    i’ve just finished my first year of uni and an important thing to consider is the price of living in the area, for example how expensive will food be, how expensive would the accommodation be and things like that and also consider the student life at both of them. look at extra curricular clubs and societies and what’s around them both to see what you could do on weekends or time out of lessons. it’s a really exciting yet daunting time but you’ll make the right decision so don’t worry xx

  • @r8a899
    @r8a899 Před 4 lety +196

    I think you should really research into the student life and culture for both LSE and McGill since it makes up for such a big part of your college experience - the UK and Canada are very different! Read something from the perspective of the current students such as reddit, forums or blogs, not what’s on the college brochure since it would give you the most genuine and unfiltered opinions! Similar to you I went to an international school so I had offers between the US, UK and Canada and I chose the US in the end!

    omg dude i was in the same boat last year. went to a french school in the US so people applied everywhere around the world. I applied to Canada, US and UK and nearly went to McGill but ended up at the Uni of Exeter and honestly it's the best choice I could've made! McGill is amazing though and I know so many people there (part of the reason i didn't go) who have all absolutely loved it whereas people I know at LSE haven't liked it as much because it doesn't have the campus or community feel McGill does. And also I saw on your cons list for McGill you put that it's not world famous when in reality if you were to go to the US, UK or even in Europe all the people I've spoken to have heard of McGill and definitely think highly of it! Hope you have an amazing first year though wherever you choose to go!

    AHH, so proud of you! I was reading the comments and how you should decide at this point if you’re really torn between both lse and mcgill is the cost of living. I live in Montreal and it really depends if you choose to live in the dorms or in an apartment close to campus. The dorms for McGill are a lot of money but then again it’s your choice. For the general cost of living(food, transportation...) it’s not that bad. The stm (bus & metro) fees are 50$ a month and groceries really depend where you buy them from. I’ve never been to London before but I recommend McGill because it’s a great school and I personally want to go there. The city is wonderful and it’s different from other big cities because of the bilingualism(french and english)! Really happy for you and the choice is up to you, remember that it’s important that you’re happy with your final decision! Love you and good luck

    Congrats on getting in everywhere! That's so insane! I'm from the UK so I don't know much about McGill but know that LSE gets a loooot of mixed reviews. I've heard it hasn't got much of a sense of community, and that classes are in mostly huge and very anonymous lecture theatres. A lack of community can be true of London unis in general, but this is particularly a review I've heard for LSE. Another thing about London is that, in second and third years, students can't afford to live in central London so will often end up dotted around the city so it can be difficult to socialise with other students from uni. Obviously, there are tonnes of pros to being in London, and this isn’t something I’ve experienced first-hand (I chose Bristol over UCL for this reason) so this might not be as true as people make out! But I found at my Sixth Form that the people who wanted a strong, close-knit student community and who were keen to do lots of extracurriculars avoided London.

Montreal is an amazing city and especially great in septemeber/october and april thereafter. If you think you can bear the cold, and i mean that, (i am from the Mediterranean and i handled it and now even miss it) then choose mcgill, the vibes are amazing, canadians are super nice, there are always things to do, rain, snow, sun! another pro beyond the city and weather is the freedom to choose at mcgill: you can change your major and minor as many times as you want and take classes from different departments to help you choose. also travelling is really easy around montreal and for spring break. club and night life is beyond good and honestly, you will fall in love with montreal. i am in quarantine in my home rn and i miss it soooo much!

    McGill is a great school and Montreal is beautiful!!! From what I've heard, you can get away without knowing french in downtown Montreal, but not so much in some of the suburbs!

    Congrats on all your decisions!!! Just some advice from a Canadian, the winters in Montreal can be really rough and last longer than other countries and the school is located on a hill so it makes walking to classes difficult in the snow- but the academics do speak for themselves so just something to consider when it comes to Canada😊

    I’m a second year uni student in Montreal and there are a few things you should be aware of before coming to MTL. It’s really important be aware of how important it is to speak some level of French here. I tricked myself into thinking I wouldn’t need it as much just to realize it’s quite hard to get jobs and internships with only English. You also need to take into consideration that it’s really cold here for most of the school season. I think people usually underestimate how cold it is. The pros are definitely that transportation is easy around the city and McGill is surrounded by a lot to do. I go to Concordia which is not really far and you’ll have a lot of places near campus that is easy to get to even by foot. Montreal is really beautiful during Spring, Fall, and Summer, especially the summer. There’s a lot of events for students and the McGill campus is beautiful

    coming from a Montrealer who is definitely going to be applying to McGill next year I highly recommend. The school is extremely well known internationally and offers a lot to your college experience. There is something called frosh before you start that is like rush minus the sorrorities its based on your department and its like two weeks of straight parties, boat parties, on a. beach and scavenger hunts bar hops and many more. Montreal as a city is amazing we have two languages and it is cutlery diverse. Our streets int he old town are very European and its a good place to travel around North America from

    Omg so exciting!!! This is the exact direction I wanna go in as well so I’m really looking forward to further follow your journey and to maybe get some inspiration along the way. I started my Econ Bachelor this year in the Netherlands (I’m German as well). I also didn’t even apply in Germany tho bc I really wanted to have an international focus and environment during my studies + study in English, which wasn’t really offered anywhere where I would have been willing to move to in Germany , but sadly I failed to take care of my applications early enough and therefore it was pretty hard for me to find something outside of Germany but within the EU that would fit these criteria whilst also being affordable without a scholarship. So I ended up choosing NL and I couldn’t be happier!! My dream was to do my exchange semester at LSE bc that’s the only way I could afford it but sadly I kinda struggled to settle in at the beginning and hence my grades aren’t good enough to even think of applying. That’s really such a crazy opportunity for you and I love the direction as well and hope I can see how LSE is tackling it by watching your videos. I met quite a few internationals now due to my studies who did IB on international schools as well and I do have to say I think it’s exceptional how well they prepare you for university and application to it. Ofc you can’t really expect from a state school to provide you with help regarding applications for unis abroad but I really would have wished it was a bigger topic in my final years, kinda felt left alone with it from time to time.
