Antique Manual BenchGrinder Restoration - Workshop DC
Hello guys, how are you doing?
In this video i show you how to restore a antique manual bench grinder.
This tool was used to sharpen knifes, axes and etc.
I unfortunately don't know the brand that make this grinder and how many years this tool have.
I found the grinder in a scrap yard.
To begin the restoration i remove the first the screw that hold in the bench, then i disassemble the other parts with a plier, screwdriver and other tools.
The inside of the grinder was in a good condition but there was a lot old grease.
I washed all parts with a strong degreaser which makes the old paint melts and leave the surface.
After that i put all the parts in a vinegar bath for 1 day.
There was some cast imperfections so i smooth them with a file.
With a benchbrinder i brushwire all the parts, shine brish will be the finish of some parts.
Used rust converter on grinder surface.
I made new covers because the old ones had broken parts.
So I painted it with 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of vintage green.
I also restored the old washers that hold the stone.
The crank and wooden handle were missing so I made new ones.
I also put some wax on the wood handle.
Now everything is ready to assemble.
I put a lot of grase inside of the grinder to make it work more smooth.
I bought a new stone and put it on it to test.
The final result was pretty good for me.
    What do you think?

Needs a bigger grinding stone, the original likely was a sandstone block that was almost touching the table surface. Still have a single gear stage one around, with the original stone in it as well, which was used by my father for years. Should pull it out and dress the stone up, it has been well used over the decades. Pack up the space between the shaft and the stone with kraft paper strips, to keep it running true, there should be almost no gap, though newspaper works well there as a substitute.

Yep, the only Stone that I find with the tiny hole on center was this one, so I used this one. Thanks for comment Sean! ❤️

Really? I wouldn’t have a problem with it, then again, I would have also been involved in the restoration.
