Analyzing reference tracks is one of the best ways to become a better music producer. So in this tutorial, I'm going to show you how to use some amazing FREE analyzer plugins. Moreover, you will learn some valuable techniques for critical listening so you really understand what's going on in your favorite songs.
Reference tracks are a crucial part of the music production process, and understanding how to analyze them effectively can make all the difference in your own tracks. In this video, we'll cover everything from the frequency spectrum and loudness to dynamic range and stereo width.
We'll be using some of the best analyzer plugins out there, including Voxengo Span, Youlean Loudness Meter, and Flux Stereo Tool. With these tools, you'll be able to analyze your reference tracks like a pro and gain a deeper understanding of how they work.
And, as promised, I'll even reveal my personal favorite (paid) referencing plugin at the end of the video.
Whether you're into Techno, EDM, House, or any other electronic music genre, this tutorial is exactly what you need. So grab your headphones, fire up Ableton Live (or any other DAW), and let's dive into analyzing some reference tracks!

After watching some of your videos I realize that 90% of what people teach on CZcams is mostly wrong or miss guided. It feels like they want to seem more professional than they are. Or that for a bedroom producer it dossent matter, cuz the songs won't be played in a club, only on their home speaker. =) You are really teaching me a lot, and its easy to understand. Thank you!=)
Finally some sense out there about LUFS, in general! Great video!
Aaah, another great tutorial by philip. What a way to start the day having coffe and watching your video! Thank you for using my track 'Inertia', very interesting to see how you analyze the full mix of it. Put things into perspective how another set of ears looks at it :) Learnt some things too :)
Perfect, glad that “even you” (as someone more experienced than most viewers) got something out of it!
Very well explained and well spoken. Danke!
Thank you and: Bitte, gern geschehen ;-)
wow super nice, have youlean installed since ages but never used it lol
really enjoying ur videos since i got ur channel recommended, thank u for all this reliable advise !!
Hey Nikita, thanks so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it. If there's anything you'd like me to make a video about in the future, feel free to share it with me!
Great tutorial! It gave me overall understanding of the spectrum analyzer tool and ways to implement it in my mixing sessions. I'm pretty sure training my ears to pick up and interpret the information will be the more difficult part of the learning process, but I set my foot on the right path 😅 Greetings from Poland, thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
Yeah, less theory, more action ;-) Don't worry, you're going to see massive benefits soon and you will get a deep understanding of how everything is connected frequency-wise in a mix.
Started watching your tutorials, so far among the best yet so I'm following.... I am producing psy trance but I think most rules work regardless even if there are some universal differences also in between the techno World and (psy) trance.. Thanks a lot for great tutorials!
Another excellent tutorial.. You show how to use and apply what you are explaining. Many others just go down a list of what they can do without showing you how to apply it.
"Show don't tell" is something that I've learned from one of my mentors. I try to apply it as good as I can :) To add to this, I do my best to then also tell the "why" behind it. My hope is that the people who watch the videos adopt the mental modals (if they want) and immediately implement them. Thanks for noticing and for your kind words. I really appreciate it!
@@pickyourselfofficial One more thing--Metric AB has a new version its Beta testing. It's amazing. I was lucky to get to test it because I had some issues and they sent it to me. You might try to contact them as a YT influencer and get the latest version. I've had two updates and it just keeps getting better and better..
Oh wow, that’s great to hear, thanks for the heads-up!
Spot on sir 👊🎶
This is the way 🙌🏻💯
I'm using the AB by Adapter and I try to get better with every new mix and master :)
Perfect, that’s gonna help for sure!
Very informative, thank you. I have a lot to practice and learn. Critical listening is a fundamental skill I am trying to learn that really needs good direction and explanation with actual sounds to compare so thanks again for some insight there. Any more info with this would be much appreciated.
Please release your track asap its great!!
(where can I find more of your tracks please)?
Thanks
In Voxengo vst2 version you can arrange undelayer function with different colours for 2 tracks and see spectrum at same time
Yes, thanks for adding that!
Thank you for this video, it was really helpful. May you please explain what it is you meant by "track density?" And maybe how you would get a dense track?
Excellent explanation again !
One question, how do you get those "sausage roll" wave shape in the two tracks ?
Good info... Btw, I just picked up Metric A|B on sale, right now, as well as 2 other plugins for $49. I love when PA does a sale!
What sale did you find it on? I've been watching and haven't seen it lower than $99 lately. Thanks!
@@Romad_20 on the PA site, last month
His track is Raw/Deep/Hypnotic Techno, but in Brazil we call Techno ""reto", which is straight like you said hahaha
After using side chaining for years, only a few of my tracks sounded as I intended them to. At least when it comes to the kick and the bass. I am curious on how your method will turn out. Currently I am working on a project and without even using compression or mastering, it sounds really fat and dope. So I hope it will as well after I export it. Thank you so much for your video anyways and have a wonderful day as well
so they lower everything based on the peak LU, I suppose? Or integrated?
With “they” you mean streaming services? If so, it’s integrated. This isn’t ideal, of course, but over a long, diverse playlist it obviously is the most consistent outcome. That’s why I recommend to master for the right “feeling of density” that a track needs (looking especially at the short term values in the loudest parts, then double checking the rest).
Awesome vid. For some reason the free SPAN analyzer plug-in it's in Demo mode so it mutes audio from time to time. Do I need to make on account on their website ? It asks me to "buy" the software / add a license , but if it's free, how so ?
Have you maybe accidentally installed the pro version? If not, contact their support. This is weird.
@@pickyourselfofficial thank you for solving my problem ! I installed the Plus version by mistake. Solved now
Amazing video as always. I just have one thing i didnt really understand. you often mention density, i dont fully understand what u mean by that
Thanks so much for that comment, it reminds me that I need to make a video specifically on that concept and how it refers to loudness. I put it on my list immediately
@@pickyourselfofficial Thats great to hear, cant wait for the that juicy piece of content :). Also just wanted to say thank you, ur videos are such a blessing. I really appreciate the work you put in :D
Where is the best place to listen to your track? Did you ever release it?
Not yet, we just had our second kid 😂 But it’s on the map ;)
is bernth your brother?
Haha I have zero idea who that is 😂
@@pickyourselfofficial well you have zero idea how you and him are the same person haha
I'd go mad if I had to listen to either of those tracks for more than 20 seconds!
why?
Much of what is called "music" today is just disharmonic noise.
Bless your heart for thinking anyone would care
