. The relevance of this picture in discussing Dr. Kenneth Clark's Doll test, and just what it means to be a Disney animated character.
JAMES (voice of Terrence Howard) is Tianas inspiration and she is the legacy of his love. A strong, loving father who has instilled his daughter with her ethics and with a familiar bond in New Orleans residents: their love of good food. You see, James tells little Tiana, food brings folk together from all walks o life. It warms em right up, and puts smiles on their faces-and when I open my own restaurant people are gonna line up for miles, just to get a taste of my food.
Our food, Tiana lovingly corrects him.
Supervising animator Ruben Aquino says, Its the core of what she wants and why she is the way she is. Ive got to sell the audience on showing how much love there is in the family and how James loves Tiana so much. He is always present in Tianas heart.
During the 1940s, psychologists Kenneth Bancroft Clark and his wife, Mamie Phipps Clark designed a test to study the psychological effects of segregation on black children. In 1950 Kenneth Clark wrote a paper for the White House Mid-Century Conference on Children and Youth summarizing this research and related work that attracted the attention of Robert Carter of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Carter believed that Clark's findings could be effectively used in court to show that segregation damaged the personality development of black children. On Carter's recommendation, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund engaged Clark to provide expert social science testimony in the Briggs, Davis, and Delaware cases. Clark also co-authored a summation of the social science testimony delivered during the trials that was endorsed by thirty-five leading social scientists. The Supreme Court specifically cited Clark's 1950 paper in the Brown decision. A BlackTree Media Production Thank you for watching! I feel the most important thing for Disney was to set the record straight with little girls. We grow up thinking your life can be a fairy tale and you forget to do the work for it. That's a powerful message! You can make your own dreams. I don't know about you guys but I thought love had to be like a fairy tale, and it's definitely not all the time, it's a lot of hard work too! I thought they did a good job of putting the message out there that you shouldn't expect your dreams tho be handed to you.

I feel so thankful to Terrence Howard's words. He really does encourage and inspire me. "You are born as a winner." I'll definitely keep this faith forever.

What I have been trying to say for years... the issue isn't race, it is people keep on bringing it up. If we just drop it and treat everyone the same girls wont have to 'like' a princess just because they match her skin color

Such a great message, Terrence. We need more children saying that their inspiration was their dad. Great things he said about Disney, as well. Disney has always been at the forefront. I now live in the Orlando area and we have premium annual passes, so we go to the parks A LOT, and we love it every time!

I agree, even without the racial implication, it was still a good movie that promoted searching for dreams instead of just hoping they would happen. Sad it got such a bad blockbuster turn-out... Tiana and Belle are my favorites since they show females can be smart and hardworking

Exactly! Little girls who aren't Chinese still like Mulan, kids who aren't Middle Eastern like Aladdin and Jasmine, and it's not just Native American children who like Pocahontas.
For all the yammering people give about Disney corrupting the youth and whatnot, they're actually surprisingly good at unifying when you consider...
And I love Tiana just because she's such a fun character who is a well deserving Disney Princess. Here's to her! ^^

Technically no one ever says the Prince's ethnicity, but it's implied that his parents were royalty from two different nations (thus making him mixed). Naveen is an Indian name and his accent is some very bizarre blend.
Long story short, you're right, there's more important things in the movie than the ethnicity of the prince. Like how adorable he and Tiana are together. Aww! XD

you know what it's like to be under represented and to have a black doll be thought of as the "bad one". But like Terence said little white girls in Russia will be able to identify with her and see that she's black. That skin doesnt matter. Frankly to be perfectly honest I'm glad they made tiana the first black princess because she's the best princess. Hardworkng Go getter I dont need a prince to make my dreams come true. Just like a real black woman is.

This film has had a big influence on me. I want to work at Disney creating movies like this more than anything in the world, and just yesterday, I bought a collection of classic shorts that came with a collectible litho animation cell. This morning, when I picked it up and looked at it, my dream seemed so far away. Almost without thinking, I held it to my heart and whispered "Please, please, PLEASE."

The reason why race is a big deal and why Tiana being the first Black disney princess is because, disney actually UNDER REPRESENTS african americans. Walt Disney was actually quite racist. But times have changed THANK GOD and it was time for little girls to see that being white with blonde hair and blue eyes isnt the only type of princess. Black little girls needed to see that they are seen by the world as beautiful and they are princesses too. It is something that is hard to explain unless ..

Comments like this was exactly what Disney and all the other powers that be were looking for in the black community. "Give them a black princess, make them think they have been excepted in the world by all."
They may have done a black princess but in the end she marries a spanish (or some race like that). What does that teach little black girls to look for happiness and love in another race.
I have watch the film and I don't believe it is a good film.
