    I also own the Canon 6D and I absolutely love it for astrophotography, especially when combined with my Sigma 20mm F1.4 Art lens. Although I consider myself a novice in astrophotography, I have taken some amazing shots over the past two years, including a selfie with the Milky Way, shining my torch vertically upwards on top of Moel Arthur, Wales!

    The other nice thing about EF mount is that it is just larger enough than other mounts that, if you're content using manual focus lenses, you can get inexpensive, very low profile mount adapter rings to use lenses from other mount types, and it doesn't distort the image or affect infinity focus. I have a Canon 1300D and a Nikon D600, and I can easily adapt all my manual Nikon lenses, so I kept only a small handful of my Canon lenses when I bought the Nikon. Most of my lenses are the Samyang/Rokinon.
    My brother had a 6D MkI fall into his lap a few months ago, and he's been very pleased with it. He'll be even more pleased after he sees this video.

    Very helpful video Thankyou! I don’t have a 6D however I did just pick up a 5D mkii with only 10000 on the shutter count it was a steal. Had been shooting astrophotography on my 70D before hand, but always wanted full frame. I’ve not used the 5D mkii for astrophotography yet, however with the low light I have done, it absolutely blows the 70D out of the park. The colours are also absolutely beautiful. So I am super excited to see how the astrophotography pictures turn out.

    Great video - I dread to think how many frames I have taken with my modified 6D that I picked up about 18 months ago. I use it with widefield lenses and attached to the back of telescopes. It's a reliable workhorse. The only down side is the non-flip out screen and the dreadfully slow wifi. I use Magic Lantern to give me an in camera intervalometer which makes it so convenient for travel astrophotography.

    Have to agree 100% on the 6D. I still have it and I now also own an R6 and sure - the newer camera is cleaner at higher ISO - but the difference is not THAT big. I still use it for timelapse and stills, while filming and vlogging with the R6.

    Great video. When is was getting into astrophotography I got the 6D mkii when it came out and wished I'd gotten the mki quickly after that.
    It is now my timelapse camera and my main camera is the a7iii and I've gotten some good shots and some crackers, both astro and daylight.
    You're bang on right about Sony's fast primes, I've got the 14mm GM and 24mm GM and together they weigh less than my Samyang 14mm f2.4 that lives on my 6D mkii.
    The biggest thing though has been getting out and shooting when I can between work, clouds and full moons the opportunities have been limited.
    By the way, is there any chance that you could make this month's WITNS subject clouds. I might stand a chance of getting a shot of those.

The only other option I feel like that comes close is the Nikon D600 which benefits from ISO invariance, but at least here in the US the 6D’s are just easier to find. Spot on answer, still using my 6d, been dropped, dragged, been in silly minus temps and still churns out pics like it was new, thing is built like a tank lol, match it with any Samsung lens and you've got a bloody good combo, my preference is the 35mm f1. 4, rarely off it... Also got the A7iii which again is a beast of a camera, but has its issues mainly with the menu system, no where near as easy as Canon, also still got A7s as a back up 🤣 But Canon for both day and night pics really can't be best.

    I'll try to add some points to the video. One thing I almost left Sony is the they dont protect the sensor until the very new ones just released. Canon starts without it too on RP but since R they do it. And for landscape cleaning the sensor just sucks. On the contrary, Sony had since A7III built-in tool that eliminate the remote control at leas until 30s. This is something that really sucks in all of them. Why just do not leave the user to choose ANY time expsoure and sequence of photos on camera? It is more thing to carry, more batteries which if something goes wrong ruins all the night. Also since the A7III Sony has two memory slots what Canon offers only for high end expensive new models. The new Sony releases also have a flip screen missing on the previously models and it really sucks and frequently requires horrible position to check the liveview. Canon most cheaper cameras offers flip screen many years ago. If I could ask for simple modifications on these cameras I would ask: 1- setting any exposure time and sequence of stills on the camera without remote controls; 2- zoom of more than 10x; 3- double card slots on all models; 4- flip screen on all models; 5- when bracketing file naming should keep the number but add a tag like A,B,C... making easly identified on the computer; 6- creation of astro section definition where you can set after several shots that the camera automatically close the sensor protection and perform a certain number of darks automatically and also naming the files according to the section number.

    One of the biggest problems i have with the canon 5d mii is that the live view and optical viewfinder don't allow enough light or brightness to easily compose the frame. I've heard the miii is much better for astrolandscape photgraphy. Does anybody know if the live view mode with 6d allows for easy viewing in the near dark?

    2:27 what about the bias of the market representativity ? If you have more 6d (because they are older and cheaper), you should divide f(best photo canon 6d) / f(market canon 6d). Having said that, yes the 6d is reknown to be a great budget camera in low light :) . After using so many camera in low light / astro.. I however think your skills and other equipment matter more. If you have a mini tracker to do longer exposure, a camera even simpler than a 6d would do better. Same thing, if you use a f1.8 instead of f2.8, you more than double the exposure time.. But that's the fun of astro, finding a balance with what we have, trying to get better when we understand all the concepts. Side note: I believe my best DSLR for astro was by far D850 (including because of the BSI sensor and the boost in live view that allows one to better see the stars and focus). Happy new year to all and clear skies :)

    I bought a used Canon 6D, and regardless of the performance, the tech was very old, and the camera was really bulky with too many buttons and less touch screen tech. I really like the Canon SL3 as crop sensor (T7i like but lighter) and Canon EOS RP for full frame mirrorless. Planning to switch to EOS R (now only in used market) with much less low light noise. These are little pricy but take remarkable pics. I've been very happy with them. They lightweight do not put too much stress on my star tracker.

