Set 2 opener: China Cat Sunflower / I Know You Rider
A "Less Than Face" production..... Thanks to everyone involved in getting this footage out there. - Hudba
Weir's shredding shortly after 02:00 - I get goosebumps everytime, and then the pace just picks up and suddenly I'm in heaven.
A great version of a great song with pretty good sound and on top of that, we can hear Weir's awesome rhythmic backing. Garcia in all honor but Weir was a fucking beast on that guitar at times.
I wish I was a headlight, on a North bound train
I'd shine my light through cool Colorado rain
Bob is amazing here. I can really see what Jerry was talking about when he says he took alot of his directions in solos from Bob. Plus this is like the best china cat rider with brent I ever heard. And I LOVE Brent
Best album to here these two songs together is Europe '72 live album one of my favs all time!!!!!!!!!!
Yup. Bob Weir's role in the Dead tends to be underrated. He's so strong on rhythm guitar (backed, of course, by two great drummers) that Phil can play that low counterpoint against Jerry's solos instead of having to hold down the bottom the way most bass players must do.
Jerry deserves a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame way above any other American guitar player except maybe Chuck Berry
These Hampton shows are arguably some of the best ever played!
Gratefully Deadicated forever, thanx boys, n I miss you Jerry and Brent.
Not my first show but it was my first bootleg.....and the jam in this is absolutely one of the swaeteset you will hear. Bob....musically had one of his best years in 88.
Awesome moment starting at 8:53 - I wish I was a headlight on a Northbound train.....I WISH I WAS A HEADLIGHT ON A NORTHBOUND TRAIN.
Great take on a classic...I always LOVED it when Jerry, Bob and Brent sang together.
One of only about 5 or 6 shows I got to see w/ my Dad... Now him & Jerry are together again, looking down on us & the farm... Even though they're not physically present not a day goes by that we aren't touched & guided by them... We have been fortunate & are blessed daily...
I had tickets to this hampton run,but didnt make it to the shows.
Pulled over in georgia by the highway patrol, profiled, too many dead stickers on my 1982 Buick Electra.
They took all my money and my car ,among other things.
Still got the ticket stubs.
lemmee guess: Bad Cop, No Donut...Legalize It (with giant green fan leaf) 20 or 30 dead stickers. A Bob Marley,
I'M not as think as you Stoned I am...and then wonder why you get pulled over....lol
ouch man ouch. the darned old south. I know i'm an escapee from there.
Was at this run my b day was the next night , magic !
Bob's playing is sublime insanely weird and it fits like a glove. They are on this night
I love that you can see the people dancing in the background at the beginning of the video :)
Shows the interaction between bobby and jerry quite well.
Well, that was worth the watch!
Woohoo! I was there and lovin' it! Hampton shows -- well, the seven (or eight?) I went to were always fun - good scene, good sound inside, that big, wide open arena floor with plenty of boogie room. The Dead clearly loved playing there, hence the infamous Warlocks shows of '89.
Bob Weir is the greatest number 2 (rhythm/lead) guitarist in the world, and he can perfectly compliment anyone he plays with!!!!!
They all made it up as they went along. That was the beauty and the tragedy.
They always played great shows at Hampton and I was lucky enough to live in the area from 81-95, so saw quite a few. And, oh., the wonderful, seemingly effortless groove of Phil...bliss.
I swear I come more and more to appreciate what Bob does did
all of that and the peek-a-boo hallway dancers!
OMG... mind numbing! This 88 show is awesome. It's slightly tinny when you first start listening, but as soon as the ears adjust there is a separation of instrumentation and energy that is off the charts. 88 is an illusive year video wise, this is the first I've seen of the short hair. The Might as Well from this show is strong too. Thanks for posting big time.
That might as well from Hampton 88 rocked I started touring in 89 in my opinion there best touring year
Einfach nur Grateful Dead ..... wunderbar :-)
He should still be with us dammit..........life choices do have consequences........in his case, we all lost.
I have to say...no one chooses to be an addict. And true it may be but I feel he's owed more than that. To accuse Jerry of choosing heroin over essentially every fan and even fans that LOVE him to this very day is false. In fact..i feel more responsible for just feeling like my over enthusiastic way...as many people had with them...that touring kept rehab on a distant horizon that was reached only when the schedule allowed.
You can really hear Bobby's guitar perfectly. What a perfect compliment to Jerry.
That was a good night. Lucky enough to have been there. About ten feet in front of Phil.
When this show was played, I was awaiting the day of my first show (6-25-1988). Only out of the military for a few months, I was ready to get back to concerts...live music. Fun. Thank you, for this video.
l just listened 2 sunflower, l know you rider! u guys did a really excellent job back in the day! u guys were truckin back then 2!
I think at the european Tour 1972 in Frankfurt/Germany, my first contakt with dead, we are on the concert from19.30 to 24.00 hour and after the famos concert we drive directly from Frankfurt to Amsterdam, arived good old Amsterdam at 7.00 in the morning, a lot of speed help us.
fabulous version!
