    • Classroom Aid - Giant ...
    In this chapter we cover the Giant Impact Hypothesis as the starting point for the age of the modern Earth-Moon system. We’ll see a Fulldome illustration on what it might have looked like. We then cover Oxygen Fractionation and use water evaporation to show how it works. We build the Terrestrial Fractionation line and show that all oxygen on Earth falls on this line. We then show that meteors like Allende do not fit on the line, but Moon rocks do. We then begin our deeper dive into how we date rocks using Radiometric Dating with uranium and lead. We review the discovery of radiation with its alpha, beta and gamma rays. We cover half-life and the exponential law of radioactive decay including the uranium to lead decay chains. We also cover the Chemical Abrasion - Isotope Dilution - Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) method for dating zircon crystals in rocks found here on Earth. This includes a look at how the Memorial University of Newfoundland does it. We end with the age of the oldest Earth and Moon rocks.

    This is the type of REAL science we should be able to find on TV on the "science channel."
    Instead, they have "unsolved mysteries," "ghost hunters" and other B.S. Worse, those crummy UNscientific shows are swamped with more commercial content than actual program material.
    Here, a kindly retired person uses his intelligence, education and continual curiosity to create concise, lucid explanations of complex subjects. He does all of this for the good of education, on his own, without a big TV budget. And no commercials!
    My father was friends with Phylo T. Farnsworth, the man widely credited for invention of TV. Phylo imagined his invention could educate the world for free and bring high culture to everyone regardless of economic class. What he envisioned was content like THIS.
    When Phylo saw what pandering profiteering people did with his invention, he literally SHOT his TV with a shotgun, and never allowed another one in his house.
    Of course, much of YT's content is garbage too. But when a rare precious gem like David Butler shows up, it elevates the aggregate intellectual mien.
    THANK YOU David. You are slaying the Goliath of CZcams stupidity. In the process, you help students learn faster and more intuitively. That can only be for the greater good. It's the highest and best use of this platform.
    Stay healthy! Educate. Resist tyranny and live free.

    How do feel about the theory of two moons being created after the collision of Theia? Given that the surface of the moon is much thicker on the far side vs the side facing us, the second smaller moon merged with the larger one shortly after the impact making the one side thicker. The thinner side facing us has dark seas which are lava beds from impacts. The impacts were able to penetrate the crust at the time to allow the magma beneath to flow up to create the seas we see now. The far side has none of these dark spots because impacts were unable to penetrate the thicker crust.
    I was hoping to see this in your animation at the beginning of this video, but it wasn't there. Ergo, how do you feel about that moon creation theory?

    Hate to be a bummer but your first track is incorrectly labeled as Beethoven. I know this piano concerto very well as i can actually play some of it, I believe its composed by Edward Grieg

    How small was earth in the beginning? Do asteroids come from the sun,, did earth come from the sun? Did our solar system grow from a seed?

    • @r-gart
      @r-gart Před 4 lety +2

      The solar system sprouts from a gas cloud. Gravity takes over and it condenses into small chunks, that lead to bigger chunks and eventually, the sun and the planets!

      @@r-gart sorry but Sun forms first and then planets are formed from remaining debris. Planets and the smaller rocks flying around used about 1% of what was left

    0:06 "That's 900 pounds on Earth"... My dear David, the US is not the entire Earth. You should definitely know better. The metric system is actually the most used measurement system in the world. Only three countries don't use the metric system: the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar.

    The Moon is "Birthed" from the earth, it happens every 13 000 years. Think of Jerusalem, the Temple Mount to be precise, and read your Biblical mythology with that in mind. The next one is due very soon, and needs to be 20% larger than the present one, with the reason being our second sun will have returned. Extra lumens need to be reflected, or it'll be like looking at Medusa.
