    It is safer to calculate theta with your first method. In the second method, you would need to subtract the length of slab upstairs from the Run before you calculate the tangent.

    There is almost no need for this calculation in any real construction situation. Setting up for the rise and run is the important step. It is obvious that you have never constructed a staircase or have any construction site experience. I am a carpenter with a degree in Engineering and 40 years of experience. Also, stair layout and construction is never done in feet, always inches, unless you use metric measurements, then it really doesn't matter. Rounding the slope like you did in the calculation introduces a great deal of error in the overall length of the stair stringer.
