I saw the goat man, followed him almost to the Smelter Store, in Tennessee. I was about 9 yrs old and lived in McCaysville Ga. I'm pictured in the photo holding a pack Pepsi cola.
I remember him and his goats and all that noise his wagon and goats made. People say he was stinky but I don't remember him stinking. He was so kind, I will never forget seeing him.
I’m a 44 years old Tennessean and never saw the goat man. However, many people I know of older generations recall seeing him. It does seem that in the South that truly old times are not forgotten. How touching when some one long gone is fondly recalled.
Yes, I live in Cleveland, Tennessee and remember him well. When he would come through town, it seemed like practically everything would stop. He would parade through town with his goat drawn wagon and a slew of goats.
Thank you for this memory. I remember him coming through North Georgia up or down US Highway 41 camping out on Tunnel Hill Ridge when I was a small child in the early sixties. My Dad would take us to check out his goats. We thought it was the greatest thing.
Yes we use to stop on hwy. 41 in the Tunnel Hill and Dalton area. My aunt Eula would stop and let me look at the goats 🐐. Loved those days, they were exciting and learning times and simple safe days. 😥
Saw the goat man in Englewood Tennessee is early 60s, the whole town was abuzz...was an amazing experience, bought some postcards, but what remember the most was th smell, would bring tears to ur eyes!
We had a goat man here in Alaska in the 80's through 2015 or so. He didn't travel but lived with his goats in his house.. He had a girlfriend of all things. She eventually told him it was the goats or her. He looked at her for a minute and said "wail, I'll have to keep my goats." They remained friends up to his death at 99yo. Very smart, sharp, well liked man, he just....really liked goats!
It would only be the "civilized" and "schooled" people who would find offense with a man like this. He had seemingly few belongings, but was flagrantly rich in character. I wonder if there's still people like him today.
I'm from Anniston Alabama. He came through my town many times, leaving family and neighbors with enduring stories and memories that would last a lifetime. I don't recall ever seeing him myself, I may have been too young.
I met with the goat man when I was a youngster in Attalla Alabama at Del_,Ed Speed Way. What a memory that was we gave the goats a soft drink during the visit.
I heard an old timer at Hardee’s breakfast club telling of this guy coming through Springfield Tennessee after a new highway (hwy41)was cut through. They said he stunk!!!
Well done! I loved the inclusion of the 8mm footage. I often times tend to stray from phone interviews(for some reason i feel like they have to be conducted in person), but this is proof that they work.
I knew him as a kid. We all remember him. My mom would take me to see him and buy goat milk. He used to give me Mexican Jumping beans. I remember sitting on his knee and him showing me them the first time. He was kind. He was nothing to be afraid of. I don't recall the smell really, but I was familiar with farms and animals already I guess so I am sure I noted it but didn't think it remarkable.
What a beautiful story my dad had a friend he rode a motorcycle big scary dude who hated children... He took a shine to me long story short he was in bad accident on his bike and couldn't ride anymore. My dad and his friends use to put me on his lap in sidecar and ride us all over.
I saw the goat man near Macon once and twice again walking through Dublin down Stonewall Street in front of my grandmother’s house. I wanted to go out and see the goats but my mother wouldn’t let me.
I remember seeing the goat man a couple of times when I was just about 8-10. We lived in Bryson City NC along highway 19. Daddy had told me about him for several years. He was quite a sight but just as nice as he could be. We drank goat milk for about a week after he went through. Great memories ❤️
🙂🖐👍🏴☠️🇨🇭🇺🇲 In middle 1960"s alot of folks had no phones, it was big when goatman was coming! It was like a carnival or high-school ballgame or wresting or country music show. Good times!!!
I live in north Georgia, Chattooga county and I felt like I needed to research a bit about this after I saw a couple news paper article in one of the local delis
When I was little there was a man in Jackson Ohio that went by the name of Goat Man.... When I first started watching this video I thought it had to be about him or maybe his father.... Great story and great video.... Thank you for sharing this it brought back childhood memories.... 😊
@@michelewalburn4376 he always wore a suit that was super dirty and covered in goat hoof prints.... From what i remember it was a burgandy color suit....
Mr. McCartney would be out on 120 between Duluth and Lawrenceville, we'd hear that he was in the area and pile in the car. The goats nibbled my sweater cuffs.
I was born in North AL in 87 and as a kid I remember a few kids talk about the goatman as if he was a haunting figure of some sort. Don’t know if it’s related but just found it interesting.
That is INSANE! How cool is that??!!! Characters we have had in history......never ceases to amaze me. I would've used this to discipline my children; "You better mind and study in school or we gon' sell you off to the goat man! Won't see you for a year!" LOL
My brother saw him many times. He wrote a story about him called (the goat man of south tunnel) his adventures of seeing him . The goats in the back would push his wagon up (BOOGER) hill !
I remember my grandmother taking me to see him in the late 50s. He traveled highway 301 in South Carolina. I remember the smell and all of the junk on the wagon. He did cuss alot.
I remember my Grandmother Jean talking about this man. I saw a similar man riding in a horse drawn wagon in Arizona. It was covered in hand painted Christian signs. Have you heard of this man? Also my Grandmother spoke of Gypsies coming to Cedartown GA every year and putting on a party. I’d like to see a video on that.
I have a new goal in life. It's actually a long time goal, but I'm still trying to convince my wife. I keep telling her that she is not happy working and living in this crap world, so she might as well get on with my goat plan. She's being stubborn. I try and say that we don't HAVE to smell like a goat. I can rig us up a solar shower and you can dry clothes on a goat cart the same as you can dry clothes on a line. It'll be OK. Nope, she just don't want me to have anything I want.
why was he attacked, and by who? and who would kill goats??? poor man. hey, they shoulda set up an outdoor shower with scented soap when he was expected to arrive in town, and made an ordinance "goatman must shower before camping in village" he probably woulda gotten the hint and enjoyed it. to tell you the truth, a vocation like goatman was my soul ambition as a youth, so i tuned in, turned on, and dropped out just like dr. leary suggested. trouble was, some little gal was gunnen for me and lured me into a cozy situation. she was so nice that we had 5 children and i had to work my butt off to care for our brood. so did she as a good wife, mother, cook, launderess, and domestic peace keeper. the kids are all gone and settled as is she, and now at 72 im ready to find a few goats and ride. should be all right if i just stay away from signal mountain and bathe once in a while. see you along the road, hope you don't smell me coming or beat me up.
I was blessed to meet this man and his goat wagon several times as a child, growing up in Cobb County, GA.
