A rare look at the Vatican Library's treasures

- No one is allowed to borrow a book from the Vatican Library except the pope. And no wonder: the archive holds some of the oldest and most precious works of art and treasure known to man. Morley Safer and "60 Minutes" cameras get to see the best of the best.
The entire library should be digitized and available for all.
It is being digitized and will take several years to complete.
haha i bet some of those might prove that religion is hoax, that most people who are considered heroes and good guys would be shown in thier real faces, so i doubt it will be available, maybe some of it that dont matter as much
Nostalgic memories Why do you protest so much people trying to find inner peace through believing a higher purpose
@@TheFIoridaMan knowing how much wars started and millions of people died cause of religion, i would say it is disgrace. Not to mention that all religions are people stupidity when they cant explain weather, nature or cosmos. I can understand spirituality, connection with nature, meditation and other things, but believing in fictional jewish character is just sad.
Nostalgic memories youre missing a major principle that all scientists and religious abide by. Science and religion don’t contradicted each other. They’re two majorly different things. One attempts to explain natural world while one attempts to explain the supernatural world. Example: the Catholic churches official stance is that the theory of evaluation is true and to go against that os to go against the church. Also what war? The crusades? When christian warrior monks were formed to protect pilgrims? The only thing id say that yeah blood shed got outta hand was the Spanish Inquisition. Aside from that all worlds wars have been fought over resources, money, and oil because we’re greedy. What teaches us to not be greedy? Oh yeah. Religion. Killing is a human thing not a godly thing. Its our flaw to bear not God’s. Dont let the actions of the wicked represent the views of the many. And if you do hate religion strictly for its blood shed why not go attack islamic videos.

I've read that they were able to save most of them. Like Derek Donaldson said, they were gone before the fire. The only place that sources consistently name is Syria. There is a place in Syria where anyone who's aware that they're there is able to read them. You are able to hand copy any of them, but they don't leave the building. That was from an old book that I read during my occult phase. But more than one book named Syria. I was gonna follow up with more research, but I lost interest.
Morley is looking old and tired. You can see that he's nearing the end of a well-lived life. He passed away in 2016. He always did a good job on this show. I'm old enough to remember when 60 Minutes was at the top of their game. Rest in Peace, Morley.
He appears to rediscover his boyish enthusiasm when looking through the old books.

@Patrick Bateman That's not history. It's an anthology of folk tales compiled in the bronze age and added to by anonymous authors and further censored and edited by the council of Nicea.
The Vatican had a very impressive art and book collection.
Those display books are very nice reproductions. No sane curator would handle the originals barehanded. Everyone in the room would have been wearing masks too.

The contents of this library is very sacred and deserves to be kept out of the hands of the public. These sacred books, pictures, etc... are not meant to be put in boxes and end up in someone's attic or basement. In this library these sacred items are being cared for from deteriorating through time. Beautiful and thank you Mr. Safer!!!
some people here at comment section thought that these curators need to wear gloves all the time! positively they were in an air conditioned room where these type of paper won’t get damaged. you wear gloves if the temperature’s quite high or in a humid area. and sometimes, wearing gloves could potentially ruin those papers....
The gloves are also for your body’s natural oil & sweat
Sweat is more disgusting than bacteria tho
As a library director, I find it difficult to believe that no one knows the full contents of what’s in that library. That’s what librarians do: create lists, finding aids, and databases to document the holdings of a library. Card catalogs are obsolete but there must be digital files. Why say something do preposterous? Having said that, I’d love to spend a day exploring that library. Lots of stolen history there!
Possibly they meant that no one person could know everything. The narration did refer to a handful of different curators, after all.
I think what they were saying is it is impossible for one or even many people working there to know everything that is in there. I'm sure they have old fashioned card catalogs and modern digital files. And to be honest, I don't think the Vatican was all that concerned with writing down a list of everything in there. That probably only came about in the early 1900's and possibly, to a fuller extent, starting around the 1980's.
Is your library 33 miles long and 2,000 years old?
Stolen? You must be American. Of course you'd know about stolen history

[9]But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.
[10]For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.
[11]Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.
[12]Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
[13]Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
