- In the latest episode of Top Gear, Chris Harris took on the RAF in a very special race. You may remember, that some years ago, TG pitched Eurofighter Typhoon against a Bugatti Veyron. But technology's moved on a little since then, so it was time for a rematch.
The RAF chose their supersonic F35 fighter jet, and Harris opted for the jaw-dropping 250mph McLaren Speedtail - a slippery, low-drag hypercar with a centre driving position. Here Chris takes us on a tour of the McLaren and explains what it's like drifting a £2 million piece of exotica.

The three seats are for Jeremy, Hammond and Their girlfriend James.
I'm quite sure Clarkson wouldn't fit the center seat. And it would be rather strange seeing Hammond in the middle with the other blokes on the sides.

Maybe just me, but anything with a real engineering purpose behind it, I find it beautiful. The vents and find and stuff on the Senna - beautiful to me. The wheel covers and the extra long tail on this - beautiful too!
imagine Hammond in the driver but Clarkson in a passenger and doing a 1000 mile road trip.

It's difficult to appreciate the extraordinary shape of the Speedtail without seeing it in person. There are a number of subtle yet clever features hidden in the bodywork to meet the cooling and downforce requirements while keeping a minimal drag coefficient. It looks so much more spectacular in real life than it does on a screen.
It reminds me of the Langheck Porsches they used to run at Le Mans, ironically. It looks like nothing McLaren has ever built, in a good way.
This is something I love about McLaren. Every generation of their cars look way different than the last. Everything can be changed to make a better car. That’s what I think makes Mclaren so special.
The front is exactly the same as most of their recent models. The rest of it however...
McLaren made a speedtail version of the F1, the shape is similar to that.

Having seen this up close for the making of the film it's easily one of the prettiest cars I've clapped eyes on. Beautiful and fast and aerodynamic without looking like it's been smothered in glue and driven through the performance products bin at Halfords.
The seating arrangement is suspiciously similar to Geoff, the TG gangs electric car.

What I love is that this and the Senna are polar opposites and their unique styling is just beautiful, what a dream to have both in your garage
I’ve always thought a lot of the modern McLarens have looked pretty similar. So it’s good to see them launching two cars that are as you say are total opposites.

I really like it how McLaren isn't chasing that 300 mph mark and how they're just going for 250mph because in the end, thats really all you're gonna need. It looks fantastic and different in a really good way!! And I'm really looking forward to watching this episode. Good job Top Gear👍

And that's been my view ever since the the press photos were released.
I was absolutely gobsmacked that McLaren had decided to do something so different to the norm and I think they did an incredible job of accomplishing the vision of Speedtail.

Koenigsegg Agera RS has a higher top speed, doesn't look weird, 25 units total (No depreciation), and doesn't burn down like a lot of McLarens (sorry Bruce)
Nah the agera RS just sits in garages as collectors items. Also i find it remarkable how as soon as one "famous" youtuber has a Mclaren that catches fire, the whole world is convinced that only mclarens are prone to this. Do i need to remind you how many huracans catch fire? How many ferraris and how many porsches have gone up in flames over the past few years?
Fact is the clientele that buy these vehicles are surprisingly often very young and inexperienced. How often do you see videos of people redlining their brand new GT3 or 570s at stand still just to capture the exhaust note for their followers on social media.
McLaren should name it "peacock."
If any car today could have beat that plane it would be the regera which has proven itself to be the fastest accelerating and braking car today. Much quicker than even the chiron

Are you referring to the carbon spats on the front wheels?
Those stay fixed in place. There is a conventionally balanced wheel behind them.
I felt the way chris grabbed the cover at 6:16. He was definitely thinking "that looked wobbly"
Cars from the 40s and 50s had some clasic (no puns intended) lines that slowly faded over the decades in a sea of boxes, ovals and whatever the Aztek was....... At first I didn't like the speedtail.. A bit to 50s future cars that never came to be (luckly) then I realized the Speedtail tapped into those designs we loved. Nice swooping line out the rear. Love that ass... Only negative part of the rear I have is the tail lights. Looks like someone said well we are going to need tail lights. Click Click done. What's for lunch? Having the lights built into that trailing edge line all the way across and down the sides behind the rear tires would have really worked for me. Amazing car.
Look's wise it's preety mediocre when it comes to Hyper and Super cars

Of course they scan them - Otherwise the amount of work is mind boggling, since every single feature down to the air conditioning switches in the interior is exactly right.
@@thesprawl2361 They uses scans as the basis and then base the final 3D model on them. I've done some 3D scanning and while it works and is really quick, it's also a very messy affair that requires a ton of manual cleanup if you want to use the meshes in a real-time application that is limited in terms of how many polygons it can push. Imagine digitizing a perfect box the size of a car. No curves, no weird edges, everything is straight. This would only take up a handful of polygons if you modeled it by hand, but if you scanned it, it would be a mess of hundreds of thousands of polygons, one more ill-shaped than the next. A real car, unless it's from the 80s, is of course far more complex, but simply digitizing it would still result in a messy mesh.
Also, it's not like the work is done once you've got the model. Texturing and rigging take up plenty of time as well and then you have to tune the handling model so that it feels plausible to the player.
Koenigsegg goes shopping with this car 🤣...but Chris just forgot about them 🤷🏼♂️
well this is more beautyful and less performance focused then most Koeniggseggs. So I for one would choose the Speedtail
Konrad von Schnitzeldorf well, the McLaren Speedtail has copied a lot of the Koenigsegg Regera design. Also with the Regera you get 1600HP with a phenomenal one gear system...
Only thing I’m worried about is... how fast can you get out in the case of a fire?
I just hope the build quality is good enough.

I think speedtail (although I don't like its front design) looks more like f1 than t50, also T50 don't looks good as f1 or p1.
T50 all day. 12k rpm, manual, sub 1000kg weight* and Cosworth developed NA V12 (all pre release figures obviously) *The speedtail is 10kg (I believe) heavier than the Jesko at 1430kg

I’d still take the F1 or Gordon Murray’s new car the T50 over this if I could.
This is just a reskinned McLaren sharing very similar components to the rest of the range, including a soulless FI V8. The original McLaren seems the very antithesis of this.
Chris knows his cars and he offers a great and honest review of any car. He is without doubt the best presenter on TG currently.
When will they show the entire car in pan view?
I'd love to see this guy presenting the main show and replacing McGuiness. I get having a TV presenter to go with car experts, but not two TV presenters and one car guy.

BASITH PH I would take the senna because corners are a thing, and we could clearly see in the video the speedtail is pretty much only good in a straight line. Both cars are great, but I prefer the senna.

McLaren deliberately made the two for different types of buyers. I'd take Speedtail, personally, because I'm more into GT's than track cars.

I agree with Jack, the PP2 chassis of the Speedtail looks so much better than what the original release photos looked like. The shape is a little more softer and refined. The front wheel covers are not nearly as dramatic. And the bronze red color on the PP2 looks so much more svelte on the car than the ice blue on the release chassis. But that's just my opinion for whatever it's worth.
I want to see some normal cars with a 3 or 5/6 seat layout (an extra row)
The central driving position is perfect, it's what I've always wanted a car to be, I'd rather have an F1 just for the manual though.
Even in a daily driver I'd be fine with the faff of climbing over to that seat.
I hope McLaren has sorted out their reliability and customer support !
They have never had a problem for their customers that buy there hyper cars! Its the lesser models customers that get those problems, they are still a young company though, i just wish i was rich enough to be able to have those problems, alas im not so i will just have to put up with my corsa!!
