FLL Animal Allies 2016/17 - 435 points || WORLD RECORD!!! || World Festival, St. Louis

  • This was the first time we got 435 points at the World Festival in St. Louis. We also reached our highscore in the semi finals of the robot games against the SAP Rockets.
    Our strategy is based on international robot game rules, which are different from the central european rules. It's allowed to exchanged all animals at once, if the model wasn`t turned before. The gecko and the robot on the wall don`t count if the feed for the frogs touches still the robot. And the shark can also be placed on the bottom of it`s tank.

Absolutely everything you planned to complete the animal conservation is beyond amazing! The way you collected the animals, the way you took the bat off the mission model, the way you built a system to hold 4 animals and place it back into the mission model, the use of the string......wow......it's amazing to see incredible creative brainpower in action!     really impressive robot and programming! We were frustrated at our local qualifier because we were not allowed to remove any pieces from the table (only our own attachments)...got very crowded in home base - and difficult to deal with!.... I knew that didn't sound right, but the head referee insisted she was correct..... still - ours was no where NEAR your awesome robot!!

      At the OEC, usually the international rules are used.

      We transmit the large and the medium motors to the bottom, so we have 4 motor outputs under :-)

    What do you use as your non-driving wheels? Do you use gyro sensor for turning and/or driving in a straight line?

      jms.master.builders 3132 We use two small wheels without rubber (lego piece 13971). We use the gyro sensor for driving, straight, arcs and turns and as an ending condition for the linefollower

    Between 1:08 and 1:12 your robot makes an incredibly smooth right turn.

      We don't use the given move-blocks of the Ev3-Software. They will always have this jerkiness. We wrote our own move blocks, to navigate more precise and make turns or arcs, that you just saw. If you are still trying, think about acceleration and deceleration and check out the blue unregulated motor blocks.

      +BrickSAPplied, How do you measure an accurate distance with the unregulated motor? the only way I have found is to use a wait block after the unregulated motor, and that only works for seconds which are not easy to use.
      If you have found a way to input degrees for the unregulated motor I would be so grateful if you could tell me how you did it.

    Congratulations, very good robot and especially great idea on Animal Conservation. Thanks for posting! How many light sensors do you use? I just saw two of them in front of the wheels, but I think (just guessing) you need another one on the opposite side of the wheels for line following in Milk Automation, am I correct?

    Also, how do you bring all that stuff to the table? We have like 2 large boxes, a small table, and still 2 big attachments the don't fit in any boxes.

      We builded a large(ca. 1,6mx0,8m) box from cardboards, duck tape and two planks with a low border and put it on a table

      Wir haben zuerst den Roboter im Lego Digital Designer nachgebaut und dann mit Bluerender nacheinander Bilder mit immer weniger Teilen gerendert und später dann einfach zu einem Video zusammengefügt (In dem Fall dann mit Hitfilm 4 Express)

      Yes, of course. The main difference is the speed of the robot, but apart from that the robot still drives straight and the angles are still the same. In these cases the program is very important...

      +brickSAPplied, Thanks! One more question: Over your season did you ever have to replace motors or sensors? Our teams motors have started grinding and were not sure if they are still functioning properly.

      We actually had some problems with the wires. One motor just stopped working normal during the competition... But this shouldn't be a problem normally. What we did, to prove the motors is, that we checked if they turn nearly the same in some seconds (therefor you have to use the unregulated motor blocks). It's also important to check them at negativ speeds. During the season the motors changed a bit, but we didn't replaced them or a sensor.

      One thing to note is that you can use unregulated motor blocks (advanced tab) so that your robot will move the same speed no matter what the battery power is. Standard motors have a failsafe that lowers the speeds on the motors, depending on the battery level, to save power.

      Mason Spies I don't think this is correct. Aren't the standard blocks "real" speeds, so the robot drives for example always with 50 degrees per second at speed 50? I think the unregulated motor blocks only set the power of for example 50% and depending on the battery level this is faster or slower. That's actually what we recognize. With lower battery the robot needs more time and drives slower and we only use the dark blue unregulated motor blocks. Am I right?

    Hi! :D I'm working on the Robot Game for Hydrodynamics, and I wanted to know how you were able to add extensions without moving motors at all. And also, do you have any general tips for the design?

      We transmit the power of the motors with gears to the extensions. Build your attachments and also the robot stable and reliable. Don't make to much at once and make it easy and not too complex (we aren't a good example for that :D). Also look at the navigation and just make few moves and it's good to build very compact

    What do you use to have precise turns? Do you use the simple gyro blocks? Because we had some problems with our turns cause the gyro sensor is not that reliable and its not always accurate... or does it depend on what type of wheels are used for the robot?

