Donny Hathaway was just genius to me. His vocals are so real and alive. He had a smokey quality and his licks were fresh. Just a beast! His keyboard was matchless. Truly a genius. If I could reach a tenth of his level I would be pleased.

He could have put his hands in his pockets for the rest of his life and still had a career as a singer, and he could have sewn his mouth shut and still had a career as a jazz/funk/r&b keyboardist. It's such a shame there seems to be very little of his work preserved. He deserves a heck of a lot more respect, that's for sure.

Oh man I wish I could go back to the first I heard Donny Hathaway when I was 5 years old. My dad used to play his version This Christmas and To Be Young Gifted and Black all the time. Been a massive fan ever since. He was one of the true geniuses of Music.

My Father used to talk about how amazing Donny was when I was a child. As time has passed, I completely understand what he meant.
