  • @StephanieG1

    I was going to write that we don't have once general circulation silver coins here in GB. However that is not true. Between 1582 and 1919 British 'silver' coins were .925 fine silver. From 1920 until 1946 British Florins,shillings and half-crowns were .500 fine silver. However after 1947 there was zero silver content in the above coins.
    I have never seen any of the coins above as they ceased to be legal tender in Britain around 1970. The whole point of this comment is that the widespread availability of decades old 90% silver is yet another example of the many advantages American silver stackers have over British and European stackers. However things are the way they are. I have learnt to come to terms with silver being much more expensive here and I have decided to stop moaning and research other pm options. I have come up with a stacking strategy that will suit my fellow Europeans. I will tell you what it is: buy 1/10 and 1/4 oz gold Britannias. The premiums are reasonable and there is no VAT.

    • @Spegtacular
      @Spegtacular  Před 5 lety +1

      I had another British member ask me what would be good for him to stack and luckily I suggested your Britannia with a question mark at the end. I guess that I had guessed correctly then :)
      Where our “junk silver” is still found today and removed by collectors from circulation, I believe the British powers purposely removed those coins themselves.

  • @oldschoolrr6077
    @oldschoolrr6077 Před 5 lety

    Speg, thanks so much for the video. There are 2 things that you do not mention. First is. frac. silver is almost always .999 silver while "junk" is .90 silver. World demand is overwhelmingly for .999 and .9999 silver. The other is, if you have to sell your "junk" silver, you take a larger hit when you sell, for the same reason above. IMO the only reason to hold "junk" silver is in case of an SHTF Economic Event.

    • @Spegtacular
      @Spegtacular  Před 5 lety

      I mention that you’d need $1.40 in dimes to make up 1oz of silver and that’s because they’re 90% which is not a big deal at all. The simplicity of making 90% into .999 is so insanely easy even I can do it ;)
      That said, a larger hit vs fractional silver? Or are you saying a larger hit vs 1oz bullion? Fractional silver will destroy you upon selling. I’d blame people selling just any old place for a loss. I have always gained because I know that silver doesn’t have to be sold to a shop but can be sold person to person because it is money.

    Over the last four decades, when precious metals enjoyed bull markets, junk US silver coins often achieved premiums of 20% to 30% over spot. During the Y2K scare junk silver coins carried a *50% PREMIUM* over bullion products. The premium on old gold and silver has a solid track record of periodically spiking, 09' had a *40% PREMIUM* on common junk, Washington's and Rosies... *even higher on Mercs and Walkers and pre-33.* They again spiked in 2013 and 15'. I have never seen the available metal as right now, Mercs, Walkers, Barbers, SLQ's all just a tick above melt. Here is a chart on premiums, it only covers the last 8 years but it is a cycle that I have seen repeated over the years. Looking historically, there is a good chance this cycle will repeat.

      Two grams of silver with these pieces that I have an example of would cost about $6 (not including shipping of around $5 if that’s your only purchase). Now the value in silver of those two gram pieces are approximately $1 (again, not including shipping). I can’t tell those who are new to stacking that paying $6 for every $1 worth of silver is a wise use of their money. At that rate, they’re better off holding their cash.