    I have a Canon 6D. I'v been considering getting it astro-modded and making it my dedicated astro camera. I've taken _so_ many pictures with that thing, but just getting started with astro. I may keep it around as I get into astrophotography. The reality is that _any_ modern dSLR or mirrorless camera can at least do _some_ astrophotography - and should be the _default_ starting point for most wanting to get started. Heck, with the right mount, you could even use a modern smartphone with an existing telescope. Will you get stellar (😁) results? No, but who cares - it's a starting point.
    The cheapest camera for astrophotography work is actually the camera you already own. That doesn't mean it will be the _best_ camera except for those starting out.

    • @kalef1234
      @kalef1234 Před 2 lety +3

      another neat thing I learned this week, apparently the shutter count rating is only a rating where the shutter is gaurenteed to provide a certain level of accuracy, like say, 1/4000th of a second will be a certain degree close to 1/4000th of a second every time UNTIL that rating, then it may start to vary more. Meaning, these things can EASILY get up in the 200s and 400s of thousands of shutter counts. And for astro, who cares if the shutter is 0.5 seconds off of what you set it to? 60 seconds vs 60.5 doesn't matter to us

    3:57 - The bigger sensor IS the largest reason. Your second point can easily be tested. Place the FX lens on the crop and a full frame camera of equal level (entry, mid or high price range being equal; ie; entry level crop to entry level fx) and you'll see a MAJOR difference once you take those photos into lightroom. You'll see you'll have MASSIVE amounts more data in the images, with the sliders easily blowing out the image quickly with very low range of processing and the sliders having a massive range due to the increased image data, shooting the exact same lens. I know. I started with a crop body (Nikon d3400 entry level crop) and upgraded to a FX body, Nikon d610, entry level full frame) and moved up to a full frame keeping the same full frame lens. The difference was HUGE! HUGE! HUGE! So much so, I wish I simply started with the FX. Don't even mess with a crop unless you're doing deep space. For landscape they simply can't compete. Not even in the same ballpark. Sensor size beats crop to fx lens. I used a crop lens also on the crop body it got nearly the fx lens results on it. So close in fact, I wouldn't have bothered springing for the FX lens until I got the FX body if I had to do it again. The test is quick and easy if you can borrow a crop body and stick your full frame lens on it. You'll see it wont even come close. That big sensor is the BOSS when it comes to low light. Therefore I have to respectfully disagree with the larger sensor only being a small part of the story. My first hand experience shows me it's the major part of that story.

      just put that D5600 on a star tracker then it isn't so bad. granted you can do that with FF too, but I'm just saying I'd rather have a 60D on a star adventurer than a sony A7 III limited to 20 seconds or less

      @AlynWallace  Před 2 lety +1

      The test is unfair and doesn't conclude that the size of the sensor is the factor. The reason you saw those results will be because the pixel width of the pixels on the full frame was wider and there was more room to space the pixels out. The only way to perform that test fairly is to use the same lens on a full frame camera and crop sensor camera that have the same pixel width for each pixel. Such that when you crop the full frame image by 0.66x it has the same amount of pixels as the image as the crop sensor image. I'll link an article below

      @@AlynWallace OK, so the reason as to why the larger sensor performs better in low light compared to the smaller sensor isn't so much because its size reflects more light as it is that it holds more pixels, therefore produces more information in a photo.
      While selecting a camera, crop vs full frame, the exact reason doesn't need to be known, so long as it is known, that a larger sensor will produce much higher quality photos than a crop sensor can, while using a full frame lens.
      I wasn't really arguing the reason as to why it's the case, so much as I was that it IS the case, and the lens crop vs fx will in fact be a much smaller factor than it will be between a crop and fx body. As I found out firsthand when using a Rokinon 24mm F1.4 on both a D3400 crop and a D610 FX body. The photo quality was simply not even comparable, even though I kept the same exact FX lens.
      Main point is, in my (however limited, with only one crop and one full frame body experiment) crop to full frame, blew lens difference out of the water. With a crop lens, producing near same quality on the crop camera as the fx lens did on it.
      In my limited experience between crop and full, shooting nightscapes, the large part of the story was a larger sensor drastically improved the quality of my photos, probably 10x the difference between keeping a dx lens on or using a fx lens.
      If there are high end crop sensor cameras with the same or near pixel count, resulting in the same data being recorded in the photo as full frame, it's probably more expensive than a nice used pro fx body anyway though, right?

      I'm not going to lie, the 6D is under $500 on ebay. I would get that over any APS-C camera. It's cheaper than a new Rebel T7i or whatever and that's incredible. BUT if you were going to use a star tracker and get 1 to 2 minute exposures, then any canon/nikon APS-C dslr is a great choice. The 60D on a tracker will probably do really well since those are like $250