Best wishes to all from Less Than Face Productions from whom this video came.
LessThanFace Productions You guys are awesome. My bf & I appreciate all of the hard work you put into getting these shows out there, not to mention the amazing synching, editing, etc that you do.
fantastic, thanks. i saw the '86 and '87 Hampton runs, but not these. I love this view of the stage, which I've only seen in Hampton 88 vids (the Sugar-Scarlet-Fire is phenomenal..) Great to see hands on instruments of all 3 (4 really.) Interesting to me that feels a bit like Bobby is dragging Jerry along through the transition jam ... whole thing a bit expedited ..Jerry gets pretty fired up in the very last jam though.. Nice thx again
the grateful dead saved my life again today
Love the little hestitation dance Jerry and Bobby do around 6:40, approaching the mics for the vocal on "Rider". Just listening to tapes, you suspect something like that is happening when they play their semi-infinite intros, and it's fun to see it on video.
The sun will shine!
And blow all my troubles away
I only discovered them in 2003! And even so, what a long strange trip it's been. Europe was my first and it remains my favourite album :0) And the 5 who disliked this must have been too high to click on the correct thumb! Or maybe they just miss their baby from rolling in their arms...
Precious!!
no you should listen to more 70's shows. that's real badass dead at it's best
Grazie :)
I love is song:)
Awesome, I could really hear Bobby in this video, great sound!
Wow!!
Jerry sempre in primo piano. Fantastico!!!!
Another times forgotten space... Lightning in a bottle ⚡
Bobby!!!!!! Yer melting my brain ....
if you have the Deadhead achive app look up China-Rider 3\21\85 The end of China cat is probably the best guitar playing I have ever heard.
I did not upload the video of this China/Rider.. I did however videotape it.
Best wishes to all from Less Than Face Productions.
AGREED! The best ever!
Electrifying
Go Bobby Go, love when Jerry is stalking Billy to keep pace with his lead. some exciting back then...
Best wishes to all from Less Than Face Productions
That pink Modulus was an awesome guitar, although I think it vexed Bobby from time to time
Three nights of unloading
I wish I was a Headlight !!!!! miss them
God Bless
Was gonna say something along those lines. Sometimes Bobby is too buried. Love it when his guitar is right out front like this.
26 years ago today!
boy 88 was the year of shortest jams ever ...
interesting stuff from Jerry in the last Rider solo
listen to Weir on Sugaree and Stranger from Laguna Seca '87 if you wanna hear some interesting stuff from him from this era...
I do believe we were at this show....
Wow
I love the people spinning in the background :)
GRATEFUL FUCKING DEAD 😎
That's all folks !!
damn nice. wish i was a headlight.
Jerry was very animated on I Know you Rider !!
Now that's real cigarette smokin music...
Wow just twaaaaang
Maybe I should listen to more 80's shows! Just don't like the set lists as much. But this sounds very nice.
Imagine standing in front of that on a few
Wow, so that was fun! Thanks for posting. :) What is the best album to hear these two songs on?
THE BEST CHINA/RYDER I EVER HEARD IS FROM TERRAPIN TAPES 3-15 90 PHIL'S 50TH B DAY
I wish i was a GIANT headlight on a northbound train... hehehe...
Shred that wheat, boys...
I am slightly bothered by Jerrys verse scree up. makes me worried for him. but I will say that this China Rider is up there with Europe '72, imho! miss you guys Jerry and Brent.
I Wuv Woo
🌈😎🌈
....still miss Brent and the Fat Man.
I think 1990 was the last truly great dead year, like you said. Yes there are some wonderful shows after Brent died, but Jerry was running out of steam and that was that. Here are some suggestions from 1988 to 1990 ---> 7-2-88, 6-10-90, 7-12-90, 7-18-90, 7-6-90, 3-27-88, 7-15-88, 7-16-88, 7-17-88, 8-18-89, 8-19-89, 7-2-89, 10-26-89, 3-22-90, 3-28-90, 3-29-90, 3-15-90, 5-6-89, 5-7-89, 7-15-89, 7-17-89, 7-18-89, 7-19-89, 9-29-89, 9-30-89, 10-1-89, 10-18-89, 10-19-89, 10-20-89, 10-8-89, 10-9-89
they never made it all up! they were rehearsed enough that if weir started playing a riff, garcia would chime right in same riff. that's not all off the cuff, some is rehearsed. ya have to learn someones song enough to get the chorus line. wonderful transition here.
Sounds pretty jammy to me
I agree, but it's hard to call Bob a merely a rhythm guitarist. He seems to invent chords on the fly and at times (if you isolate him) it sounds like he and Jerry are at different gigs! I prefer to call him a rhythm guitarist and on-demand textural accompaniment specialist. Put on headphones and listen to him from about 5:17 to 5:38. Just ridiculous.
Too bad Jerry screwed up the lyrics did the thrd verse twice
Made up ? .....do mean the set list. or the accompanying music
@beartopbj Who cares?
This music is really dead.
Best wishes to all from Less Than Face Productions from whom this video came.