      We use a own block with acceleration and deceleration to turn until gyro degree. If it still wasn't precise, the next block can still correct the fault. For turns with gyro sensor the wheel size isn't so important, but slow speed is more precise and a deceleration helps to get the exact angle

    Also, for your over the ramp mission, do you still use default motor blocks to move it? If so, do you still just make one motor faster than the other? If so, do you have to adjust the curve amount everyday?

      Mindstorms Man - SWARM We actually never used default blocks. In our semi final and at the CE Final we used an own move block, which was similar to the default block and had some additional features like a smooth acceleration at the beginning, deceleration at the and,... After you asked in the comments of our other video we came up with the idea to use the Gyro sensor, to stay at the wall. Thats what we did. We used a second own move block, which lets the robot drive straight, using proportional correction to an angle(Gyro degree). To stay at the wall we didn't drove straight at the wall, but some degrees against the wall. Like this the robot didn't get away from the wall and also didn't get to much to the wall... In the end this one motor turns faster then the other, but it depends on the angle how much

      A very important thing is a high fault tolerance. Try to make the attachements as reliable as possible. You can add for example sometimes pieces to align at mission modules. Another tip we can give you is maybe: Don't solve to many missions at once and make the attachement simple and stable. Hope we could help a bit. Attachements are all different and it depends on the robot, the strategie and the programming, how they can be build and how they can solve their missions reliable

    wie habt ihr es geschafft, die Räder vom Untersatz(1:34), der über die grüne Rampe fährt, mit den Motoren vom Grundroboter zu betreiben?

      Die Motoren haben alle auch Zahnräder nach unten. Die werden dann einfach direkt auf den Untersatz übertragen. Das Gewicht vom Roboter reicht schon um die Kraft richtig übertragen zu können und die Zahnräder drehen nicht durch

      Ji W Für die kleinen Motoren nehmen wir die Zahnräder, mit ziemlich vielen Zähnen, die es im schwarz und hellbraun gibt. Davon dann die kleinsten und die nächst größeren. Für die großen benutzen wir die andere Sorte, die es in grau, hellgrau und noch in weiß als Durchdrehzahnrad gibt. Die mittleren sind im Roboter und die ganz großen im Untersatz

    Was macht ihr damit die Zahnradübersetzungen zwischen Roboter und Aufsatz flüssig laufen und ihr gleichzeitig keine Probleme habt beim abnehmen des Aufsatz?

      Julius Müller Wir haben im Roboter Löcher, sodass die Zahnräder im Aufsatz quasi doppelseitig aufgehängt sind. Die Achse geht dann einfach teilweise noch in den Roboter. So können die Zahnräder fast nicht durchdrehen und mit den vielen Zähnen kriegt man die Aufsätze immer noch leicht drauf und wieder runter...

      Magellan Wharf Rats Magellan We actually used the Lego Digital Designer and Bluerender. We had to rendern every single frame. The computers had fun for a while

    Since you rely on the gyro sensor during most of your run, how do you make sure its readings are accurate? Sometimes gyros can be very inconsistent.

      CheeseCube The problem with the gyro sensor is, that it has sometimes a drift and counts up very quikly. Before the run we check if the gyro sensor counted up during 10 seconds. If yes, we can reset the gyro sensor by plugging the port out and in. When you plug in, it's important, that the robot don't moves. Otherwise you will get still a drift. This can also happen when you start the robot and move it while it's starting...

      When the model turned enough the string just falls down and we turn the model with the string and a motor and with the robot, that drives backwards

      What do you mean? The wires are all connected to the motors and sensors in the robot. The attachments or modules don't need a motor or sensor with a wire

      We use pneumatics. The pressure seems to be enough

      Mindstorms Man - SWARM Oh sorry, we thought you meant how the robot stays on the wall. To put the Attachment onto the robot we have four small holes in the case of the robot. Two at the front and two at the back. The attachment just fit in these holes and to put it on, we have to stretch it a bit...

      brickSAPplied - Thanks! I should probably say biomimicry or wall hang, but anyway, I a but confused. How do the four holes keep the attachment from falling off? So the 4 beams go into the 4 holes in the robot, then is there a locking mechanism? How does the locking mechanism work?

      It's a mechanism using rubber bands. We have to pull the rubber bands and load the shooter with a manure and the robot releases it with a motor

      Jie Yang Oh The rules aren't the same everywhere. Our strategy wasn't allowed in central europe for example, but at the World Festival it was legal...

    Nice but you did cheat on animal conservation. You can only switch one animal at a time as the rules said Before the Match starts, hand-place your
    choice of one animal in your tray of the
    Animal Conservation Mission Model.

      The rules just say AFTER turning the model once you only can exchange one animal at the same time. We wrote a mail to the headreferee of the World Festival, who confirmed our strategy... In Central-Europe it was forbidden in a FAQ, for us and many other teams this was just possible on an international competition.
